Where does the prejudice that Americans are ignorant come from?

The prejudice that Americans are ignorant comes from………Americans or more accurately our leaders.
People from the outside see our antivaxxer, anti-masker, Jewish space laser believing politicians and rightfully believe that they represent the American people.
The American people elected a President who ran on banning Muslims from entering the country (so much for the First Amendment). Claimed Mexico was sending us their murderers and rapists and decided that building a 2000 mile wall would solve the problem. Called climate change and the COVID-19 virus a hoax. Lysol had to issue an emergency announcement not to ingest their products after the President thought the scientists should study it.
Our obsession with guns seems to take priority over the safety of our children.
We stubbornly cling to a healthcare system (or lack thereof) that drains nearly 20% of our economy and drives even insured patients into bankruptcy.
What do you expect them to think?

Geoff Caplan
You forgot to mention the Gallup poll that discovered that 38% of US adults think the world is less than 10,000 years old. The country has a number of universities that teach young-earth creationism as established science, for goodness sake…

Americans essentially are two separate groups. One is well educated, worldly, concerned for others, welcoming to those who are different.
The other group voted for Trump.
How would they see us, given this?

Howard John Goodisson
You do have a huge percentage of your populace that follows that insane dogma, it can be attributed to mass hysteria.
While all countries have people like that, none of them have this mania to the same level or even close to the US, most of us do accept the fact that the majority of Americans are upstanding decent people who are just trying to get on with their lives as best they can, you have proven though to have millions who put their faith into clowns like trump and Greene.
The US needs to address it's issues with utmost urgency and stop trying to press gang other countries into your alleged ideals, what this means is divert the trillions that you spend on militarism around the world and spend it on education, health and infrastructure in your own country.
You are looking at an entire generation before results are seen.

You are right

If the majority are upstanding decient people, why are fringe views so over represented in US politics?
Isn't the US supposed to be a democracy where the will of the majority governs?

Gerrymandering is part of the answer. Another piece as mentioned below by Ken is the electoral college which dues votes in larger states so Presidents can be elected by a minority

Darryl Stevens
The US government simply does not work like a parliamentary system does. The two things that have driven the US to the brink of collapse are the electoral college and gerrymandering. Well, and the senate.
So no, politicians rarely reflect the will of the majority. Speaking of the senate, if I could imagine a scenario for a moment. Let’s say a large land mass appears off of the coast of California in US territorial waters. The seeds of life are already there, we quickly settle and build a large city on the coast. The rest of this new island is mountainous and difficult to live on, with two decently large inland plains which are developed into respectively gaming and ranching regions.

The city incorporate into a state with a population of one million. The agricultural regions become two states. The city is quite liberal and has quickly become a haven for the arts and other liberal priorities. The agricultural areas are extremely conservative and their laws are based on the Old Testament of the Bible.
Now, here is where the peculiarly American magic happens. These three new states send representatives to the house based on their population, cool. However, each state sends 2 senators. So now, the balance of power has shifted dramatically in the senate, adding 4 extremely conservative senators to their caucus, while the liberal caucus added two. Since the senate confirms presidential appointments, this give the conservative wing unmatched power to effect a presidents agenda.
That was, of course an oversimplification, fantasy based outline of Congress, but it’s more or less how representation in the US works.
(It’s long, I haven’t checked for typos). If you made it this far you deserve a prize.

Ken Reibel
The founding fathers were equally concerned that a majority could turn on a minority, and installed guardrails to prevent that from happening. The electoral college for instance gives an outsized voice to smaller states, and a minority of lawmakers can prevent the majority from pushing its agenda. The first amendment primarily protects minority viewpoints by protecting unpopular speech.

Sean Quinn
Yes, but now we’re largely being governed by a minority and all of the guardrails to protect the minority have given them more power than the majority. The power given to small states through the Senate and the Electoral College and their effect on the Supreme Court, and now radical gerrymandering in the House and in State governments, have effectively given control to the minority. We effectively have a tyranny of the minority.
And those of us in the majority and in large states are getting pretty fed up with it.

Rick Kitson
The US constitution can and has been amended several times.
Most of what I am talking about can be accomplished within the constutition.
There is nothing in the constutition that precluded greed fair voting with gerrymandering outlawed.
There is nothing in the constutition that prevents abortion being legalized, universal healthcare from being implemented, gun control, universally high standards of education etc.
But for some reason the fine upstanding and decent American public will not elect politicians who will do so.
Could it be that they are not as fine, upstanding and decent ient as they would have you believe?

