More than 42 million adults in the UK will be overweight or obese by 2040 and at higher risk of 13 types of cancer, an “alarming” report reveals, as health leaders accused ministers of “kicking the can down the road” when it comes to tackling the obesity crisis.

Data collected by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) shows that 71% of people will be overweight by 2040, a rise from 64% today. Of these, almost 36% of adults – 21 million people – will be obese. The charity described the figures as “staggering”.

“These projections should serve as a wake-up call to the government about the state of our nation’s health,” said Michelle Mitchell, the chief executive of CRUK. “Ministers mustn’t keep kicking the can down the road when it comes to tackling the obesity crisis – delaying measures that will lead to healthier food options.”

Last week, the government announced it was delaying measures to tackle unhealthy eating for 12 months. The former Conservative party leader William Hague said the weakening of the anti-obesity strategy was “morally reprehensible”.

The U-turn will mean a ban on buy-one-get-one-free deals for foods high in fat, salt and sugar will be postponed for 12 months. A ban on TV junk food adverts before a 9pm watershed has also been put on hold for a year.

“I urge them to revisit this decision and take bold action on obesity, the second biggest preventable risk factor for cancer in the UK,” said Mitchell.

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of at least 13 different types of cancer and also causes other conditions such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. In the UK, an estimated 22,800 cases of cancer are attributed to obesity every year.

The CRUK report suggests the number of people who are obese could overtake the number who are a healthy weight as early as the late 2020s in England and late 2030s in Northern Ireland. For Scotland and Wales, the crossover is not expected to happen before 2040.

Prence of severe obesity (a body mass index above 40) is expected to almost double across the UK from 3% to 6%. About 60% of women are currently overweight or obese but this is projected to rise to 67% by 2040. Among men, 74% will be overweight or obese by 2040, up from 68% now.

The report also suggests those experiencing higher levels of deprivation could suffer the most. In 2019, 35% of people living in the most deprived areas of England were obese. This is predicted to increase to 46% by 2040. In comparison, 22% of people living in the least deprived areas were obese in 2019, with a predicted rise to 25% by 2040.

Dr Julie Sharp, the head of health and patient information at CRUK, said: “Obesity is a complex issue and the world around us can make it very difficult to keep a healthy weight.

“Government action is key in making sure that the healthy option is readily available and affordable for people and addressing the wider barriers that prevent people from living healthy lives. If these staggering trends continue, obesity will eclipse smoking as the biggest cause of cancer.”

FYI The Netherlands consume more calories per day than us, but have significantly lower rates of obesity/overweight.
Exercise being a casual part of peoples daily lives shouldn’t be underestimated. We should be pushing for walkable neighbourhoods and safe cycle infrastructure so people don’t feel like driving is the only reasonable option.

It's worth adding that on average people in The Netherlands are taller than people in the UK, which would mean that they would require a higher calorie intake to maintain their weight, but I agree that their infrastructure for bikes etc probably also helps!

I gained 5kg in the past 6-9 months.
Since 1st of May I decided to change just 3 things.
a) Eat a bit smaller portions
b) No sweets, I stuff myself with fruits instead now.
c) Instead of driving to shop and doing one big shopping every few days, walk to shop every single day (less than 1 mile each way) and buy just what I need for that day
I already lost 1.5kg.

I know there are lots of different theories and approaches to diets, but presumably they have 'healthier' calories than us as well/a better understanding of healthy and unhealthy food, if that is the case.
If you are over eating and over eating on the wrong sorts of foods, walking to the shops or cycling to work is not going to have enough of an off set. Yes exercise is important but understanding calories and what is in certain foods if going to have a bigger impact on weight loss. I think it is the sort of food stuff that takes people by surprise, like a 'healthy' cereal bar and a medium latte on the away to work and without realising it they are nearly 800 calories on their daily allowance.

This! I used to live in Leeds, and walking/cycling was impossible. Public transport was (and still is) terrible, main roads are polluted beyond compare, and there are shockingly few parks and green spaces within reasonable distance of the city centre. Heck, I’m pretty sure there’s more multi storey car parks in Leeds than actual shops I’d ever want to visit, which is saying a lot considering my love for so many different entertainment mediums and other goods.
Compare this with similar cities elsewhere in Europe like Amsterdam and Munich, where public transport is miles better and there’s plenty of walkable routes into town and a lot more cycling infrastructure, and it’s no wonder why Britain is dead lay in most public health statistics in Western Europe.
In a lot of UK cities, you NEED a car to survive, and it’s killing us.

The awful truth about exercise for weight loss, is that exercise promotes muscle growth. So when people exercise, they lose a bit of fat, they gain a bit of muscle, they get healthier, but their weight doesn't change much, so they give up.

The awful truth about exercise for weight loss
The actual awful truth is that it is an incredibly inefficient means of weight loss. If you are fat, and you want to lose weight, the treadmill is not what you need to look to.
It is hard, it takes lots of time out of your day, and vast majority of people will fucking hate doing it. On top of that, if you're overweight and your running form sucks (and it probably will), you can say goodbye to your knees.
It takes something like 35 minutes of running (not jogging) to burn off a single chocolate bar.
Simply not eating the chocolate bar in the first place, literally saves you a couple of minutes of your day.
I never recommend exercise to people looking to lose weight. If someone is overweight, they need to get their diet in check first, and get their body accustomed to eating the correct number of calories a day.
Then, if they want, they can start exercising for general health benefits.
I have friends who exercise like crazy as their main form of weight management. Then they twist and ankle, or have a bad back for a month, and balloon up again.
It's always more efficient, and easier, and quicker, to just not eat the extra calories your body doesn't need.
Also, too many people attempt diet and exercise right from day 1. It's a tactic destined to fail, for the vast majority of people. You asking someone to do two things, they likely hate. Burnout happens fast, and willpower dwindles.

