If you don’t like Japan because of politics or what Japan did in the past, you should not live in Japan.
In my personal experience, I’ve found out that some of my foreign friends, especially from particular countries, tend to hate Japan for those reasons. However, it contradicts what they are doing here, studying or working. So I am sometimes tired of listening to their complaints about Japan. Or about how powerful and beautiful their countries are compared to Japan. Especially when the complaint comes from the one who received the MEXT scholarship.
In my opinion, if you really hate Japan for whatever reasons, just do not put Japan as your first choice to live. I am a foreigner, and listening to them complains a lot about Japan because of those reasons got me annoyed. But, once again, I am a foreigner here. Imagine what Japanese people would react if they heard about it? If I were Japanese, I’d say, “Leave my country, find another place to live.”

If you were born and raised in a more wealthy country than Japan, and you want to earn money and send them to your family in your country, you should not live in Japan.
It’s not a secret that the Japanese salary is one of the lowest compared to other developed countries.
I have a friend from a Scandinavian country, and he once told me that he could not help his family much with his salary in Japan. This is because the big amount in Japan equals a not so much in his country. I don’t know whether he was telling the truth, but if you guys feel so, just do not put Japan as your first place to work and live.

If you want to have a long holiday every year, you should not live in Japan.
Compared to most of the European countries, Japan has less paid holiday.
People in Japan only have 10 days maximum (on average) of the paid holiday; however, they rarely use those 10 days in a row every year. They can only use it for a special occasion like a wedding or honeymoon. Most people in Japan use paid holidays for their immediate needs, such as going to the parents' day, medical check-up, or when something happens to the children (for a day or half-day leaving).
However, you can have about 7 days of holiday in a row during the end year. If you really want to have a long vacation, especially for a wedding or honeymoon, then you can combine it with a paid holiday. So you will have about 17 days of holiday.
But still, you cannot have a whole month of vacation. Especially during this pandemic, if you want to go on vacation, you will only waste 14 days for the quarantine.

If you are a very religious person and are concerned about the meals and how you want to have the exact time to pray, you should not live in Japan.
This often happens to most in a Muslim community. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Muslim. I do pray (shalah) and fast etc. But here is the thing, I often found some Muslims complaining about their difficulties finding halal restaurants, halal food, or time to pray. And sometimes, they yelled at the restaurant staff because they serve pork. Or complain to the company because the company didn’t give them a place to pray (newcomers often do that).
In my experience, some Muslim parents insisted not to consume milk from Japan and had to ship processed milk from their country. This is because they were very concerned about how Japanese farmers feed the cow.
In my opinion, it’s not Japan that should adapt our Muslim habits. We, as foreigners, should adapt on how living in Japan instead. For example, if you can’t find any restaurant serving only halal food, you simply go home and cook meals yourself. Or, if you are on vacation and can’t find a halal restaurant, you can always go to convenience stores and buy tuna mayo onigiri. You don’t need to complain about that.
So, if you are really concerned about halal food and how you pray, just do not put Japan on the list of countries you want to live in.

6. You have never experienced such Japanese hospitality and kindness and you never realised people can actually be quite nice and civil to each other. Outpourings of kindness can be hard on the senses if you are used to incivility, rudeness and bullying back home.
7. As you don't have a gun to defend yourself, you feel totally defenseless as ownership of guns is banned here and there is no 2nd amendment to fall back on. You never know when someone might try to attack you in a school, church or movie theater or in the supermarket and you have no way to defend yourself against the bad guys.
8. if you are American the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. Many Americans get in on the left and realise someone has stolen the steering wheel.
9. japan has national health insurance and is paid for out of taxpayer money. Discover that medical care is both available and affordable at the same time.
10. It may be a shock to discover you can live in a major city and not need to own a car.

