Yes, and even the FBI were amused in the end.
Too good to be true?
Back in 1989, I was looking for a house to rent for my family. It wasn’t going well. Most homes in the price range I could pay were either in poor condition or in a bad neighborhood. I was chasing every lead, so when I saw a sign nailed to a telephone pole that offered “3 bedroom homes for rent - $450,” I called and left a message.
The man who called me back introduced himself as “Jesse,” and he indicated that he had two vacant houses remaining. He gave me the addresses and said to call back if I was interested in either home. The first house was much like the others I had been seeing — marginal condition in a marginal neighborhood. The second house wasn’t at all like I expected. It was — AWESOME! It was in a good neighborhood. Looking through the windows, I actually counted four bedrooms, with a master bedroom that opened onto a deck, and it had a sun room! A FREAKIN’ SUN ROOM!
Convinced he had given me the wrong address, I called back, and when he confirmed the address, I quickly told him I wanted to lease the house. He met me at the house, and he seemed to know almost nothing about it. He even seemed surprised that the house actually had four bedrooms. We signed the lease, and he took my first month’s rent and a deposit check for the same amount.

Bad news!
After a little more than a month of the high life in our new home, a trivial incident happened that was the first indication of trouble. The float in a toilet broke, but it was no big deal. I spent $10 replacing the part, and wanted to arrange to deduct the cost from the next month’s rent. I called and left a message for Jesse that I had something I wanted to talk to him about, but he didn’t call me back. I called back a week later to remind him that I needed to talk to him, but again he didn’t return the call.
It was a Sunday morning, a few weeks later, and I was leisurely lying on the sofa in MY SUN ROOM reading the local paper, when something caught my eye — a report of an emerging scam taking place across the country.

As the story explained, because the economy had quickly slowed, home values had plummeted, and in many areas, homeowners owed much more on their mortgages than their homes were worth. Some homeowners, though, had a type of mortgage called an FHA “non-qualifying assumable” loan. This allowed a homeowner to sell their home to anyone, regardless of the buyer’s qualifications or ability to pay, with the buyer simply taking over the seller’s debt to the FHA. The article indicated that con men were buying large numbers of these houses, immediately renting them out, and collecting rent without making mortgage payments for as long as possible until the homes were foreclosed on.
OMG!OMG!!OMG!!!
The article went on to interview renters who had been told they had to leave the foreclosed houses, and some key things stood out: they had surprisingly low rent on nice homes (so the scammer could start the rent stream ASAP), and once they moved in, they could never get in touch with the landlord, despite multiple calls (!!!!!). Fuuuuudge!
I asked a neighbor what he knew about the buyer and, sure enough, he told me that the previous owner owed over $100K on a house she was told she could sell for about $65K, but that a buyer agreed to take over her mortgage for the full amount.

Last call:
I was PISSED! The last thing I wanted to do was give this scammer another dollar. He had already taken my deposit and two months’ rent. I called the Austin Tenants Council and explained the situation. The friendly lawyer said that I had no proof and that I absolutely, under no circumstances, could stop paying rent.
I remembered that he hadn’t called me back about the $10 toilet float, and that I had never told him why I had called. I decided to give him one last chance, and if he called me back, I would have to keep paying rent. I called him one last time, acting extremely angry and threatening, and waited.
He never called back, and I never sent another check.

Time’s up:
About three months later, we got the first note on our door demanding that we “call the bank about your mortgage.”The same thing happened for the next four months. During the fourth month, we found a notice posted on the door that the house was being foreclosed on, and that we had to vacate it in 60 days.
In the end, we were in the house for just over nine months, for which we paid two months’ rent and lost the deposit. The scammer lost over $2500 just for not returning my call about a $10 toilet part.