Cheap-Statement4894
Its often that one chocolate bar that can do it though.
People don’t get obese from one sitting, they get it from exceeding their calories burnt by even 100 calories a day and doing this chronically for years and years.
Exercise is and should always be part of a healthy lifestyle even beyond the weight loss side. It has benefits for your cardiovascular health and mental health among many others.
Saying don’t bother with exercise and just eat less is not the way to solve it, there should be a hybrid approach

Likely this comment will be buried but honestly, I've seen a few articles like this recently and I've become very unsurprised at how many bad takes get upvoted on this subject.
Majority of the comments stating people don't exercise enough. Whilst likely true, not really the cause of the obesity epidemic. Yes you should exercise for lots of reasons but you can't outrun a bad diet and if you aren't addressing that you're probably not gonna lose weight.
Then there's the handful of bad takes about how some are magically obese despite not overindulgence. While this could account for some individuals for the majority this is simply not the case.
Eating less consistently and over time you will lose weight. So it's simple? Fat people are just lazy and/ or too stupid to take care of themselves. Many seem to think that because boiled down to it's essence losing weight/ maintaining a healthy weight is down to calorie consumption this equates to some kind of failing on the person suffering. Yes there is a level of individual responsibility to it but it clearly isn't that easy otherwise we wouldn't be seeing the levels of obesity in these numbers.
Gonna throw this out there, if this is what you say about obesity online and to others about the subject, you are correct on the most basic level but please don't bother. You are not being helpful. You are just making people suffering obesity feel worse and generally feel like they have some kind of moral failing. This doesn't really help tackle the obesity crisis. It just sets people further back in an environment that is already not helping them.
This is a multifactorial problem that won't go away overnight. There are so many environmental factors at play. We have more sedentary jobs plus more calorific food which is literally designed not to satiate constantly marketed at people of all ages. We have families where all adults are expected to work, often leaving those with the least money also with the least time left in their day to go home and cook a healthy nutritious meal. Actual poverty with the added bonus of time poverty because you work 60+ hours a week is gonna lead to making the easy oven food choice. It doesn't mean those people are too stupid to understand those aren't healthy choices. Add to that being bombarded with advertising all the time, some of which is targeted at kids it's not hard to fathom why people might give in and go for the easy option. It takes a concerted effort to make lifestyle changes for yourself, I can't even fathom how hard it must be to do that for not just yourself but for a whole family.
This is why tackling things like adverts kids are seeing are so important. It's why clear messaging is needed around what a healthy diet looks like and how this can be achieved by all. It's why people actually need the space and environment granted to them to make those good choices. It requires a total cultural shift. This is everyone's problem as left unchecked will only further impact the healthcare system and society later down the road.

Exercise doesn’t really help with weight loss though. I know, I’ve tried!
Edit: lol at the downvotes. Pretty much all respected research into this shows that exercise is only 20% of the equation. Food is 80% of it.

That entirely depends on what exercise you’re doing and if you change your diet/eat more bevause of the increased hunger you will have from doing said exercise.
If you just keep a completely identical diet but then start running with some weight training as well to balance out your exercise a few times a week you absolutely will lose weight.
But if you say focus on weight training and eat more then you could gain weight from increased muscle mass.
But to say ‘exercise doesn’t really help with weight loss’ as a general statement simply isn’t true.

Puzzled-Barnacle-200
It depends on the diet. If you are just slightly overeating, gradually putting on weight, exercising more can stop that. But if you are severely overeating it is unfeasible to burn off 1000+ calories a day from exercise.

Low impact cardio doesn't help much with weight loss, resistance/weight training does though its just hard and takes time to see results. I'm losing about 1kg every 2 weeks whilst building muscle. Diet wise I've cut out snacking between meals but that's it.

I mean yes every case is different but for me who used to be on the low end of a normal weight and am now overweight these periods of weight gain are obvious to see.
I gained a chunk of weight when I started having to work long hours in a job I hated. (Still normal but higher end)
Train tickets became too expensive so I learned to motorcycle rather than cycling/using train as I was getting poorer year on year thanks to train prices this made me slightly overweight.
Lockdown came and removed my excersize routine along with anything else that even made me remotely happy (I hate running, I used to swim) my shit job is the only thing I get to do with my time. I became slightly obese by technical measurements.
Lockdown ended and I was promptly evicted by my landlord forcing me to find a new place to live just as rents and house prices went nuts again. Again gained a couple more pounds.
It's almost like food is the one thing I can control in my life and I overeat when I'm miserable and am forced to work under exploitive conditions.
One of my friends came into alot of wealth and she was able to loose a good amount of weight. I mean fair to her, but yeah it's pretty obvious why.

Here I go arguing with redditors again about how it is staggeringly easy to maintain your weight, even when eating junk food and having no time to cook.
There's not a single day where I don't consume some form of pasta heaped in cheese, oven chips, chocolate biscuits etc. and still find it simple to maintain and lose weight.
The overweight/obesity issue in this currently is down to laziness, and a lack of self respect.

People will blame poverty but its not like the country has gotten poorer than it was in 1990 when the obesity rate was way way lower.
And even if "unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food" (it isn't) do you want to know what's even cheaper than that? eating less.

YOU_CANT_GILD_ME
Not just cheaper in price, but cheaper in time.
Many families don't have time to spend in the kitchen to prepare and cook meals, so they rely on ready meals, frozen food, or things that can be cooked quickly.
A home made lasagne will obviously be more healthy than the supermarket frozen ones. But people will rely on the supermarket ones because it's less effort and there's very little price difference in making their own.
