The consultancy forecasts that bills could then rise to £4,426 in April before easing. Only a week ago Cornwall Insight predicted the energy price cap was on track to rise to £3,615 a year from January.

The former chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a £15bn support package for consumers in May, including £400 for every household. However, rising wholesale prices have since threatened to wipe out the impact of that support and Sunak and his Tory leadership rival, Liz Truss, are under pressure to announce further measures.

Cornwall Insight said rising wholesale prices and a revision of the methodology used by the regulator Ofgem to calculate the price cap were behind the increase in its forecasts.

The consultancy now expects the cap to hit £3,582 from October, an increase of £200 on its last forecast. It expects bills to begin easing next summer, to £3,810 in the third quarter and then £3,781 in the final three months of next year.

The cap, which is set quarterly by the energy industry regulator, Ofgem, was at £1,400 a year as recently as October last year.

“The government must make introducing more support over the first two quarters of 2023 a number one priority. In the longer term, a social tariff or other support mechanism to target support at the most vulnerable in society are options that we at Cornwall Insight have proposed previously. Right now, the current price cap is not working for consumers, suppliers, or the economy.”

Ofgem last week confirmed plans to upxe the price cap every three months, instead of every six months, in an effort to allow suppliers to better manage the risk from volatile wholesale prices and prevent higher prices for consumers as a result of suppliers going bust.

Lowrey said changes to the cap had led to an increase in its predictions. However, he said the move would protect suppliers struggling with costs and prevent the cost of their collapses being added to consumers’ bills.

They just go cold, and stop spending money on anything else.
How cold they go, will depend a lot on how much discretionary income they used to have.

The elderly will get really cold. Dead cold.
Unless a brain cell starts working in central government soon, this winter will be truly miserable for an awful lot of people, including me. We do not have the stretch in our budget, or savings, or be able to afford the energy price hikes, the interest rate changes (there will be more), the petrol price hikes or the food price rises. We are a single income household (partner is seriously ill but recovering), no benefits, one mortgage, and I have to travel to work in a rural community. We scrimp and save every month. We haven’t been on holiday for ten years. We don’t have the spare cash to go out regularly. My work has had a pay freeze for 12 years so I’m actually about £7k worse off than I should be if I had had cost of living pay rises year on year.
This is what Tory government always does. It screws up dealing with an economy in poor shape and there is no empathy at the top that ensure mitigations are put in place. It has happened time and again. Stop voting them in, guys. Conservative manifestos are always a con.

The problem is we won't rise up. We won't because we live on the Internet, we rattle our sabres here and in our echo Chambers. We won't because as a nation we just don't have the fight in us anymore we are lazy, we will shout and complain but we won't physically get out of our houses and march....someone else will do it for us, but that someone is thinking the same thing "someone else will do it for us" it's a cycle we as a nation have gotten ourselves into.
This is a rant, I feel at an utter loss after an hour arguing with octopus energy to lower my bill after they decided to hike another £80 onto my monthly usage. I am tired, physically and mentally.
And this is how they will win.

I have marched against BREXIT and student loans in the past.
Of course you know deep down that it's not going to change anything, but there is a sense that at least you are doing something, at least exercising the democratic rights that this (and previous 'liberal') governments want to take away.
Honestly, all of those marches that I have been on were great. A sense of collectivism and uniting behind one cause. Take your kids to learn about democracy. If we don't, it will be lost and things like this will become more normal than they already are.
On topic. I will pay my bills because I can afford it. I also think that those who can afford to pay should bear more of the burden (higher, not lower NI) as higher earners, but at the same time, wealth should be taxed too: if you're living in a big pile in the Cotswolds, why are you paying less tax than an Amazon worker in the East Midlands?
I am likely to back the Don't Pay movement either by direct action or funding them, but I totally understand and condone people not paying and I hope that they will achieve their aims. Governments have stopped listening, but they need to be held accountable and that power does not exist for their own ends, but because they were put there by the people: after all democracy, is rule by the people, for the people.

