I don't think a lot of Brits who back/backed Brexit ever properly developed this kind of meaningful emotional connection with what free movement actually truly meant. They weren't giving up something that mattered to them since they never actually really took the effort to enjoy how great free movement was, so the choice seemed worth it.
I've been living in the EU for a wee while now, and what could have been something semi-permanent or phased is now going to be temporary and probably a one-off. I won't be able to actually embed myself in the part or Europe I want to be in without utterly giving up my life back home - it's just too difficult now.
Brexit is a pretty common thing that get's brought up if you are from the UK and talk with people in the EU. It's so demoralising having to address, because you actually feel like an alien and people truly just don't get it.

For the vast majority of Brits free movement meant nothing. They've always lived here. They will always live here. They lost nothing in terms of freedom of movement.
Remainers continue to struggle with that aspect, mostly I think because remainers see being European as part of their identity whereas most people probably think of themselves variously as British, English, Scottish, welsh, or ni first, maybe European 3rd if at all.
For those determined to go and live or work abroad, it now requires paperwork and permission, just like it does for the rest of the world, but it's not a real impediment.
For older people like me it's more of a problem, because at 50 it's harder to meet the immigration requirements of many countries. It's certainly possible still, just harder now.

I am one of the fortunate brits with an Irish parent, so I switched to only using my Irish passport after Brexit came in to effect.
But I am undeiably British, I speak with an accent that marks me out clearly, I have a lot of habits and customs that are British, and I was shaped by the cultural and geographical space of growing up in the UK.
I've moved across Europe multiple times now, France, Switzerland (which is a little more complex than the others), Austria, and the Netherlands, with brief stays in Poland. I have loved being able to take advantage of the ability to relocate for work, love, and because it seemed interesting. It's such a pleasure and privilege, but one that I feel has always been more open to people than prescribed, but Brits as a wider group do not consider themselves internationally mobile for reasons outside of vacations and retirements.

Whenever anyone abroad asks my opinion on brexit i tell them its the most ridiculous thing my country has done in my lifetime, and theres a lot.
I hate the fact we left the EU, but i tend to portray that our country is blinded by bigots and manipulated by those in power. Its a huge issue currently ongoing around the world.
US, America, Australia, Canada were all being manipulated and its so easy to see. Social media has been the single driving force for this and its the reason i hate it. Its made the world as a whole a much worse place and will continue to do so until people can open their eyes and see. We are being driven by fear, and fear is a very powerful tool.

British people on holiday are incredibly embarrassing lol I was in a hotel in Spain and there were a few Brits who wouldn't stop complaining about not being able to get British food, British papers, British TV etc. One woman even complained the hotel had too many Spanish people in it. one dude had a unx jack tattooed on the back of his big fat bald head .
Obviously not all Brits are like this on holiday, but you always get these types of people on every Spanish holiday I've been on.

I am now resident in Portugal (since 2020) and the UK looks like a shit show from here - I hardly ever think about going back to the UK, even temporarily. I will go for permanent residency in 2025 and if I can get a handle on the language I'll try for citizenship at some point. Brexit was a factor in moving here originally so I knew what we were getting into.
I'm not embarrassed to be be British and in fact it rarely crosses my mind, it's not something we talk or think about. The same thing seems to apply to most UK immigrants I have met. We have moved here and moved on. We "feel" European - I know we always were but now a lot of us feel it in our bones. The thing that pisses me off (and others) is that we have less rights than our German, Belgium, Swedish and, of course, Portuguese friends. They can move to Spain to work and live if they want (a couple we knew just up'd and went to live in Austria for a while), they can come and go with ease on their EU passports, they can vote and they are not concerned about pensions, children, driving licenses, work and a host of their small but annoying things. While practically I can go wander round the EU for as long as I want, legally I can't. As soon as I can get citizenship the better.

I definitely agree with the feeling of no longer belonging to the general European community in the same way as before.
However the people interviewed are the lucky ones who managed to get out before Brexit came into effect. While they can’t move within the EU currently or retire in another EU country, after 5 years they’ll generally be eligible for their host country’s passport, which will grant that free movement back again.

It's not that simple, is it? The 5 years thing is for permanent residency in most countries. Applying for the country's passport is another kettle of fish, often requiring passing tests and things. And you have to give up your British passport if you do so (I'm not entirely certain on this point, some people say you do, some that you don't)
I have a Spanish permanent resident card (which has the "brexit agreement" reason mentioned on it) and British passport, but haven't looked into getting a Spanish passport. It'd make a lot of things easier, but also some things more difficult and I've heard that there's like a 3 year waiting list so yeah. It depends on the country, to give some examples, Ireland and the Netherlands have a 5 year settlement requirement, Denmark has 7 years, Germany has 8, while Spain has a 10 year year requirement.
I think you’re right though, you generally have to give up your current citizenship other than a few exceptions. If you’ve been there 10 years then you’ll have the option to convert to citizenship if you wanted to. If you ever wanted to move to another EU country your main option would probably be to get the Spanish passport.

My family and I are all Remain voters. We voted on same morning we were on our way to France for a couple of weeks.
The result wrote off the first full day of the holiday, we were just dumfounded. We each said how we felt embarrassed to be walking around Brittany and felt the need to apologies to people we met.
The French people who did ask us about it were sad and surprised. We just said "so are we".

And as for heritage or pride in the past, this generally seems romanticised and misplaced. British heritage is no different to French, and ultimately a strange thing to be proud of.
