I had this happen once, I had found a new job that paid better and was closer to me so I gave my notice saying I would be leaving on X date in two weeks. My manager took the sheet and crumpled it up saying this is the busiest time of year, you can’t quit until X date - like a month and a half later. I took out my phone and called the new place and said something along the lines of “good news, I didn’t actually have to give notice at my other job so I can go full time right away!”
Unless they’re offering more money/better hours/better benefits etc. they can’t reject a resignation.

It happened to me a couple of times…
First time: I wanted to quit as I got an offer with more money, my boss spoke to me (I really respect him until today) and said, if you believe it is better for your career then I wont stop you, but if you are going only for more money, then while I can promise a raise but will not match the offer. I took his advice, stayed back and quit when I got the chance to go to US. That time, he said, this time, I am happy to let you go.
This time, the boss took it to his ego, offered me a higher grade with more money than the offer… but I could sense his ego being hurt to decline his offer, I refused politely and quit to join the new job. I am happy that I took that decision as it was life changing.
Third time, my boss again wanted me to stay back as he thought I am quitting coz of organizational reasons. When I reasoned him that I feel its time for me to go Home (I was working in UAE that time), he just said, “There is No place like Home or Heavens, rest are all compromises”. He still asked me to stay until his retirement which was only 3 months away and we agreed to leave the same time, he got retired and I quit the same time.
I feel, your relationship with your Boss/Manager/Senior is very important and I learnt it in during very early stages of my life. After that, I always tried to have the best relationship with my boss and barring one exception. I feel, you can work with a demanding boss but cannot work with an unreasonable one.

That happened in two of the last three jobs I quit. Both of those bosses told me they were already preparing my promotion with great new responsibilities and a large pay increase blah blah blah.
In one case I didn't even listen and in both cases I said, “Thank you, but no thanks.” I thought that if they wanted to reward me for an accomplishment that was widely recognized, including by them, and made a boatload of money for the company, but gave me no benefit, they could have done it or at least mentioned it before I submitted my resignation.
I didn't trust them. An employer who hasn't appreciated great results in the past will keep the pressure on to exceed top performance in the future, but not pay you or give any other reward for it.
Besides that, I, the only woman among my group of consultant team managers, was treated differently. Smaller office, considerably lower salary, small slights like cheaper car on assignments, fewer trips home from long assignments. My boss even told me straight out that he “couldn't let” me be paid as much as a man.

But for someone else, I suggest being very sure of what the current employer's offer is and whether or not they'll deliver on it and as sure as you can be that the new job is what it promises to be.
Compare them like two different job offers and decide which you will like best. Corporate culture, your boss, future development and opportunity, and job satisfaction are very important. Much more than the money.
Remember why you wanted to leave your current company and don't even think about company loyalty. Companies haven't been loyal to employees for decades.
Also remember that prospective new employers tell you everything that's good and little that's bad about the job and their company. And that's the honest ones. If they want you, they are interviewing for you just as you are for them, but unlike you, there are no repercussions for them if they are not forthright with you.
So use your best people reading skills in the interviews and research to the extent that you can , including asking contacts in the company if you have any.
I hope that, whatever you decide, you end up with a great job that you love!

As an Assistant Manager, I witnessed this exact thing happen. An 18 year old Front of House team member, who was absolutely a spectacular employee in every aspect put in his two weeks notice because he was going to work in the summer at his father’s construction company and was then going away to college after summer was over, so he put in notice over a month prior to his last day. The General Manager of the store told him no, that we needed him and he wasn’t allowed to quit.
This guy was the absolute best, and I was so sorry to see him go, as well as certain that I would never find anyone who would be able to do as good a job as he, but he had done right by us by giving us a huge amount of advance warning, and, considering how rough the job is to start with, we were so lucky that he had stayed with us as long as he did. I took him aside later that day, and told him that he had given notice, we had received it, and no matter what the General Manager says, just don’t show up after the date you gave. It is that simple. Just don’t show up.

There are a couple of schools of thought on this. From the employer’s perspective, if a good employee is punching out, the company (and her manager) likely haven’t made a good effort to retain them. The loyalty of the employee is then suspect as well, so retention may end up being wasted money. So most companies will cut their losses and wave good bye. From the employee’s perspective, when the company makes a diving save to try to retain the employee, the employee has to ask, “If I’m so great, how come it took me leaving to get recognized?” So the employee is going to feel used. Neither viewpoint is particularly healthy.