The pandemic has shown us that the majority of people will do what they are told
Putting any personal beliefs or conspiracies aside, no matter how angry people have been at the government recently, the general consensus is that most people will happily take a truncheon up the arse
Eventually though, if it finally reaches the point where most people are being evicted, starving, or getting cold, people may finally stand up for themselves
This winter will be a tough one for every single person on this island

Thats exactly why I'm so confused by both of our current PM candidates lack of prioritisation on curbing these bills.
Even if households manage to overcome these bills there is no disposable income. How is any business outside of massive corporation's meant to turn a profit?
GDP will shrink, the economy will shrink, the hospitality industry will likely get a massive falloff. As you said, its a death spiral no matter which way it goes. So why isn't it being taken seriously?

This recession is going to be as deep as the 1990s and as long as 2008. Actually, probably the worst recession in living memory as far as the relative decline in living standards is concerned. I don't know if unemployment will run that high, simply because we have a huge cohort of people in their late 50s and early 60s who are in a good position to retire early rather than be made redundant. Much like the pandemic, early retirement will eat up most of the potential job losses so there is a silver lining.
If you do manage to keep your job, you'll be in a pretty good position come 2024/25 when we finally begin to recover. But it's going to be particularly brutal. Just try and keep your head down this winter folks, best of luck.

The energy market in the UK is completely broken. A few big suppliers all charging the maximum possible with no real competition between them and a regulator that is not only failing to protect consumers, but is now fiddling with cap formula to push it even higher. Why aren't the cheaper costs associated with renewables (which make up 45% of energy generated in the UK) feeding through to consumers bills? Why are standing charges so high that even someone who sits in the dark only eating cold food will still struggle to afford their bills? It's time to admit that energy privatisation, like rail privatisation has completely failed to deliver.

Wonder how much pressure there will be to ease sanctions on Russia this winter?
Putin's regime will either watch people across Europe suffering with cold this winter with glee and/or will watch the social and political fallout from high gas prices with glee.
My guess is that after being ordered to make sacrifices for others a lot over the past few years (Covid) then being ordered to make further sacrifices by being cold and miserable will probably be the straw that breaks the camels back.

I'd rather they eased sanctions on places like Venezuela or even Iran as much as I hate the regime there. Neither of those countries are actively invading and pillaging a country like Russia is doing.

Is that even a possibility? My understanding is that Russia has such a command because the physical infrastructure there is in place such as pipelines means that it's impossible for other countries to plug the gap because there aren't enough LNG ships or LNG facilities in Venezuela or Iran to supply Europe the gas it would get otherwise from Russia.

This is the reckoning that Putin is gambling on. A few nations in Europe could change governments. Will be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully the Tories are out of power soon.

If this doesn't cause the British people to revolt then nothing ever will.

Many families will have zero disposable income which will affect hospitality, retail and domestic tourism the hardest.
We will end up like a third world country where even a basic restaurant meal is considered an unaffordable luxury for the majority of families.

The most amusing part about this is being told its just too darn expensive for the government to do anything about it. Someone cracked out a figure of £100B
This is after the government spent well in excess of that over covid in pure corruption, and handouts to their mates. There absolutely is the money to subsidise it and to enable people to not starve to death
More than that, the sole purpose of a government should be to the benefit of the people. We need a new system, because this one clearly is insane

It's obvious to say at this point but household bills are just 1 element here. Energy underpins everything, with even higher energy prices we'll get even higher inflation and almost everything else will increase.
Don't worry though BoE will increase your mortgage payments so when it comes time to choose between heating your home or being homeless you'll just cut your energy usage.

Even trying to cut back on energy use is only going to go so far. My standing rate charge has doubled since last year and that's before I even flick on a switch.
Many people are already stretched to the edge of their budgets, where are they going to magically pull an extra £200-300 from for energy every month? This is going to be an absolute disaster for the country without the government intervening.

I fully expect Russia to start making gas offers come November or December time when unrest over this is in full swing and I fully expect some governments to cave to the pressure.
Russia has been setting up this game plan for decades and yes, the EU has now learned to transition away from Russian energy, so they only get to play this card once, but they'll get a solid chunk of Ukraine by playing it.

This will basically end society as we know it. Tens of millions just don't have the money for this. Those who do won't have any money for anything else.
