The most important thing you didn't (and can't) show is the scary feeling taking the subway in the US at night, when there're not too many passengers around. When I was studying and living there I made sure I didn't go to an empty wagon, didn't make eye contact if possible, didn't get too close to those homeless....oh, also shouldn't step too close to the edge when waiting for the train (as there're cases people got pushed for whatever reason). It's hard to understand a country so rich and advanced will have something like this.

I have been to NYC several times myself (Canadian here), I can assure you that's real. I didn't go to that station in your video, however, every station I had been to was pretty much the same. I hung out at Time Squar/5th Ave areas most of the time. Oh the stations were like dungeons, scary and filthy. Even inside the trains, graffiti and broken glasses etc. It was truly an experience that you didn't really want to have.
I suppose one could say that China's train systems are newer than NYC. But that still doesn't give them an excuse to be so filthy. Japan has some old train lines but they were nice and clean as well.

I went to New York in 2015. I went into the subway system but the most shocking part was not the visuals. It was the smell. I really wanted to go back to Canada right away.

I used to live in Chicago, and we were told that we were lucky to have a train & bus transportation system that crisscrossed the whole city. Chicago is one of the few cities in America where buying a car is optional, because the whole city is accessible by public transportation. But their buses and their trains are slow as Hell, taking more than 2 hours to arrive at your destination is considered good, even though you could reach there in under 30 minutes if you travel by car.
The trains are so noisy that it is impossible to talk or hear any conversations. And the trains are dangerous, a friend of mine died after falling off the train as it was moving with the door stuck open. Yes, the ambulances showed up, made a flashy scene and all, some passengers even laughed at the whole situation. On another day, I witnessed a passenger who looked like he was sleeping, and a group of gangsters were emptying out his pockets. So I walked up to them, I didn't know if he was really sleeping or they had knocked him out, either way, I tried to do something about it, as the train reached to a stop, as soon as the doors opened, the gangs shoved me out of the train, which happened to be my stop.
And then all that graffiti, the scribbling marks all over the walls and stuff, they actually mean something. Gangs fight among themselves for specific territories. A particular gang grafitti indicates a particular gang, and anyone who tries to remove that grafitti is risking their life. Someone I knew, an immigrant, who owned a grocery store, erased a grafitti on his store wall, and refused to hand over his profits to the neighborhood gang, and even reported the gang to the Police. The Police did nothing, his grocery store was burned to the ground, and he just felt lucky that they didn't kill him.

Jason I think you have got the bull's eye when doing a fair comparision of the two cities. I remembered the last time my wife and I took a train from New York's grand centre station to Connecticut to visit our friend. It took us for ever to reach the place. The train was going slow, noisy and rocking from side to side like a drunken sailor.
We phoned ahead to inform our friend before the journey . On arriving, our friend said, " What take you folks so long ?". I jokingly and politely saying, "We are the strangers in town searching the way."

I lived in NYC for 37 year and Miami 5 years, NY subway station is exactly look like that and it is very dangerous waiting for train. There were many times people got push to train rail and some suicides too, not to mention many robberies. After 47 yr in US, I came back to China 2020 and I am very happy to be home again and staying home. I will never go back.

I was kinda upset with how expensive the London Underground is and it’s not as nice in comparison of my home city’s metro, but damn, the NY subway is like straight out of some horror movie

Guiyang sits on Karst terrain. There are caves and underground rivers beneath the city, which makes it much harder to build a subway system compared to NYC. What they have achieved is amazing.

When I was traveling in the United States, an American friend of mine told me to pay attention to safety because he was robbed twice at the same subway station in New York, not very late, all around 8:30 in the afternoon. That was eight years ago. I also encountered one or two gangsters on the streets of Manhattan, New York, who came up to provocation for no reason. Fortunately, there were police nearby, and they walked away intriguingly. The subway in New York is really dirty. There are rats and urine smell everywhere. I remember I just boarded a car and was stunned. The whole car was full of , it smelled so bad that I had no choice rushed to the other car. The people inside were all staring at me with funny expressions.

The answer to the question from the thumbnail: 'How did this happen?' is quite simple really. The US government is not functional and is not working for its people, while the Chinese government is functional and is working for the Chinese people. And the results of that are there for everyone to see.

