With Roe v. Wade overturned, has that made America great again?

I think not.
Something happened just today that make me think not.
My daughter and her children (the oldest is 16) have always put on and participated in HUGE 4th of July celebrations. Block parties, all the neighbors celebrating together, closed streets, twelve barbecues on front lawns, thousands of dollars worth of fireworks being set off all along the block.

They’re having a bit of financial trouble so asked my daughter if we could supply some funds so the kids would not be disappointed.
Her response?…
“We are not celebrating the 4th. Mom, two of my three children, and I were just declared second class citizens. We will not be celebrating that.”

Those who think it has are rejoicing right now. The rest of us are ashamed. Republicans are terrified though. It shows and it’s like kind of desperation like when morons follow their leader blindly into a pit of vipers.
We are doing a great job of talking about the absolute travesty overturning Roe v. Wade has done to women in this country. But as Billy Mays would say “wait, there’s more!”

Republicans will now work on passing criminal laws for women who don’t abide by their rules. Some of which will be felony charges which typically on those states. Takes away the right to vote.
This is not being talked about enough. But pay attention that’s their end game. Make everything those who don’t vote for them do illegal or harder to do and start taking away their rights. This is the “freedom or death” crowd. They are too stupid to see the irony.

I would argue that overturning Roe v. Wade neither “made America great” nor ruined it. We can get overly dramatic about it, sure, because outrage sells and some of Clarence Thomas’ remarks do spark plenty of reason for genuine concern when it comes to the precedent this sets. Some conservative states have already allowed their ‘trigger laws’ to formally outlaw abortion going forward.

That said, if you really want to undergo an abortion, you can and will find a way for it. It may be illegal to travel out of state to one of the many states that do allow it, sure, but if you don’t tell people your purpose in traveling they’ll be none the wiser — you would be in the first trimester and not visibly pregnant anyway because once you reach that stage, you wouldn’t be allowed to abort the child either way even in more liberal states.

This isn’t the end of civil liberties, America has not become Taliban adjacent and life isn’t like the Handmaiden’s Tale…. outrage is fun. And addictive. And its okay to be bothered but aside from some extra hassle I doubt the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will “force” many more women to give birth. What it will mainly do is inconvenience a great many ladies who find themselves pregnant and decide they wish to terminate their pregnancy. Which is unpleasant for those directly involved but hardly the end of the world in the grand scheme of things.
The whole “slippery slope” argument may apply, however — emboldened by the recent ruling, Clarence Thomas and his little gang of aging conservative misfits may go after gay marriage next. Gay relationships. And there are rulings in favor of interracial marriage, too, but no worries, Clarence Thomas won’t touch those — he’s in an interracial marriage himself. Whatever doesn’t affect these people, however, is fair game it seems.

During my lifetime the view of America, held by the rest of the developed world, has changed.
In the sixties the USA was looked up to as a scientific and commercial leader.
Now the USA is seen as a rather backwards, failing democracy sliding into theocracy and fascism.
The decline was gradual and there was possibly an uplift when Obama was elected.

But the circus that followed and culminated in the election of the orange clown caused a massive decline in the USAs standing.
The problem is modern communications, internationalisation of business and social media have opened the blinds and let the world see inside the USA.
The Trump administration, his lack of statesmanship, his lack of class, lying, self promotion and criminal behaviour eroded that further.
This latest atrocity by the religion and fascist controlled legal hierarchy is an atrocity and a deprivation of personal freedom.

America isn't the land of the free. It's oppressed by a religion controlled facsict party that isn't even currently the democratically elected administration.
It runs a healthcare as a business, tips every scale in favour of the wealthy and cares nothing for the majority of the population and regularly ignores the will of the majority.
America will never be great again. It's broken.
It's position as the leading economic power is under serious threat.
It's, self appointed, position as leader of the free world is lost on moral grounds.

In Ohio a 10 year old girl was sexually abused. At six weeks and three days she was diagnosed as being pregnant. Because she lives in Ohio, the abused, raped, little girl was “too pregnant” to qualify for an abortion by three days.
Imagine yourself as a 4th grader. At the age of 10 a child's body is not meant to give birth. You most likely are still playing with dolls, giggling at boys, playing outside after school.