I lived in Japan for a year or so, and I have mixed feelings. I would say there are cons and pros in every place you will visit. I was not in a city area I was in the suburb of Kochi city.
A small descxtion of the place before I point out what is bad. My place was Manobe (20+km from Kochi city), which was a nice beautiful place for nature lovers. It has a beautiful tiny river along my home and the vast pacific ocean just 20 min walk from my place.
The cons of living in Japan (at least what I witnessed)
Japanese people are too cold. They dont try to interact with you unless you take the first lead. When I tried to understand that, I was told they were shy and they dont like that. SO it was really hard to go socializing.
Communication is one of the biggest drawback for foreigners people. Also, in local places you would hardly find someone who can speak English and basically every text is written in Katakana or Kanji. Luckily if u have google translate app, it partially helps.
我在日本生活了一年左右，心情很复杂。我想说，你要去的每一个地方都有利弊。我不是住在市区，我是住在高知市的郊区。

Transport: Although everyone in the world would agree Japan had good transport system. Unfortunately, the suburbs are not good to travel. The closest train stop was 4 km from the university campus.Almost everything is far in Japan when u stay in suburbs. People who stay in the cities are the lucky ones.
Vegetarian Food. Basically almost 70–80% of Japanese rely of sea food or meat. SO finding a vegetarian meal can be hard in Japan, but not impossible.
Karoshi, a word which is used to define Japanese work culture (maybe only heard of this in Japan). This literally means ‘death by overwork’. A survey in 2016, showed more than 20% of 10000 workers worked on average 80 hrs overtime.
This was basically for me a big con. I was thought or told not to make noise while eating. In Japan it very common and not offensive when u sip with loud noise. The noise comes from the "sucking" motion of the noodle from the bowl to the mouth. When asked to my Japanese friend about this, he said if you don't make noise in a Ramen place, that means you don't respect the Ramen chef.
Now let me tell you the good things there are many, but as a nature lover I describe what I liked.
Japan is one of the most well behaved country in terms of following rule. They really respect nature, they keep their home and surroundings clean. You would never see a garbage, piece of paper, or even cigarette buts anywhere. They have the tendency to take everything home and dispose properly. Something they learn from young days. If everyone in the world followed this our earth would be a beautiful place.

You have the choice between a tiny and cheap apartment, a cheap, large but old one, or a large, new but expensive one. Living downtown in any cities take a price, and Tokyo is basically three times as expensive as any other city.
The noise : lixed to the first point, if you want an affordable place, you will have thin walls. You will hear cars outside, children crying, stray cats meowing, and couples fighting on a regular basis. Including in the middle of the night.
Obsession with food : if food is not something that important to you, be ready to be unpopular. When Japanese people go visit some place, they absolutely want to eat some local specialty or eat in a good restaurant. If you are not interested in that kind of tourism and want to spend more time looking around, it’s better to go alone.
You may disappoint : some Japanese people (quite a lot) still see people of different nationalities as a collection of cliches. Some people I met were very disappointed in me for being French but not knowing how to cook, not drinking wine, not knowing Paris or not caring for fashion.

Japanese culture : it is well known that Japanese culture is… complicated. Some aspects, like politeness, appear very good to foreigners. Others, like long working hours, appear terrible. But some ways of thinking are just difficult to even understand. One example I can think of is the concept of “kansha” : “thankfulness”. It means you should be thankful for things in life, which is good. Except when it’s taken to the extreme. Like, some people at work bullied you for years, which caused you illness and depression and forced you to quit your job, but something good happened afterward, so you should be thankful for these people and their harassment. Even after all these years, I just don’t get it.
Racism : I don’t think like some people that Japan is a very racist country. I think most people are not against foreigners, but are also not actively trying to befriend them, and will just treat them as fellow human beings if interacting with them. But racism does exist, and though it’s mostly against people of Asian origins, it also affects white people. If you are white, don’t think you will be 100% safe on this point. You won’t be treated like a god, or a superior being. Being a victim of racism sucks, but it is part of life abroad. So, if you can’t live with that, I would advise not to go live in Japan.

As a conclusion, I want to say that these are the biggest problems I had in Japan, and still I’ve been here for close to 10 years, and don’t plan on leaving. All these are just minor inconveniences compared to all the good experiences I had.

If you are alright with the list above, then your only difficulties will be the language, the new habits, and the loneliness at first (just like in any other country). But Japan is one of the most beautiful, friendliest and fun places to live in. It’s up to you to choose to enjoy it or not.

