Yes and many of them also think all southeast asians look Chinese. If you don't look like one they might ask you '’If you are Asian,why you don't look Chinese?’’ or something like this '’If you're Asian,why you don't have Chinese eyes?’’. That's what me and my friends always get from those westerners. If your look oriental enough then they won't ask you those questions,they will automatically know you're from asia but if you don't look oriental enough they might have harder time guessing where you from.

Met a guy while I was traveling from Milwaukee to Chicago. (same Amtrak - Hiawatha express)

Had a very weird incident at the bars the other night semi related. I was the only white guy in a group that otherwise had mixed asians in it. Were at a light when one of our guys says “sure are a lot of asians out here”.
The latino girlfriend of a chinese guy in the other group got offended for some reason and started screaming at us and trying to get her boys to fight us. I think she thought they were being asian hate crimed.
So theres like a large group of asian guys about to fight another group of asian guys because the latino chick was drunk and confused thinking we didnt like asians when me and her were the only non asians there. ���

Not sure what Westerners are you referring to. Virtually all people on this planet would consider SE Asians as Asians since they look very similar to the Asiatic (Chinese) Asians. The problem that most Westerners have is when you try to classify Indians, Pakistani, Mynamar, Sri Lanka as Asians.

I can’t speak for all Westerners, but at least I can try to speak for Americans…..
If the Southeast Asian person looks Chinese enough I suppose they will be considered Asian by many Americans. But if they don’t look Chinese many Americans might not be able to guess where in the world they are from, and might not assume Asia. Even if they knew what country they were from, they might not know that that country is in Asia. Americans, to generalize, are not great at world geography.
Regarding how many Americans view South Asians to give another perspective, they don’t consider Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, or Sri Lankans to be Asian because they don’t look Chinese, and maybe even because they don’t know that these countries are in Asia……they’re all in the “Indian” category.

If the Southeast Asian person looks Chinese enough I suppose they will be considered Asian by many Americans. But if they don’t look Chinese many Americans might not be able to guess where in the world they are from, and might not assume Asia. Even if they knew what country they were from, they might not know that that country is in Asia. Americans, to generalize, are not great at world geography.
