The best approach is “I will do.”
Always remember you don't need to attend big seminars, listening motivational talks.
When you know this truth - your life is your responsibility, you will do the work despite facing numerous problems.

Use VRS Approach: Verify, Reason and Solution. It is a method invented by me. There are three steps:
Verify/Understand the Problem: I cannot stress this enough, I have seen a lot of people working so hard in problem-solving without verifying the problem. Verifying and confirming the problem is the first step in understanding the problem, I do not trust my client, customer, or in that case even my manager in this, I will verify and understand it from my end.
Find out the Reason/Cause behind the Problem: A lot of people try to jump to the solution part of the problem, which is very wrong, if you keep on doing that, you will only find a temporary solution but if you find the reason and solve that, that problem will be gone from its root, Hence this step is very important.
Solution of the Problem: Now comes the part you’ll have been waiting for, if you’ve completed the above two steps properly this will feel like a breeze. I try to make different hypotheses on what could be the solution and then try to check them one by one.
So, yeah this was my simple and basic but effective approach. You can try this for all your problems in life, professional as well as personal.

Problem-solving results from the ability to generate many answers, mentally testing them to see if there is a possible solution and then implementing it mentally or physically.
Edward de Bono has written several books on this topic. He talks of using ‘PO’ as any word that can start to generate ideas. He recommends taking pairs of words and seeing if there is a connection.
His multi-million bestseller “Lateral Thinking - be more creative and productive” will get you started. It gives you techniques to produce ideas. Have a look at his work “de Bono’s Thinking Course’ for more exercises to develop your skills.

Practice practice practice. This big thing with problem solving is it is knowing the systems. It is thinking critically. This is one of the hardest things to get better at because the concept is so abstract. Ultimately, you get better by trying hard things. Things genuinely hard and frustrating and when you get stuck? Go ask help from people who know what they are doing and ask them to explain their thought process. Do lots of logic and thinking puzzles. Do real life problem solving as well. What hobby do you have? Or what do you like? Go and solve problems for people or read about problems people have and think of some possible solutions and then read up on what others did as well.

Numbered, but just to make a list of it, not in any particular order:
Study. Learn more facts and skills to use as tools to solve problems.
Break the problem into a set of smaller problems. Keep breaking those problems until they get small enough you are able to solve them.
Look for the cause of the problem, then look for the cause of that cause, continue until you have found the root cause. That is the most effective place to fix a problem.
Practice. Like any other skill, practice makes you better and more comfortable doing it.
Try to understand exactly what is happening and why. What other things influence the correct and incorrect things and why do they have an influence?

"What can I do? This is not possible to solve."
When I was interning at BCG many years back, I was once faced with a problem that I found impossible to solve. After spending a few days on the problem, I gave up.
"I do not think this problem can be solved," I told my immediate superior. And guess what?
"Had the problem been easy, wouldn't the client have solved it themselves? Do you think the client has hired us to tell them that we cannot solve the problem?"
I closed my laptop, took out a pen and notebook, and started trying to solve the problem again, but this time with a fresh approach. It did not work fully, but I felt I was a little bit closer to solving the problem. I kept pushing and eventually managed to arrive at an answer.
I learned my lesson - there is no problem that is impossible to solve. It might require resources, it might require expertise, it might require hustle.
But you know what? When not being able to solve a problem is not even an option, every problem can be solved.

The answer depends on the type of problem. Mathematics problems become easier the more you practice. You may need a different book or additional lessons, but the bottom line, one you understand the methods is practice.
Other problems, like human interactions at work, require an experimental approach. There is no one method that will solve all human problems.

Nathan Ketsdever, Passionate about Learning
Here are nine key steps to improving your problem solving dramatically:
1) Practice . Make problem solving an ongoing habit. (also make questioning an ongoing habit).
2) Have a nice Set of Problem Solving Tools (it helps to have a checklist, so that you can know if you've applied a given tool or not)
3) Reflective thinking via journaling
4) Define the problem & figure out what the root cause is (thats really two steps)
5) Learn Design Thinking and apply it.
6) Think about the problem from multi-perspectives (ie multiple academic disciplines). Design thinking is actually another form of perspective taking.
7) Metaphoric/Analogous problem solving is quite helpful. This was how the mouse was created.
8) Make getting better a real goal for you.
9) Talk to people who solve problems effectively how they do it.

Barry Hampe
Take lots of time to become familiar with the problem. Be sure you understand what is being asked and what elements you have available to find a solution. In some cases this may include knowledge of the way the world works outside the stated problem.
Don't even think about getting the right answer, but concentrate on discovering (or developing) a process that will result in an answer to the problem. Once you have that you'll know if your answer is right.
Be on the lookout for tricky language in the problem. And remember that negative information can be just as informative as positive information.

Abe Kurland
An excerpt from my book (Learn from the best, available on amazon):
Just like a test, life too has problems. (In fact, life is filled with many problems.) As I discussed previously, one main difference between winners and losers is the way that they solve problems. Learning how to correctly solve problems is key to becoming a winner.
In general, losers don't actually solve problems. For example, losers use an obstacle as an excuse to give up. The reality is, almost nothing in life goes as planned. No matter how fortunate you are, you're going to have problems in life.
Furthermore, instead of trying to solve problems, losers simply attempt to mask the symptoms of problems with various unhealthy habits: drugs, unhealthy eating, excessive shopping, etc.
The problem is, these unhealthy habits don't actually solve the problem. (They merely cover up the symptoms.) Moreover, after these unhealthy habits stop masking the original problem, not only has it returned, but also there is a new problem: the unhealthy habit itself.
Not only do these unhealthy habits do nothing to solve problems, they end up creating their own problems in addition to the existing problems. You should never use unhealthy choices in order to solve problems in your life.
How you solve these problems is crucial. (Learning how to solve problems correctly is a key part of working smarter.) Now that we know how not to solve problems (by using unhealthy habits), how do winners solve problems?