A 10 year old girl's body cannot handle the birth of a baby. Her pelvis is not developed or big enough to deliver a baby. The birth would require a C-section. The girl’s body has not grown enough to accommodate the growing fetus resulting in low birth rate. The little girl has a greater risk of death due to bleeding, toxemia, hemorrhage, an incredibly long and difficult labor, severe anemia, and disability.
I have grandchildren that child's age. I am appalled and disgusted to know that a group of angry, old white men with no knowledge of science or fact have decided that it is just fine and dandy to force a 10 year old child who was raped to give birth. Yep, a fetus the size of a pea, that cannot survive on its own, is more important than the life a walking, talking, functioning child.

The 10 year old girl was taken to Indiana for an abortion. Soon, Indiana's laws will change and this option would not have been possible.
As to the concept that this pregnancy is a gift from God, I ask who's God? The God I believe in never said that one religion is more right than another, or takes precedence over another. There are 600 laws of Moses and not one comment on abortion. One Mosaic law states that miscarriage is not the death of a human. If a pregnant woman was assaulted and miscarried the attacker would be fined, if the woman died the attacker would be killed.
The concept that life begins at conception is wrong. In Genesis 2:7 when God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, the man became a living soul.” Jewish law, you know the religion that birthed Christianity, considers that life begins at birth.

So, if those who thump their bible, demand that only their beliefs are valid in this country, and think nothing of torturing and endangering the life of a 10 year old little girl, would stop desperately trying to twist words and use obscure passages to validate barbaric laws and instead accept Moses, Jesus, and Paul ignored every chance to condemn abortion maybe our Constitution and country will be respected.

No, it hasn't made America great again. Far from it. The very foundation of the USA seems to be at issue here.
When the landmark Roe v Wade legal decision was reached in 1973, it was on the basis that to deny women the right to abortion would be in contravention of the right to privacy embodied in the 14th amendment of the US Constitution. The court maintained that a woman’s right to an abortion was implicit in this right to privacy.

Now it has been decided that women do not have this inherent right to abortion - that it is not implicit in the ‘right to privacy’.
So it seems that the very constitution of the USA - or at least the understanding of it - is highly mutable and unstable.
To me, that does not paint a picture of an America that is ‘great’ in any way. Rather it seems weak, regressive, and a country that has demoted women to the status of second class citizens.

Of course not. You’ve just sent America backwards by at least 50 years.
You don’t make a country great by removing people’s rights, in the name of a God that not everyone believes in. The rest of the world is looking on in horror, as Gilead is being created in front of our very eyes. In case you hadn’t realised (because I know some Americans think that “1984” was what George Orwell wanted to happen), “The Handmaid’s Tale” is not a fucking guide to living.

Viktor Renquist
Let me answer this with a series of questions.
Given the US already has some of the highest maternal childbirth death rates in the OECD, do you think that increasing that rate further will make the US great?
Given the US has no universal healthcare system, free at the point of delivery, do you think increasing bankruptcy rates for young families and single parents will make the US great?
Do you think increasing the numbers imprisoned, in what is already the most incarcerated nation in the world, per capita will make the US great?

Do you think that becoming an international political pariah will make the US great?
Do you think having states divided against themselves and already flagging that they will obstruct the policies and laws of states with whom they disagree will make the US great?
Do you think adding hundreds of thousands to the foster care system will make the US great?

Do you think that oppressing religious freedom … Islam grants any woman a right to abortion within 120 days of conception while Judaism grants absolute rights to abortion in the case of the health of the mother being effected … makes the US great?
Do you consider that deliberately making it harder for single mothers to work will make the US great?
Do you think that potentially having the country descend into civil war will make the US great?
Do you think that having women flee to other states, or even other nations, will make the US great?

Only if you think evil is great. From the perspective of normal, non-evil people, America is just proving that it can't live up to the ideals it used to strive to embody.

