Congress workers staged sit-ins across various locations in protest at what they say is a move that jeopardises national security and the future of young people. On June 14, the government had announced the so-called 'Agnipath' or 'Path of Fire' scheme which seeks to recruit soldiers, sailors and airmen into the armed forces for just a four year tenure.

Evolution through technology is just natural and important, the time for huge armies is gone. With that the country and goverment should try and ease the change, education and support financially to some degree during this time of transition.

I think the Indian Government has got it right. I served 7 years in the Canadian army. If you want to earn a pension, then qualify; be better than the 25% fail rate. Sounds good to me. The recruitment program only targets young men that only want a steady job anyway. It's not like your ruining their life.. they get to move on.

As someone who had visited India, I will say most protests are happening in north India where people are obsessed with government jobs. North Indian states don't have private sectors, has barely an important industry. Those Indian people in the west you see working for tech companies/advance technologies industries are majority from the South.

In case of war, the temporary army can be called upon for permanent commission. This way the pension bill, modernization of army & maintaining a young army can be maintained. India's challenges are not any different to that of Europe due to presence of 150 plus nuclear bombs & launch vehicles by India.

@Alchemist Exactly what i am saying, the conflict between India and China or India and Pakistan is very different from the wars that USA fights. Firstly, there is no border conflict between Canada and USA. Plus USA fights all it's wars abroad. There is a reason why India, China and Pakistan have large permanent armies. Parts of their armies are always deployed at the borders to prevent advancement and protect. The borders aren't flat land where tanks will drive across the borders and occupy the whole country like you see in movies

Agreed, I was thinking this is a very standard practise in western militaries. Keeps the useless officers from sitting in cushy jobs and promotes actual competent leadership. And means that you have vast trained reserves that you dont also have to support until you call them back for duty.

That's untrue. My dad served in the army for 15 years in the signal wing. He wasn't an officer yet he managed to become the general manager of Reliance telecommunications. He later got a state government job after clearing the exam. You seem to be highlighting your insecurities. Just because you served in the army doesn't entitle you the best job in the country. Your career in the private sector depend on your skills, education & positivity. A pessimistic person like you is the last thing a company want to hire. I am saying this based on my own experience in the industry.

Edit- Not even the army like to hire pessimists, they got tough psychometric exams to wean out such candidates, although i am unaware whether the same standard of SSB interview is maintained for soldier recruitment as in the officer category.

Yes India is different in many ways, however India is changing. How long can India hang onto old ways which are inefficient. When one joins the military, one is supposed to serve the country and do what the country needs above one's own needs. The army training is a path that increases the probability of escaping poverty. There are no more known guarantees in a capitalistic country. It's about continuous change and competition. Yes it's scary and government jobs and old military jobs were popular paths towards escaping the unknown of the capitalistic system. Teaching farm boys to function competitively in a competitive economy will bring more Indians out of poverty in the long run.

Corrupt governments gave young people easy jobs for votes and approval, and when they ran out of money they just took out those jobs, lots of people had no other choice because they were told for decades that was their life. India is facing the same situation right now, you will realize that you just cant take those jobs away without any consequences. Sooner or later, corruption reaches the surface.

We have many, many awful problems, lots of corruption, but at least our youth is not trying to actively scam older people for their money. That shows you what Indias culture is all about. The salaries & pension bill of existing 1.3 million soldiers make up 73% of total defence budget. This has severly kept the army outdated even against Pakistan army ( as seen during the Balakot strikes ). India flew USSR built MiG 21 into Pakistan while the Pakistani were flying more advanced American F16s. They even managed to shoot down one plane & capture one pilot. There is simply no money to modernize the army unless of course the civilian budget of such an impoverished country is to be reduced ( thus reducing GDP growth at a time of high consumer inflation). Employment in army should not be seen as an entitlement, but previlage. It is definitely not the job of Indian army to give employment to the unemployed but to win wars against the Chinese. It should be noted that even the Chinese have cut down their army size to compete against the US army. There is NO alternative to this problem unless Indian government make some sucess in attracting low cost manufacturing that is leaving China.

India is in great need. US military gets no benefits after 4 years of service either except healthcare. It’s a guaranteed job for 4 years though and it isn’t that hard to perform it. Stand with your country young people of India because China is coming for you and they badly need your help.