Winners use three main tools to solve problems: trial and error, making goals, and going through the grieving process. Even though everyone has heard of these concepts before, relatively few people completely understand them. (Moreover, virtually no one uses them as efficiently as possible.)
Practically every problem you encounter in life can be solved using one of these three methods. Whichever method you use is determined by the type of problem.
Trial and error is mainly used for problems for which the problem is unknown, e.g., trying to find the cause of your headache. (The headache is a symptom of a problem; you don't know the actual problem. Trial and error can also be used to solve known problems with unknown solutions.)
The goal making process is a process used for problems where both the problem and the solution are known (problem: being overweight, solution: diet and exercise).
(These solutions are known because of other human's trial and error. For example, humans didn't always know that the solution to being overweight was diet and exercise. However, they found it out eventually through trial and error.)
The grieving process is used to solve known problems with no possible solutions (or unknown solutions), e.g., the death of a parent. (In other words, mostly things which have already occurred and are unchangeable.)
Solving your problems as efficiently as possible will change your life immensely.

Well, the first and the most difficult step is "to start to think". Once, you have started to think its just a cycle of failures and successes.
What I usually do is try to figure out, what actually is creating the problem ? and then try to solve it with resources in hand. Its an iterative approach, and mostly works.
There are various approaches which are optimal for a certain kind of problem, but that will take sometime to master and only comes with practice.
Also, its very important to keep on solving it till you get the solution, this really helps. You might take long time to solve few problems initially, but eventually it will start coming in smoothly and nicely.

One has to start with fundamentals: logic.
Solving a problem requires thinking and reasoning and methodology. It might happen that someone solves a problem by accident but this is not the general case.
First you need a clear definition of the problem. This helps you define the area of knowledge in which you will search for the solution.
Then you recall true statements available for solving problems in that area of knowledge. For example in mathematics you must know axioms, theorems, propositions, lemmas etc.
Then you must know the available proof methods. In order to be sure you solved the problem correctly you must always follow proof methods such as deduction in logic.
These steps might seem easy…but they aren’t. We often get locked in a proof method and then it is hard to see “outside of the box”. This requires abstract thinking. You might also have to combine different areas of knowledge in order to solve a problem. Then you are not sure which methods to choose for solving.
On the plus side you get better with experience! You also get faster and then you go one level up: not just solving a problem but also finding the best solution for it!

According to George Polya in his excellent book "How to Solve It" there are four steps to solving a problem:
1. Understand the problem
2. Make a plan
3. Carry out the plan
4. Check your answer
In my experience a lot of people (myself included) are tempted to jump straight to step 3 and get stuck. The book contains plenty of advice about how to approach each stage of this process, with particular emphasis on finding analogies.

乔治·波利亚(George Polya)在他的优秀著作《如何解决它》(How to Solution It)中说,解决问题有四个步骤:

Solving many problems, it is obvious but more important yet, you must learn to think clearly and with an order.
Finding patterns when you solve a problem. It is achieved through of a deliberate practice.
Read books about logic, not only programming and math books, but also, philosophical logic books, you will become a great thinker.
You seek different problems for resolving, be creative and maintains a consistent effort.

Richard Feynman said he became a great problem solver at school when he used to ask people for any riddles or puzzles they knew so they could try them. He got a reputation and people started asking him to solve their homework assignments, including people from the years above him.
He used to take a half hour or so to solve the puzzles, but then next time someone asked him the same one he would pretend to figure it out on the spot in a few seconds. :-)
Anyway he later became a renowned physicist.

Well it takes imagination and practice. There are problems every day to make decisions on that require some knowledge of the situation. I have only one black shoe in my closet - where is the other one? Deductive reasoning will cause you to back-track your actions until you find it.
If you are referring to math problems realize the various types. First learn your basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. Then learn to identify what they are asking for:
Two trains going in the opposite directions, at different speeds over a certain distance is a a fraction question for percentage.
Join and Separate Problems, Dad bought 8 potatoes, gave 7 apples to Mom for a pie, then bought 18 carrots, gave away 3 how many vegetables does Dad have now?

Problem solving is something we continuously have to deal with our whole lives. One of the best ways to really become good at problem solving is to really think about the problem at hand. Think about all of the assumptions you have of how something should be solved and set them aside. Map out your problem either on a piece of paper using sketches or even use props around you. Once you think of a solution that may work, follow through and repeat if you fail. Try again until you've exhausted your limits. Once you google and find the answer, examine your failures and fallacies in thought. You will struggle, but it's the struggle that makes us better thinkers.

First I think main in problem solving is intuition not logic. By intuition we create by logic we proof. I advice if You decide to solve problems use Your intuition and try to grow it. then You need practise. Make difficult and interesting problems and make different problems to adapt your mind and to be ready for new problems. I think theory, good practise and using intuition is best to became good problem solver. Forums is very good too you study there how other peoples thinks they just follow their intuition and right logic. Art of Problem Solving is great resource for that, for problems also as forum. Right practise anyway is most important i think. Don't use sudoku or something that "train" methods, they don't train your thinking level, that is just dead calculation, not thinking.
