More worrying than the heat, for me, is the complete lack of rain. Locally to me it rained once the day after the two days of crazy 40c temperatures and then all but nothing for the next 2 1/2 weeks with absolutely no rain on the long range forecast for this week - every day is forecast hot and sunny.
We're going to keep getting more wildfires and more crop failures until we get a sustained period of rain.

Just the state of public parks right now is shocking. I couldn't believe Hyde Park the other day (and this was a couple of weeks ago) — looked like a desert.

Living in London, I can't even remember the last significant rainfall it was somewhere beginning July. It lightly rained for like 5 min 2 weeks ago if I am remembering it correctly. It's just becoming a bit depressing.
Everything is just dead and dry, I haven't had a comfortable day in weeks. When this article says second heatwave I am sitting here asking if the first one ever really stopped? It's been nearly 30detgrees inside my apartment everyday since the beginning of July.
I really can't wait for this summer to be over sadly winter will be gone way too fast and we will be here again in 10 months.

Also in London, we had about 20min of heavy rain the night of that 40-degree day and I’m sure that’s been it since June apart from the odd couple of minutes of drizzle. The rowan tree in our back garden has already gone brown and started dropping leaves - luckily it’s not actually dead!

Sadly that rain never made it here, I saw the clouds on the rainradar and they never reached me. It never came! I remember a 10-15 minute heavy rain shower somewhere in central London at the end of June.
Most of the gardens around our apartment complex are just completely dead by the looks of it, 100% dried out.

We're in the south east. We had about 5 minutes of drizzle on the hottest day of the year and that's literally all the rain I've seen in months. We've not had a cool evening in weeks and weeks because our upstairs where our bedroom is is south facing and no matter what we do it hovers around 28c inside.
It's actually really dire and I'm sick of the "in my day we called it summer" brigade.

Well I am in my 30s and yea I am not from the UK originally I am Belgian. So let's say our climates aren't that dissimilar, I would not consider this a normal summer. A normal summer is 1-2 weeks of ok 24-30 degrees weather interchanged with 1-2 weeks of rainy cooler weather, for most of June- September

Youre spot on and tbh even 2 weeks of anything above mid 20s seems like a lot. And in my lifetime (Early 30s) rain could always be relied upon year round.
I love the warm. But the lack of rain is really a serious issue.
People saying there's no drought because they've had rain have well and truly missed the point. The whole of the uk has very low rainfall this year. Just because you've had some rain in some areas doesn't change that over the year, there's been less.

At what point does a heatwave just become the new normal?
Temps aren't gonna get colder, so when does the entire summer just consist of a constant months long heatwave?

Farmers probably aren’t that upset - oddly enough they tend to be more profitable when conditions are worse. This is because prices rise when supply is weaker but the price elasticity is more favourable to weak supplies. Of course this depends on the farmer having an outcome close to the average; if they had a poorer than average harvest they are still going to get a poor outcome.

Wrong
Fertilisers went up 300% or more
Fuels doubled and red diesel is on its way out
Supermarkets however have not adjusted their offers and so the hit is taken by the farmers and consumers. The price in the market you see is never what is reflected in the price farmers get. You see a reflection of supermarkets profits and supply chain costs outside of food production
Very often farmers get below the cost of production which is why they need subsidies
No, farmers are upset, very upset and many face total ruin

That’s not the point I’m making. It’s just a general statement about economics. All factors being equal, if for instance there’s a long spell of dry weather and the harvest is poor all over Europe, the commodity price of wheat (e.x.) will rise. Look at the price of wheat right now due to Ukraine war. This is typically more profitable overall than when everyone is doing well. This was seen in 2012 in the US, after a very good season the cost of farmland rose and more farmers started chasing good crop, which subsequently caused a fall in prices and lower profits despite good yield. There are of course input costs to consider so if labour and fuel drive lower yields then that may not make much profit.

Yes this is not normal. It’s just a sign of what is to come for the rest of the country as well.

This is what people are forgetting. I remember being taught at school that if we're not careful, droughts will happen and even people in the UK will experience water shortage. It was not taken that seriously.
I'm in the south east and an avid gardener. You can always rely on a gardener to pay attention to rainfall. We've had barely any rain in literally months. And it's alarming how many short sighted people are in these threads who just don't understand the catastrophic nature of this and the fact that we're in a canary in the mine situation. This is not a new trend. Last year was overcast but also very low rainfall. The year before that had lower than average rainfall too. 2019 had some rain. 2018 was the year that had like... 72 days without rain. It's not new and that's scary. We should be paying attention because it's becoming a trend.
Sure it rained in the North East. But. It rained less. And it will continue to happen until everyone is in the same drought conditions. As if the UK might magically not be under dry conditions when half the world currently are.
It's an arrogant and worse, ignorant subset of people who aren't getting it.

It's only more resilient not immune and a lot of it depends on what plants; soil makeup over the various layers; positioning of the plants(similar root depths mean more competition for the same water) and so on and on. Gardening like pretty much everything to do with the environment is massively complex. Often you might find a wild garden might "die" off but it recovers easier and with minimal to no need to replant

I'm in north Kent and we've had pretty much no rain in the last two months. A couple of weeks ago there was a very gentle shower that lasted a minute or two, but that's it. I can't wait for it to rain.

Water situation could get tense. In Kent we rely on aquifer for water and last winter was pretty dry, so it’s possible we will hit record lows if it’s relatively dry this winter too. (I mean it did rain but not massive amounts).
This would be a colossal problem for some of the UK’s best agricultural land. Even the hop crop could fail - no beer!

I did see warnings against BBQ’s due to the increased risk of fires. But it’ll be interesting to see how many people adhere to it

I don't think my patio is likely to set on fire, at least I hope not
I mean there will be a fire, I'm just banking on it staying within the confines of my barbecue

I work in a countryside area that is a high fire risk and we have a lot of no barbecue warnings. Definitely would prefer people to have them at home.
However many people clearly have no idea about fire safety - they come to the park with just the barbecue and their food. No plan on how they are going to put it out. Nothing to raise it off the ground, which is parched dry grass. So I presume that they also do the same at home. It's definitely much safer to have a barbecue on your patio but any time you have any sort of fire, you need to have a contingency plan for how to put it out if things go wrong!
当然希望人们在自己家里搞BBQ(而不是跑到野外去)。

We really really need rain. So many wildfires, quite a few too close for comfort. I feel most sorry for the wildlife, the water I put out has a literal wildlife queue.

This is very area dependent. I'm in the North West and we've had several days a week of rain, including in heatwave week.

The north west has been the wettest area in England but still below average, everywhere except some small areas in the far north of Scotland has had below average rainfall this summer and it's severe in most of the country
Obviously the problem is regional - it's just most regions are in the bad to worse part of the scale.

Pretty dry here in the East. We've had rain, mind you, just not nearly as much as usual. I usually have to wear wellies where I walk the dog as it is so muddy year-round, but this year the ground is bone dry and dusty. Very strange sight in Scotland!