Man that was really bad... I lived in Berlin for 16 years and without a doubt, Berlin has the worst underground stations in the whole country... However, even the most rundown Berlin station I saw was nothing compared to this... This is just 100% dystopia... It´s literaly like a station in the 3rd world, literaly. And any station in Berlin, no matter how bad it is, looks like a nice, welcome place compared to that station in New York lol... And trust me i´ve also been in areas like "Bodinstrasse" in Berlin, trust me I have already seen the worst Berlin has to offer... and it´s still a lot better then that NY station.

I used to live in NJ. I took NY subways frequently. Everything you see in this video is all true. Only problem is that you can't smell the odor inside of the station from this video. The subway is a lot of better in DC. However, DC is at least 20 years behind the system is China.

I think most people who haven't been to New York will think you're making this up... but yes it's true, I've seen it and used it. Most visitors to the US would have had this warning, "Avoid using the subway on your own at night!"... YES, it's the gateway to HELL... an entrance with no exit! You may never make it out ALIVE! Thank you for this very fair and unbiased video Jason!

Let’s be honest.
If you took the best station you could find in America, it still wouldn’t hold up against China in regards to Cleanliness, Safety and Reliability.

I've lived in both NYC and China. In NYC, I lived there for 2 stints, in 2007-8 and again in 2011. The subway system there can definitely use some improvement. I don't know how much it's changed. The last time I used the system was Dec 2018 when I went to go visit some friends. In the 7 years from 2011 to 2018, there seemed to be no change or improvement. There seemed to be little to no improvement from 2008 to 2018 either.

I reckon even the worst metro station in China would still look 100x better than the worst metro station in America!

US government would prefer spending most of its money on military. It is not able allocate some little money on its Infrastructure which can improve people's living standards.
In contrast, China government is very willing to spend money on its infrastructures like hi-speed railways, highways, subways/metro systems. They do a lot to improve transport system in the country level. Frankly, our living in China is improving everyday and is not as bad as many people in western countries think.

Yes, the New York subway has been built for nearly 100 years. The first line 1 opened in Beijing is more than 50 years old, but it is maintained as new. The 100-year subway is not a dirty reason.

The US is a third world country as far as infrastructure building. China is far more advanced in this field. Plus, the US government doesn't really care public transportation because the US government is more corporate oriented government who careless about the concerns and benefits of the population or the public.

Over 10 years ago, when I first on a New York train. A local American asked me how do I feel about New York ? I said “very disappointed, before I came here, I expect New York is the first ranking city in the world. But look at the train, they are old, dirty and slow" The American speechless and walked away.

Haha, Jason, it is just so much fun watching your video. You just hit it hard to those misguided and manipulated brains of those haters. Merry Christmas, especially to little Lincoln enjoying his first Christmas.

Nooo way …I've never been to any city in the US but this video is really getting me shocked…although admittedly America is the biggest economy body in the world for decades, its infrastructure is unbelievably terrible

This video compares the ‘face’ of the metro only which is already bad enough for New York, score 10 for China and 1 for New York, dirty, ugly, wet, smelly looks like a toilet that has never been cleaned for a decade. But when you also compare the ‘danger’ lurking at every corner in the New York subway, the score would be 10 for save for travelers in China against 1 for unsafe, horrible, ghostly, nightmare for travelers in New York. So, overall, New York comes number one from the bottom of the score list of 1 to 10.

Love your video. It is real.
I'm American living in China and maried to a local girl. I don't take my wife to America as I am embarrassed when she sees how bad it is there. I am even more embarrassed to say I'm american as people around the world think that all americans have c-19 and intetionally spreading it left and right

You do not have to tell me. I was living in NYC more than 40 years and I know what the MTA subways systrem looks like. Especially those homeless people pissed at those tunnels and it is unbearble in the summer time.

I’ve been to New York just to catch my flight to Toronto, I was regretting to get in the subway train, the visuals were shocking I didn’t expect it was that bad, and the smell was unbearable, I swear that I won’t get into the subway ever again.

As an American I feel like our government is too busy with his step families to take care of its family at home. Lavishly spending on step kids while kids at home go without. Come the holidays (voting season) it comes home and telling everyone all the great things he's accomplished and demands your support.