Agents at the door, and LOLs:
About three years later, I was in my garage when my wife came in and said, “Mark, two guys from the FBI are here and they want to talk to you.”
The agents introduced themselves and asked if we had lived at the address of the scam rental house. I said, “Yes, for nine months,” and they indicated that Jesse had been arrested crossing the border into Mexico. He had pulled the same scam on over 20 houses, and they were tasked with building the felony case against him for cheating the FHA. They said they would need a copy of my lease agreement and copies of all the rent checks.
“Yeah, about that, I stopped paying after the second month.” They were incredulous, and when I explained that I quit paying because of the toilet piece and everything, they burst out laughing. I gave them the lease agreement and agreed to get copies of the few checks for them.
Jesse later pled guilty and went to the pokey (ironically, the house is now worth $270K more than he paid for it. If he had just paid the mortgage and kept it, instead of making like a bandit, ).
Man, I loved that sun room!

Yes I have. Here is the story.
In Shanghai at night, taxis go rogue. It’s really strange; I haven’t seen this happen in other Chinese cities at such a large scale: all taxis going rogue.
One night we were in Pudong enjoying the night view. We went down the pedestrian bridge, hailed a taxi, and the driver asked where we were going. I told him the address of our hotel, he said 200 yuan. It was ridiculous because that’s how much it cost us from the airport, and our hotel wasn’t near the airport, it was right across the river. We took the metro to the nearest stop and walked our way back.
The next day we were at Nanjing Road, the end closer to People’s Square. It was at night again and we hailed another taxi. Same ordeal. We decided enough was enough. In daytime, it was 20 yuan. We decided we’d pay him 25, perhaps there was a night-time price hike.
We got in, he arrived at our hotel, and we paid him 25. He got really angry, told the hotel doorman that we were trying to cheat him. I told the doorman he was trying to get more money out of us and that he was asking for 100 yuan from Nanjing road.
The doorman told the cabbie to beat it and apologized for the issue.

Sure have.
This one was the call from a phony Msoft engineer about a virus on my computer.
He directed me to press certain keys.

System Locked:
I responded that the virus had frozen my computer - no response to key presses or mouse movements. I was totally sincere in my tone of voice, pretending as if the condition I was describing was really true.
For the next 5 minutes, he tried telling me various ways to restart the computer.
I replied that no matter what I tried, the system stayed powered up, but was frozen.
He told me finally to pull out the power cord.
I said that I did, but the system was still powered up.
“How can that be?” he asked.
“Running on the battery, I guess,” was my reply.
He believed me, and “escalated” the call. The above conversation was repeated, until they finally just hung up.
I called back, saying we had been cut off. I repeated my problem about powered but frozen, and led the new ”technician” down the same garden path as the first one. They terminated the call, and I called back.

For the next new tech, I repeated as above.
In the space of an hour, I had gone through about 5 technicians.
They Roll Out the Big Gun:
At last, I was transferred to the “manager,” who warned me about playing games with them.
“I’m not playing games!” I said. “You guys know I’m not because you called ME, right? You know there is something wrong, here. I’m telling you this system is locked up and I need help.”

The Sell:
They switched tactics, now offering to sell me a service plan: One time fix, annual contract, or lifetime contract. All priced accordingly.
I opted for the one time fix.
And he began the upsell process, which went on for 15 minutes. At last I chose the life time plan ($1,500).
By now, about 90 minutes have elapsed since first contact.
But How to Pay?
Having chosen the expensive plan, the manager now asked for credit card information.
I said I didn’t use credit cards, but that I could send a check.
He suggested a wire transfer and asked for my routing information.
I said I hoped he understood that I never told people that information, and suggested we use PayPal instead. “You do take PayPal, don’t you?” I asked.
He said not.

My Microsoft Premium Support Plan:
And that’s when I said I had a paid premium support plan with Microsoft, and asked why that plan wouldn’t cover the fix.
In a lengthy explanation, he said the plan didn’t cover virus problems.
Now 2 hours had passed.
It Works!
I could tell the manager was frustrated, running out of options. But owing to my utter sincerity, he was hanging in with me.
Then I interrupted: “Hey! You did it! It’s working! This is fantastic! How did you do it?!”
Manager: But I didn’t do anything!
Me: Well, you obviously did something. The system is running faster than ever. This is great!
Manager (angry): No, we did nothing! This is just part of the virus behavior, your system will crash and nothing will fix it.
Me: Wait, wait! (I make key tapping noises). Really, it will crash? So why is it running so well?

