I'm a Hindu and honestly most of the times the Hindus pray not because they're thankful to the god or for meditative purposes but because praying will help make their miserable lives better. They go to temples not because they want to learn something good/spiritual or be thankful for their lives but to ask for things that would make their lives better. Had it not been for their selfish purposes, most Hindus would have never prayed.

I'm an agnostic but my mom constantly persuades me to make a visit to a temple. One day I relented, hoping to learn something good that my religion teaches. I realised what a delusion all these temples are. Not once did I learn anything that's being taught in our Vedas. Most of my visit was just one guy praising the "Sant" (just another dude I don't give a fuck about) for 2 hours and then the Aartis which people sing because, again, they think that it will magically make their lives better. I bet 99% don't even give a shit about what they mean.

I went to the Langar and I had no place to sit. I asked one young lady to adjust and make some space for me which she clearly could have. She went on a tirade and asked me to stay hungry until the next round but refused to co-operate. That was the moment when I questioned the point of all of this. What the fuck are they learning from their religion and their Temple visits? This is the demeanour of the group of people who are supposed to be good to others above anyone else. Honestly, some of the people I know who have never visited a Temple in YEARS are better than most who visit them regularly.

However, when she is not praying, she is one of the foulest women I have encountered in my entire life. There's this interesting map statistic I saw where there was a distinct contraction between the east and west civilization on how they perceive criticism. India was under the "shame" category while Christianity countries had "guilt". I guess you can interpret this as the west has a culture of looking into their actions/regret to better themselves, while Hinduism focuses on your image from others or "shame". Putting down someone else to make you appear better.

I understand you had bad experiences. No religion can say they don't have thieves. But imo, religion is more about your connection to God, and not your connection to religious places. I didn't grow up in an overly religious house. Daily prayer was an option each member of the family had. Ofcourse, we were taught to take bath and be ready to pray on special occasions, along with the do's and don'ts. I don't even go to temple much. I want to, and I like to. But there are so many rules to praying, and honestly, I am scared of breaking any of them. I do consider religious places very sacred, be it for any religion. The vibe is just so different and pure. It's God's home. But then, I have Gods at home, and I still don't pray daily. Am I God fearing? I believe God is someone good and understanding. They won't be offended by my trivial mistakes. My point here is, even though I am so disconnected, there have been instances were I have realised the importance of God. One was when I was at the lowest point in my life. I didn't know where life was headed or if there is a point in even existing anymore. I regard Shiv ji very highly. I go past this Shiv Kali temple nearby, that I rarely visit. I just pay my respects as I cross by the lane everyday. So, on a horrible day, as I was passing by the temple lane, I just thought, "My life is in your hands now. I don't have the strength to go on anymore." A few days later, I met my husband for the first time. I, personally, haven't come across anyone who is a bigger Shiv Bhakt than him. (Don't mistake my words, he actually doesn't believe in visiting temples much, but had read and gained a lot of knowledge about our religion) He changed my life so much, for the better. For me, he is God sent.

Second incident that cemented my belief in God was, my baby, then 6-7 months old. She was born right before first covid lockdown began. I hadn't taken her to any temple. I almost never prayed, since there was no help at home and I had no time. But this baby, who had just learnt to crawl, would go and sit by our little temple at home that had photos of Gods. She didn't try to touch anything. She would just sit and stare. She started respecting God, without us ever introducing her to the concept.

Dunno what the couple was doing before the video began or what the mob did with the couple after the video ended. In the video they were holding each other close and giving each other the quickest pecks on the lips. Lady does pull up her lower outfit when she stands up in the water as the guy is pulled away by the mob could be because of the weight of the water pulling it down or because they were going at it underwater.
