(Prices of basic essentials, from food to fuel, are soaring.)

Claimants of unemployment benefits will see the biggest fall in the value of their payments in 50 years on Monday, anti-poverty campaigners have said, as Britons grapple with the worst cost of living crisis since 1972.

Despite everyday prices rising as much as 8%, and gas and electricity bills almost doubling to £2,000 a year, the state pension and most other state benefits will rise by 3.1% on Monday.

Charities, Labour and others have called on the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to do more to help those on middle and low incomes get through the crisis.

So far ministers have resisted calls to restore the £20-a-week uplift to universal credit that was introduced during the pandemic but then removed just as prices started rising dramatically last autumn.

The money-saving expert Martin Lewis said on Sunday that the UK could experience “civil unrest” later this year if the government fails to take decisive action.

Ministers announced in November that the state pension, universal credit and a host of other benefits would rise by 3.1%. The figure was calculated according to the consumer price index (CPI) for the year up to September 2021.

The increase means that the basic state pension will rise by £4.25 to £141.85 per week, while the full new state pension will rise by £5.55 to £185.15.

A single person aged 25 will see their universal credit allowance rise from £324.84 to £334.91 per month, totalling £4,019 a year. Child benefit rises 68p per week for the eldest child.

However, since September the price of most essentials has rocketed. According to the latest UK economic outlook report from PwC, British households are set to be £900 worse off this year in a “historic fall” in living standards. It found that inflation will hit 8.4% later this year.

Helen Barnard, the associate director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, an anti-poverty group, told Sky News that benefits claimants had seen the value of payments fall in real terms in eight out of the last 10 years. “It means that in terms of their values, how much bread and milk you can buy in the shops, it is the biggest fall in value since 1972.”

She added: “We know the majority of people in poverty now are in working households. One of the problems is that too many jobs are not just low paid, but they’re insecure – you don’t know what money you’re getting one week to the next, you don’t get sick pay; you don’t get protection if something goes wrong. People are struggling to afford the basic essentials and having to rely on charities for toothpaste and toilet rolls. It’s humiliating for a lot of people.”

Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow work and pensions secretary, said Sunak had imposed the deepest real-terms cut to the state pension in 50 years and a second deep cut to universal credit in six months.

“These severe real term cuts are a direct consequence of his point-blank refusal to take into account current price rises in setting rates,” he said. “His decision will help push an extra 1.3 million people including 500,000 children into absolute poverty. It’s now clearer than ever that the working people, disabled people and pensioners are worse off under the Tories.”

A government spokesperson said: “We recognise the pressures people are facing with the cost of living, which is why we’re providing support worth £22bn across the next financial year and, as was approved by parliament, benefits are being uprated by the usual measure, September’s inflation figure.

“Our package of support includes putting an average of £1,000 more per year into the pockets of working families via changes to universal credit, cutting fuel duty and helping households with their energy bills. We have also boosted the minimum wage by more than £1,000 a year for full-time workers and are raising national insurance thresholds so people keep more of what they earn.”

Had the bbc news on this morning and was surprised how hard they were going in on the government. Laying this economic crisis clearly at the feet of the tories.

Lots of people don't pay attention to politics until it affects them. Suddenly pensioners and the middle class has noticed a large shift in their living conditions. When your energy bill doubles and the government tells you to fuck off and not be poor, people take notice. Especially when pensioners and the middle class suddenly realise the party they voted for is only structured to benefit donors to the tory party.
It's a tough pill to swallow realising the ruling party of the UK is corrupt.

KittyGrewAMoustache
I can’t believe it’s taken people this long to realise it. The word Tory literally comes from an Irish word meaning thief. It’s in their fucking name and they’re proud of it!

I moved to Scotland a few years ago. They still remember the damage thatcher did to the country. The tories are setting themselves up for another generation of mistrust.

And yet the number of people on benefits will only go up, as those in work claim them to prop up wages which haven't risen and don't cover costs. Meanwhile the government will continue the "benefits users are scroungers" and "it's all to encourage work instead" narratives.

can we just rename this sub to anti-tory or something and start the UK one all over again?

IamEclipse
This sub is getting very bleak but honestly I think it's a good thing that these things are continually being brought to light.
Quality of life has vastly decreased under the current Tory rule. Benefits have been constantly cut, wages have remained stagnant, services like the NHS have been gutted of funding, and our government is openly corrupt in front of all of us.
It's all doom and gloom but better to be aware of it rather than pretend everything is sunshine and rainbows.

I think the sub just reflects the country honestly.
What positives are there going around? No one seems particularly happy. We could wank ourselves off about how much we love marmite and tea, or reminisce about the good times from the Olympics 10 years ago.