Manager: That’s how the virus works. It is giving you a false sense of security while it is deleting files and corrupting your data…
Me: Hold on! I just finished running a virus scan. The system is clean. No issues found. This is fantastic! Thank you!
Manager: But I guarantee it will fail. This is just temporary.
Me: Hold on. (more clicking noises). But how can you be so sure ?
Manager: We just know from experience.
Me: I just powered down and started up again. Everything is perfect! OK, look, I want to pay you for this. Where can I send a check, what is your address?
Manager: We can’t accept payment like that.
I commend this approach to anyone else who receives the same scam attempt.

I once encountered a scam via a phone call and I, kind of wasted a lot of money and energy of the scammer.
On a lazy sunday morning, I got a call from +91 70789 51593, a female voice was talking. I was informed that I have won a free Samsung J2 Mobile Phone and an Adidas kit containing goggles, jeans, shoes and what not. The market value of the combo was 30k but I need to pay winning charges 6.5k for handling.
The deal was kind of appealing but I had a smell of scam due to the winning charges. I used a little wit and accpeted the offer. Meanwhile I went on google and checked for adidas scam. Everyting was confirmed. I was being fooled.
She informed that I did not have to pay anything now but I have to pay cash on delivery. Anyone will fall for this kind of offer. Something worth 30k at the price of 6.5k that too at COD. But the actual thing was, I had to go to local post office to collect the shipment and pre-pay before opening it. (India Post holds no guarranty on the product in the shipment. They just take the money.)

She took approx 15 minuites in taking the order. She asked sizes and colour of each product. Even the Adidas belt’s size and colour was asked. She was very detailed on every product to make me sure of buying it. She even suggested that the white colour wont be a very good option.
She then took my address. I gave my address in complete details and landline/ mobile number was provided. She informed me that I have to go to the IndiaPost office and collect the shipment. Their (both IndiaPost and Adidas) team will inform me when the parcel has arrived and I have to go with 6.5k in hand. I said okay.
Later I got a confirmation of my order. :D
Just to con the scammers, I acted like I'm intrested
Scammers also sent order confirmations now. You are properly ready to be fooled.

Same evening, I got a verification call from +91 90581 12808 m. They confirmed if I was informed as they asked and not offered anything else. They made sure I accept to go to the local post office and pay money to receive the parcel. I enjoyed talking to them as I answered very interestingly and it made them happy.
Now a week later, I got call from local post office that a parcel has arrived on my name. I informed them I am not coming and this is a scam parcel. They can send it back. I thought this must be over but not yet. Next morning I got a call from the Adidas customer suppourt team from +91 90849 97459 and a guy named Krishna informed me that my parcel has arrived and I have to pay 13k to get it.
I thought to roast him a little and told him I will go that evening. He insisted that I must go on the same day. He also told me to go by car as the parcel was huge.
I called him later that evening and told him that IndiaPost's lazy employees have returned the parcel without my permission. I went there with money but the parcel was returned already. I almost fake cried that I lost such a great offer. He told, he will confirm by checking in his system. He affirmed that the parcel was returned. I requested to send back the parcel. :D

Yes, he said. He can return the same when they get it. But I have to pay INR 500/- extra for the courier and handling charges. I denied. I said I don't want to pay extra and he could talk to his seniors as it was not my fault. He agreed :D
Now, next week, I got a call from Nodia Post office. The guy talked in fake tone of a UP guy. I understood he is a conman too. The said post office guy informed me that there was a big parcel in my name. The parcel weighed 10kgs or something and they are scanning it on a x-ray scanner for security reasons. He told me he could see some mobile phones and key ring etc in the parcel. I confirmed that I had won this one and its all okay.
Now the parcel reached to local post office again. Krishna called me again. He informed me I can get my parcel and pay the money to IndiaPost. I told him I will go tomorrow. He agreed.
Now, he called me like every hour from next day. I didn't take any. He called from other numbers. I heard him and hanged up. He called me for 5–6 days and then he got tired of it.
These folks think the people are fools. Dude, I wasted your 2–3k bucks and numerous calls. :D
I felt like a boss.