And we are seeing those generational results now. America is probably lost already. Dead but just hasn't realized it yet. We had the Baby Boomers. The young can say what they like about boomers but they are going to leave more inherited wealth to their children than ever before in history. And that's adjusted for inflation. Which will potentially in large part left to those complaining about them now. But that's not the killer.
The Boomers had an excellent work ethic instilled by the WW2 generation that trickled a little farther. This created the latch key kid. They were neglected in specific ways. The parents were laser focused on work andaling money to the children's detriment. There was a lack of attention, not love. These latch key kids decided their children would never suffer this. So the children are the most important asset we will ever have. And they are the future, do not doubt that. But that will be the killer.
So these parents absolutely doted on their children. They could do no wrong. They gave them anything their heart desired. Refused to let anyone say anything derisive or correct any actions. After all they were the future and they deserved the best. And they handed it to them. Regardless of anything else, it was honestly done with nothing but love and good intentions. Misguided, but heartfelt. And they taught and indoctrinated this into all of society. Deeply. And it was accepted with an almost religious fervor. The problem I've yet to mention is growing worse.

So the next generation really took this to heart. Now it's got to the point that children are almost untouchable regardless of what happens. Fiercely protected by their parents and society from all repurcussions in life. If they do not do well I school, it's now the teachers fault. If they act out it's societies fault. Trouble with the law, they're being picked on. No matter the circumstances they are beyond reproach. If they fail or lose at something they still get a trophy. Even if they don't try. Essentially everything is handed to them. Behavior or effort be damned. But they have to know that no matter what they are still a winner and society still loves you. But does it.
The only hope I see is if the generation coming gets left alone enough to become tough and resilient. Sorry. I'm done with this for now. Just consider it is all I ask.

“People from the outside see our antivaxxer, anti-masker, Jewish space laser believing politicians and rightfully believe that they represent the American people.”
I think it’s more that 40–50% of American voters support those antivaxxer, anti-masker, Jewish space laser believing politicians. Every country has its contingent of loons, but very few countries vote them into office.

David Greer
I think the number of American voters who support those idiocies is more in the 35% range, but yeah.

One fifth of Americans voted for Trump. Seventy million people. This is the face of America that we see, that’s what scares the rest of the world. We all have a mad relative living in the attic, but we have the sense to keep the door locked, and pretend it’s the rats banging on the floor.

We sent our criminals to Australia and our religious nut jobs to you. Australia got the better deal.

“antivaxxer, anti-masker, Jewish space laser believing politicians”
There’s also the “If you don’t listen to the news, Delta Covid will vanish” politicians.

Yes, it comes from Americans themselves. I met an American college student who insisted that Rome is the capital city of Romania, and a Texan in Ottawa who wanted to know why we painted all our roofs green.

I once owned a pub and was thrilled to receive my first beer from Africa. I told the staff and they were happy as well. When I got it and showed it to one employee and told her it was from Kenya. Her response: “I thought you said it was from Africa”.

But we, here outside in the free world are honestly sympathetic.
Many of us love the USA and find Americans to be extremely friendly and helpful.
We cannot properly understand why so many people in the USA can be so apparently easily brainwashed.

Over the past 2 weeks I’ve read news articles regarding several children being killed or injured from picking up guns being left lying around one of them having been left on the seat of a truck.
WTF is wrong with these morons?

Correction on many of your items. He did not run on banning Muslims, although that is a good sound bite. He insisted the ban on countries known for fostering terrorism, which several Presidents had previously done.
He did say that about rapists and murderers, which was stupid. That being said statistically a very high percentage of illegal immigrants are in prison for violent crimes. Just because it hurts your feelings doesn't mean it's not true.
Guess where else we have walls, anywhere we want to keep people out.
I can tell from your writing that you are probably a hard core climate changer. Meaning we must do anything regardless of the consequences if it may have any effect at all on climate change. That's where most of America and most conservatives. We are all for doing our part, but not at the cost of our livelihoods and economy for negligible results that are far from certain. Trump said many stops things about climate change, but getting us out of the Paris accords was a good thing. The accords did nothing but make people feel like they were doing something.

A long time ago while working with americans we were discussing the russian invasion of Afgahnistan and the possibility to go to war over a contry most of us had hardly heard of or knew were was located, some of the americans said they would go to war anytime for anyone who was denied the right to live “The American Way”!
I didn’t tell them that most of us in Denmark do not want to live that way.

The below quote says it all Claire .

Do they not have atlases or world maps there .

Claire Jordan
It’s more likely imo that she’s just never thought about the literal meaning of “overseas”.