Tim Crannigan
Of course not, it is turning into a theocracy, much like those run by other fundamentalist countries whom America purports to despise so much - and thus removing freedom after freedom.
What happened to the USA of the 60s - the counter-culture, the hope for peace, and for sticking it to the Man?
Well, the Man won in the end. Although, sadly, not the woman, who is now a second-class citizen in red states.

The USA is now becoming a pariah in the view of the world, along with N.Korea, Russia et al.
And all, in my view, just to enrich the few.
Shame on them, and I pity the rest.
What the Republicans (and the corrupt form of Christianity now running rampant) have done to America is scarecely believable.
And utterly repugnant.

Trump promised to appoint only Supreme Court judges who would overturn Roe. Now that the Court has done so, presumably those who wanted America to be ‘great again’, meaning ‘just like it was when abortion was illegal’ feel that that that is one step in the right direction.
Now, if they can get rid of same-sex marriage, contraception, inter-racial marriage, those will be considered good moves also.
VOTE BLUE AT ALL LEVELS.

Michael Lopez
No, we are descending into a Theocracy. A Theocracy that will eventually attack anyone who they disagree with. Including African-Americans, Native-Americans, Catholics,Jews, Hispanics and anyone else who dares stand up to them.

Walt Huber
It could make things worse.
The reason the current court did what it did is that as they say: “There is nothing in the constitution that guarantees a woman’s right to abortion. This is probably because the word “abortion” was not even a word associated with woman’s health when the constitution was written.
I think the Roe vs. Wade decision was a brilliant compromise between the rights of the woman and the rights of the unborn. They split it in three segments. Of course, this did not satisfy the extremes on the opposite ends of the spectrum that wanted: No abortions for any reason and those that wanted an abortion at any point from conception to birth.
The late/great writer, economist, professor Walter Williams would often write a column about the unintended consequences of good deeds. The classic was 100 years ago when Carrie Nation convince many women to vote to outlaw alcohol. This good deed was going to eliminate all the problems in our society caused by the consumption of alcohol. Did it work? NO, it did not. It caused more problems. People still wanted alcohol and it created organized crime to supply the demand.
To me, this SCOTUS decision sounds like it might fall into this “unintended consequence of good deeds” category. It could cause many new problems, like we do we do in this country with the hundreds of thousands of unwanted babies every year now that must be carried to term? Will all the states rushing regulations to totally ban any abortions, address how to care for these unwanted newborns?

Stari Byrd
Three days after the decision, in Ohio which had a trigger law in place, a 10 year old child had to be taken to Indiana for an abortion. 10 years old. How any American can feel like celebrating when we have children being denied care after whatever trauma caused a 10 year old child to need this procedure.
My family has fought for this country for around 300 years. I have been disappointed in the past but overall proud, now I am ashamed of this country. I hope we are able to turn this around and get an America where children aren't forced to go through these things. No decent person can be okay with this. 10 years old, and she will know for the rest of her life that she had to find a place where she was human enough to count more then that lump of cells some worthless man caused.
Fuck “Pro-Life” feelings. Live children need our protection and I thank God for the doctors who made sure this live 10 year old abuse victim got what was needed to at least reduce her suffering when her supreme court and state failed her so badly. It is our turn to fight, even if all we can do to fight is use our voice, and vote for people who will truly protect our children and get rid of those who would make this so bad that child would not get the medical care she needed.

Joan Vredik Broadley
If your definition of “great” includes no rights for people of colour and any non-traditional sexual orientation, then your Roe vs Wade has not gone far enough. This decision immediately only affects the right to abortion. You need to get back to a time when a white person could not marry a coloured person. When even married couples could not access artificial birth control. When women had to leave their careers when they got married. When everyone following any religion but Christianity was considered inferior. I believe that’s what those Republicans who want America to be “great again” are working towards.

Alex Heney
It has made America significantly further away from being “Great Again”.
The rest of the world is looking on with horror as America slides back away from the modern world.

Nick Thornhill
The US has never been particularly ‘great’, especially for minorities.
It’s now the most dysfunctional and ‘backwards’ country in the western world.

Colin Bryant
it will certainly make usa’s population greater, im sure.
what is done with that extra sudden population will determine whether or not usa is great again.
the rest of the continent is largely unaffected by the decision though.