Mister_Sith
I wouldn't say it reflected the country... the demographic of the sub leans very left, far more left than the average Joe blogs. Anyone who's got any positives don't seem to post in this sub very often, and if they do they get grief for doing OK.
The sub has become a breeding ground for complaining... most of it justified but it ends up being hostile to anyone who's not in dire straits and as such their perspective on things isn't welcome.

Elegant-Row-2396
I would say it perfectly represents most of the country, vast majority of people are slowly having there lifestyles eroded, even people doing well are slowly being dragged in now.
Me and my partner have scrimped and scraped to pay off debt and put ourselves in a good position to have a good life nice holidays etc. this month we should have been 600 a month better off, instead she’s been made redundant and has to commute 40miles a day to earn the same wage, 200 quid a month gone, our electric has gone up massively probably 80 quid plus and then on top food and everything else is far more expensive.
If this sub is bleak it’s because it’s how a LOT of people feel right now, wages aren’t going up and cost of living is spiralling, people are slowly watching there disposable income dissolve in front of there eyes

hamsterwaffle
I feel like theres always going to be more anger directed towards the ruling party than the opposition, because theyre the ones supporting to be fixing things.

joshgeake
I can't help thinking that today's problems (not to mention those of previous eras) only underline how powerless governments tend to be. That and the fact that wholesale change is often unpopular...and unpopularity doesn't sit well with a democratically elected government.
At some point a politician will probably tell it how it is - "I lie to you and underdeliver because if I tell you the truth then you won't vote for me and I'll be out of a job."
Maybe that's why so many MPs are former solicitors?

BonzoTheBossCheshire
I can't help but wonder if you'd extend the same latitude to central government if Labour were in power. What you say has a ring of truth, yes governments are as affected by global events as the rest of us. But there is a lot that can be done internally to help alleviate the current struggles that people are facing. They are simply choosing not to.

look-lively
I’m not anti Tory I just hate what they stand for

Does it fuck. What a short sighted comment.
I'm employed, and you know what? I post on reddit when I'm not at work.
Should be fucking working, get to fuck. Ever hear of shift work? Not everyone has a nice cushy 9 to 5 you know. You're just projecting your prejudices and coming up with an answer that suits your views. A substantial portion of the working population don't work those hours, but in your mind if they aren't at work on a Monday they must be scrounging.
Fucking deluded.

qnmd。

And when they don't, will you accept that kicking the foreigners out was, in fact, purely a racial thing and nothing at all to do with economics?

Economy is sure to tank due to labour shortages. Businesses keep shutting down, contracting or moving their operations to EU.
Also EU expats were more skilled than Brits so stop with repeating lies you were fed..
It's amazing how different is narrative in Poland now that over two million Ukrainians arrived. Vast majority of Poles are thrilled about the additional labour. There's plenty of jobs to go around and let businesses expand. The whole anti immigration sentiment was a culture war waged by Tories to cling on to power and they won. Regular people lost.

Living on Benefits should not be a lifestyle option. Instead people should work for the payment.
People on a state pension excepted from the above however their payments should be related to the value they've put into the country over the years.
Too many people think the world owes them a nice lifestyle. It doesn't. Get out and do something valuable.
Edit: and for clarity I worked as a Benefits assessor for 11 years and saw the bone idle getting full benefits whilst Mrs Old Lady living on her own had to pay her own way.

Muted-Beginning848
If someone is incapable of working then they should receive support, absolutely.

callsignhotdog
But then how do you tell who's "really" incapable of working? This is the system we have now, benefits don't pay enough to live, disabled people theoretically get more but they're being constantly challenged on the "validity" of their claims. People with no legs being forced to do assessments every 6 months in case their legs grew back. Every measure to weed out "the undeserving" will inevitably harm "the deserving" and tbh as a taxpayer I'd rather pay for ten scroungers to get less than minimum wage than see even one vulnerable person sanctioned because they missed a letter from the dwp.

I hope you never have a change of circumstances that leaves you unable to work for a few months or more.
Exceedingly few people on benefits live that lifestyle by choice.

I have a family member like that. The problem is she’s absolutely emotionally unstable and highly confrontational. It’s better to keep her out of the workplace because she just causes havoc and chaos. At least on benefits she can just sit at home and shout at daytime tv.
She has a miserable life in general. If it weren’t for the rest of the family paying for broken white goods and unfair bills that crop up, she’d be in eternal debt, paying loan companies huge interest hikes.
Being on benefits is a miserable lifestyle choice. People should be helped off them, but if the alternative isn’t anything more happy or rewarding then how are you to be incentivised?
She was heavily abused as a kid, has major trust issues and seeking what little therapy she could access just ended up making her worse.

Why not? Why should our right to live be determined by how useful we are to business owners?
There are people looking after their elderly parents, sick relatives or their children, people with undiagnosed mental struggles, people burned out from work. They all deserve food and shelter.
Hell, we don't deny food or shelter to worst criminals because that would constitute 'cruel and unusual punishment' but its somehow OK for innocent struggling people?