But every now and then, a diving save works out well for all parties. In my case, I had a crappy manager and we never saw eye to eye. He told me at one point that I was capped out in salary and there was no room for a promotion. Then I became aware of planning for a big layoff and figured that he’d use that to get rid of me. I started looking and progressed through a series of interviews with a company that was a client of ours and we were a client of theirs. I knew that those sorts of contracts often had “no poaching” clauses, so I went to the General Counsel (who I worked with regularly, even though I was relatively junior) and asked him if getting a job offer from that company would be a problem. He said he’d check and called me a couple days later. There was no issue, but he made me promise to call him if I got an offer. A week or so later, I had the offer.. healthy raise, name brand firm, really good opportunity. I called the GC. “C’mon by at 5:00”. I did, told him my story, including the part where I expected the axe within the week. “You’re not leaving,” he said. I replied, “I’m not sure you have much to say about that.” He raised his eyebrows and said, “Don’t do anything until you talk to [my boss’ boss] in the morning.” Now I’m in the middle of a complete “Oh $#&*!, what have I done?” moment. This cannot end well. Next morning, I was at my desk before the birds chirped, discretely clearing out my desk. Big boss walks by, comes to a halt, and says, “I’ll be right back.” He comes back, sits down, and proceeds to ask me why I was leaving. I tell him. He asks to see the offer. I show him. “Wait here,” he says. He’s back in ten minutes. Tells me he’s matching the offer, but some things were going to change. Swears me to secrecy. Layoffs and reorg were being announced a day later and he was about to walk me through changes that impacted me. I was being relieved of people management, but they needed me to do more consultative and subject matter expertise work. He proceeded to give me a bunch of attaboys and tell me how highly people thought of me, so would I please stay? I asked, “What about [my boss]? What does he think?” I was told not to worry about that and I should communicate more with [my boss’s boss]. He said he’d let me think about it for a bit. Net of it was that I stayed and had a great five more years until I got an offer that I couldn’t refuse. Everyone (even my boss) seemed happy about me staying.

In retrospect, I was very likely being paid pretty well below market, so the match wasn’t a big deal. But I liked the company and most of the people I worked with, and the changed responsibilities were really helpful as I advanced elsewhere.
Now that’s a positive outcome in a relatively positive situation. If the “No” response is in the context of, “We’re going to make your life miserable”, then you have a completely different situation. First, ensure that you understand the company’s policies and your obligations. If you have an employment contract, make sure you have a copy at home. And whatever you do, don’t go downloading any company files or customer lists. Make sure you turn in everything that was issued to you. Get a written receipt and/or take pictures (if you can). Cut up company credit cards (if you can get the card cancelled, do so). Hopefully, well before you reach this point, you’ve taken home personal items and gotten personal items off your company computer and mobile phone (don’t put them there in the first place). Most of all, understand the rights and obligations of both your employer and yourself. And at some point, you may need an employment lawyer, so keep good records and notes.

I had been promoted to GM along with being one of the first two to pioneer out of California into Nevada . It was 1996 and myself and Jim Rowley took on the challenge. Imo I was excited, hell you can say I was proud too. I just got out of prison and was doing everything that anyone would say was nothing short of awesome. Except for my middle eastern parole officer. PK was her name . Initials for Paulous Klusingham. She was the worst ! She would have me report once a week and have me wait 40–60 min after our scheduled appointment time. If I failed to show up I would have a warrant for arrest and that would result in going back to San Quentin for 90–360 days. Yes I never missed a appointment. Of course that changed to once a month after 12 months. Then 3 months after being transferred to the new Reno Club I got the phone call from PK . Hello this is Rich’. - PK. “ Mr Richard I hear you are working outside the 50 mile circle… be in my office at 9 am tomorrow or I send warrant out for your arrest”My life ,my accomplishments and everything else positive was about to get sucked back into the abyss. So I called the operations mgr and briefed him on what had just happened then I called realator from Century 21 and told him I had to cancel all plans re: home purchase.
Next I was in a uhaul on highway 50 headed back to Bay Area. Then I was there at 9:00 am and of course she made me wait till just before 10am. No violation just a bottle to pee in.

So I lost my position and pay grade went back to AGM and life started to suck. Now I have a 47 mile commute to Fairfield club and I’m not liking the staff ( sharks and fraudsters) writing bad deals just to look good and stealing deals from the new hires. Prior to leaving the state to start up new Nevada clubs. I was offered a sales job with cellular one from a woman I closed a personal training package durning closeout .

So I prepared a letter of resignation and I made a copy . I hit up my DM. Rich Tilgen and I causally hand it to him while he was passing me on his way to the GM’s office. Next I’m on my way to go out for lunch and as I am passing the front desk I hear Rich over the phones PA system saying “ hey front desk stop Richard before he walks out that door.. “. Ok yes I was a little flattered by that , even more so by the fact that when I went back to see what he wanted me stopped for he had the GM , himself and corporate on speakerphone with VP John Romeo and new president Craig Pepin-Donat, and they all start trying to convince me into staying with the company . So I just stood my ground and loud enough for all to hear in room and on speaker phone I thanked 24 for having me and all the experience n knowledge I was able to acquire but I will be leaving in two weeks.

After being fired because of a housemate conflict, I got a phone call that the President of the company wanted to meet with me. I went in and met with him. He said he wanted to give me a raise. I said he couldn’t do that because I had been fired. He said that wasn’t right because I couldn’t even quit without his permission. He hired me on the spot and gave me a little raise. I quit a few days later though because the environment had become hostile. He understood.
The housemate conflict was the result of unfortunate accidental flooding of his room in a waterbed incident. Unfortunately, he was the most valuable employee at the company and I was not.
I guess it is not uncommon for a boss to say no, but of course what he says next will be most interesting.