Working life is ridden with issues: chronic overtime, bullying, classism and sexism. If you are a woman born in an uncool place working on contract for an inexperienced manager, better think of a different place to live.
Sexism. Can’t stress it enough. It is a world of middle-aged men. It is easier for guys, much harder for women, especially for those used to living in an emancipated society. The crime towards women is higher too.
Chauvinism. The understanding of foreigners and anything outside of Japan is limited, yet many are opinionated, way too often in a way where they see themselves as superior just by being born Japanese. Pronounced in the attitude towards other Asians, less so towards Europeans.
Politics. Nominally Japan is a democratic country, but in reality it is not the kind of democracy you might expect to see. Press freedom is limited, power of different fractions barely exists, deep-rooted elitism, populism as the modus operandi of communication.
For the taxes you pay, the social safety net is questionable. 70% of medicine is covered by the taxes, yet still might be too expensive to use it often, pensions are low and projected to be even lower, very few opportunities for people with special needs and the unemployed.
Cities are not nice. Everything is more or less clean and the transport infrastructure is superb, but that is where it ends. Housing is ugly and of poor quality, most urban streets have no pedestrian/vehicle zones, most cities are strictly utilitarian, with lots of exposed steel and concrete.
工作生活充斥着各种问题:长期加班、欺凌、阶级歧视和性别歧视。如果你是一个女人，出生在一个土里土气的国家，为一个没有经验的经理工作，最好考虑另一个地方。

If you find the working hours to be too long and tiring, sometimes to the extent of affecting ones health adversely. Also there's power harassment despite being illegal.
If you want to avoid conformity & forced obligations and follow individualism & personal freedom without fear of repercussions can be difficult.
If you find it difficult to understand the atmosphere or read minds of people or understand rules that aren't written. (Some people simply can't even if they want to; it's cognitive issues. This also comes to the point that Japan isn't suitable for people having mental/cognitive problems. )
If you experience discrimination based on your nationality or race/ethnicity or default physical appearance or similar things that you can't change and receive no support from others when such things occur. stereotypes are common. It's more apparent for people working in the service industry and factories.
If you're a student, you can face harsh bullying and in most cases the teachers won't help while in some cases the teacher himself/herself would do it. There would be no student to support the victim for the fear of getting targeted. (Teacher bullies are a special case and I know someone who's facing it.) Bullying levels differ from region to region, school to school, class to class (and isn't the same everywhere as some apologists claim), and generally fareastern Asia has it on the harsher side.
If you want to avoid unnecessary expenditure. Common people don't use Cabs as they are expensive; most people use public transport which are very crowded. You've to pay all sorts of taxes and insurance to the government. Also there's an NHK fee collector knocking at your doors, sometimes using threats. Prices of commodities are very high. Even mobile subscxtions, contracts and internet fees are expensive, which one has to pay every month.

If you find it difficult to understand the atmosphere or read minds of people or understand rules that aren't written. (Some people simply can't even if they want to; it's cognitive issues. This also comes to the point that Japan isn't suitable for people having mental/cognitive problems. )
If you experience discrimination based on your nationality or race/ethnicity or default physical appearance or similar things that you can't change and receive no support from others when such things occur. stereotypes are common. It's more apparent for people working in the service industry and factories.
If you're a student, you can face harsh bullying and in most cases the teachers won't help while in some cases the teacher himself/herself would do it. There would be no student to support the victim for the fear of getting targeted. (Teacher bullies are a special case and I know someone who's facing it.) Bullying levels differ from region to region, school to school, class to class (and isn't the same everywhere as some apologists claim), and generally fareastern Asia has it on the harsher side.
If you want to avoid unnecessary expenditure. Common people don't use Cabs as they are expensive; most people use public transport which are very crowded. You've to pay all sorts of taxes and insurance to the government. Also there's an NHK fee collector knocking at your doors, sometimes using threats. Prices of commodities are very high. Even mobile subscxtions, contracts and internet fees are expensive, which one has to pay every month.
