About 20 years ago, living in New York City, I had a terrible asthma attack. Being too poor to afford an ambulance, I used my last air to call a taxi and then staggered downstairs from my apartment to meet it. In my haste, and desperation, I neglected to check my purse for cash and found I had no money. But the driver heard my wheezing and drove me to the emergency entrance of the closest hospital and simply wished me well. Two days later, when the doctors decided it was safe to let me go home I called another taxi, with the intention of promising to go up into my apartment to get the money to pay him. By bizarre luck, it was the same driver, and he explained that I didn’t have to pay him this time either. His son was asthmatic, and had to be driven to the emergency more than once. He was happy to be able to help me in this small way.

Back during the recession, I was actually the recipient of two of the most amazing acts of kindness, and though they differed enormously in terms of dollar value, I’ve never forgotten either.

The smaller of the two was at Great Clips. I’d gone in for a badly needed haircut, and was hoping I could get it done for free, for donating my hair to charity, a local group that makes human-hair wigs for ladies who suffer hair loss from cancer treatment. Alas, my hair wasn’t long enough, so I would have to pay the $14 or whatever it was — I could barely afford it, but I figured I could put it on my credit card, as there was just about enough credit remaining to cover it. But when I got done, and went to the desk to pay, I was told that it was already paid. Someone who’d been sitting waiting their turn had paid for my haircut for me. I had no idea who it was, as they’d already left.

The second was a LOT more money, and was from a business, which made it even more remarkable. We desperately needed tires for our truck; two were nearly bald, and the other two weren’t in great shape either, but all we could conceivably afford was 2. So we’re sitting there waiting, and a guy comes out and says to my husband, “Mr. Duncan, you know all four of your tires need replacing.”

My husband said yes, but 2 was all we could afford; we’d have to wait till we could afford it, to come back and get the other 2.

The guy says, “We don’t want any of our customers to be driving around on tires that unsafe, so we’re putting 4 tires on.” My husband argued with him, that we couldn’t possibly afford all 4, but the guy said “No, you only need to pay for 2; the other two are just so that you stay alive to be our customer in the years ahead.”

Needless to say, we were both flabbergasted. I said “I don’t know what to say.” The young man said “Just say thank you.” So we both did, from the bottom of our hearts.

The business? Discount Tire, here in Lawrenceville, GA. They’ll have our business for as long as we live! And nowadays we buy Michelins — I hope they’re getting a decent retail markup. Please patronize them, if you live in this area, because they’re by far the kindest and most ethical business I’ve ever encountered.

I broke my neck in a car accident a few days before Purim, a Jewish holiday. I was taken to a hospital in Bend, Oregon, a bit of a distance from my home in Portland.
Two days later a pair of strangers came in to visit me with a box of homemade hamantaschen, the traditional pastry for Purim. A mutual friend had called them and walked them through the process of making hamantaschen for me. (This was before the internet.) Best hamantaschen I ever had.

It is probably irrelevant, but I want to mention it. He was a bearded Muslim, and if I had not been so short of air on my first trip with him, I might have been intimidated. How wrong I would have been. He was the kindest man I ever met.

This was such a good story, so glad you shared it. While I lived in Florida, many of of my friends were horrified because I had become friends with my Muslim mechanic and his uncle who ran the shop. I was in such a dire position there. I'd had to leave my job at 62. I was taking care of my mom who was elderly with kidney disease and congenital heart disease. I also had an unreliable car. They both helped me in so many ways! I moved after mom passed, but I will never forget them. Good people are just good people, plain and simple, regardless of color, creed, or nationality. When will we realize that!

My late parents had very good Muslim friends (brothers) who owned a garage and serviced all our cars. My dad also referred all his friends there and when he was managing his company’s fleet of cars, had those serviced there as well. As Orthodox Jews, some people were quite surprised that we were so friendly with a Muslim family.
They were some of the nicest people I have ever met. When they couldn’t get a part for my dad’s Nissan, one of the brothers loaned him his own Mercedes 500SE for several months.
we went out to dinner with them before we all immigrated. There were hugs and tears all round. Moral of the story: don’t judge people on preconceived ideas or societal norms.

I knew several Muslims while working at Boeing and they were amongst the nicest people I've met. They just wanted to live their lives in peace. Many of them were scared to death after 9/11 that people would turn on them but being in an industry that required an education and rational, far thinking, they were assured that they were not to blame. Being a Muslim doesn't automatically make one a terrorist. Less rational, shortsighted closed minded people need to realize this.

Like me. I lived 10 minutes from the World Trade Center and harbored an irrational hatred and fear of Muslims. What cured my stupidity? Traveling around the world and interacting with more Muslims, which led me to believe I was being an idiot. I still cry on 9/11 but I don’t blame an entire faith for the actions of a few evil Muslims, hell we have evil so called Christians as well Look at what happened to Shinzo Abe yesterday There are good and evil people in every religion, I just had to rev up those critical thinking skills again

Yes, if I’m going to make assumptions or fear terrorism from a specific group, it will be the Republicans, specifically the Trumpanzees. If I see someone wearing camo or a plate carrier, or other pseudo-military gear, I will assume they are enemies of mine until proven otherwise.

Yes, my stepmom thought that she was having a minor hear attack (she'd had them before), but didn't call an ambulance because she was still paying off an earlier ambulance bill. She didn't see a Dr until says later. It's a ridiculous system we have in the US.

Thank you for mentioning that. Holding Muslims collectively responsible for terrorist attacks—while not holding members of other groups responsible for the crimes of their members is nothing but hypocrisy.
And it doesn’t help that the imagery of muslims which is intentionally shaped by the news media, revolves around terrorism and extremism. So your answer means a lot. Thank you. I wish you the best.

On my shelf I have a copy of the Quran that was mailed to me by a cab driver who I had a conversation with.
He asked me if I had read the Quran, I said no, and he offered to send me a copy if I gave him my address.
I feel guilty for not having read the whole thing, though I have dipped into it from time to time.
It struck me as an extraordinarily kind and human gesture on his part, offering to educate me about his religion and culture. I won't forget him.

What shocks me is not that cabbie drove you free of charge but that you had to PAY FOR AN AMBULANCE. WTF. So glad to be British. My asthma medication is free, long term chronic condition and the drugs I have to take for manic depression cost a tenner every two months. My asthma is well controlled because it doesn't cost me to see my GP
My nephews diabetic stuff from insulin to strips, free.
Yes I know we pay through our taxes but isn't that a better way to make sure everyone can profit from care rather than just a few.

Wow, I’m surprised it’s free to call an ambulance over there!! Here in America, I think it costs a couple thousand dollars, so a lot of people will call a Lyft or a taxi 。

I’m an Orthodox Jew, living in Israel. I’ve met many, many Muslims, and they’ve all been very good people. There are a few bad apples, and I feel for all the law abiding Muslims who just want to live their lives and not get lumped in with terrorists.

As I am sure you know that they are a few bad apples within the Jewish community also and every other religion on the planet

I have many Muslim friends from Palestine - they would do anything for me even though I am not Muslim (am a Christian) and I would do the same for them. I think this world is jaded from a “few” bad apples from ANY religion - we have to remember that they are humans first….there are bad people from any race, religion, country, etc.
