Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will not manufacture cars in India if the country does not allow it to sell and service its electric vehicles.
When asked by a Twitter user Friday if Tesla would be manufacturing a plant in India in the future, Musk said the move cannot happen under the country's current rules.
"Tesla will not put a manufacturing plant in any location where we are not allowed first to sell & service cars," Musk tweeted.
The team Musk hired in India last year has since been instructed to focus on the Middle East and the larger Asia-Pacific markets.

Musk's comments come as the Indian government has yet to accept his demand to reduce import duties on Tesla cars.
Indian leaders have made multiple failed appeals for Musk to bring Tesla to India.

The vendors are available, we offer all kinds of technology and because of that, Musk can reduce the cost," Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said during the Raisina Dialogue 2022 conference last month, according to TribuneIndia.com.

Musk had tweeted in January that he could not release Tesla vehicles in India yet due to "challenges with the government." And last summer, the billionaire posted to Twitter that he would like to launch Teslas in India, but the country's import duties are "the highest in the world by far of any large country."
India currently levies a 100% tax on imported vehicles costing more than $40,000, inclusive of insurance and shipping expenses. Cars that cost less than $40,000 face a 60% import tax.

I think its good for India. Firstly, most(>95%) people do not have enough money to buy a Tesla, even if prices go down due to local manufacturing. Its sort of like the iPhone, it's a super luxury product(even after local manufacturing or assembling). Second, I don't find a legit connection between ability to sell and service cars vs manufacturing them, the only things I can think of is he wants to "test" the Indian market by importing or he is ashamed to admit, that Indians cannot afford a Tesla. They are 2 totally different aspects. The government is ready to provide incentives to manufacture locally, if he feels they aren't enough he is free to negotiate those terms. We are in a lucky situation where we can say "fine we don't need you". Unlike phones, where we had to rely on Chinese imports since Apple and Samsung(in the early days) was not ready to manufacture here, we have a very promising EV industry locally. Minister Gadkari has shown personal interest in working with EV and more importantly Hydrogen cars. There are 4 good things about hydrogen:
There is a large push by Japan towards hydrogen, especially Toyota. Since we have a good working relationship with them and most importantly factories for these companies already exist in India, it is easy to repurpose them for Hydrogen cars.
We have a good local CNG/LPG cylinder industry in India, H2 uses a similar concept for storage. The problem with our CNG "packaging" industries is the cost of the gas itself, manufacturing the cylinders is cheap.
There is less infrastructure burden for setting up H2 stations as compared to EV stations, we can repurpose some of our petrol pumps. I've heard a lot of arguments against this saying, "Dude for H2 you need a separate pump and storage infra, for EV you just need a socket and electricity, every petrol station has that". It's not that simple. Yes EV charging only requires sockets but the bigger problem is space. A average sized petrol station can fill up ~100 cars or more in an hour. An EV station would require 10x more space for parking and since charging is not done quickly they stick around for ~30mins, whereas for petrol is 5min, fill up and go. Also, most petrol stations have a CNG alternative and thus have facility to store cylinders for H2 if needed. Also, H2 fills up wayyy faster.
Climate change: EV stations would put a massive burden on our electricity grid which isn't in the best of shape. Since we rely heavily on coal for most of it, we would make our climate change goals even worse.
