There are more than 1,000 US-style mega-farms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including some holding as many as a million animals, according to a new investigation.

In the US, mega-farms are defined as those that hold more than 125,000 birds reared for meat, or 82,000 egg-laying hens, 2,500 pigs, 700 dairy cows or 1,000 beef cattle. These are labelled by US officials as a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO).

By 2021, the number of farms in the UK that met the US definition of a CAFO, or mega-farm, was 1,099, according to research.

This figure is known to be an underestimate owing to the omission of Scottish data, which was unavailable because of a cyber-attack in 2020.

The march of these US-style mega-farms in the UK was revealed in a Guardian investigation in 2017, but up-to-date data has been published this week in a book, Sixty Harvests Left: How to Reach a Nature-Friendly Future, by Philip Lymbery, chief executive of Compassion in World Farming (CIWF).

In England alone, the number of mega-farms increased from 818 in 2016 to 944 in 2020. Of these, 745 house poultry and 199 are for pigs. There are four poultry farms in the UK registered for 1 million birds, with the largest holding up to 1.4 million. For pigs, the biggest three farms hold more than 20,000 pigs.

There are also at least 19 dairies that meet the criteria of a “mega-dairy”. Cows held in intensive dairies are “zero-grazed”, which means they are not allowed out into fields and are permanently housed inside sheds. The largest one in the UK appears to hold 2,000 animals.

In addition, nine mega-farms hold 1,000 or more beef cattle. US-style beef feedlots, where cattle are fattened up before slaughter, were first identified as existing in the UK in a Guardian investigation in 2018.

Industrial farming maximises production while keeping costs to a minimum to produce cheap meat and dairy – the UK slaughters 1 billion chickens, 10 million pigs and 2.6 million cattle a year – and the majority of UK farmed animals are kept in intensive units.

However, there are concerns that intensive farming is driving climate change, water and air pollution, biodiversity loss and negatively affecting local communities, including introducing potential health risks associated with ammonia pollution. Intensive livestock farming has also been blamed for increasing disease risk.

In Europe, the Dutch government recently introduced plans to radically reduce livestock numbers to curb excessive nitrogen from intensive farming.

Animal welfare activists say animals in mega-farms are denied the ability to express natural behaviours. Keeping animals in “crowded, largely barren conditions” and using fast-growing chicken breeds and farrowing crates for pigs “calls into question our claims to be a nation of animal lovers”, said Philip Lymbery, chief executive of Compassion in World Farming.

Lizzie Wilson from the National Pig Association said big does not necessarily equal bad: “Larger scale farms are often able to provide more resources, such as more stock people, a dedicated vet … that actually facilitate good animal welfare.”

The British Poultry Council’s chief executive, Richard Griffiths, said all production systems in the UK included good welfare: “Systems perceived as ‘higher welfare’ are more resource intensive with lower efficiency and productivity, with an accompanying impact on the environment and the cost of production.”

A spokesperson for the National Farmers’ unx said: “No matter what sector or size of the farm, or whether indoor or outdoor, animal health and welfare is a continued priority for all British farmers, as they know that the public hugely values the high standards of animal health and welfare that farmers work to.”

A spokesperson for the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) said the vast majority of beef and dairy cattle in the UK were “grazing outdoors throughout the year for as long as the weather conditions permit”.

As UK farming changes, there are calls for reform. The Scrap Factory Farming campaign is taking a case to the European court of human rights, alleging that the government is failing to protect the public from climate change and the threat of future pandemics from factory farming.

“Let’s stop denying that factory farming is inherently cruel and a major driver of wildlife decline and climate change,” Lymbery told the Guardian.

A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said all farms, regardless of size, had to comply with UK law on animal health and welfare, planning, veterinary medicines and environmental legislation.

“The Animal Welfare Act 2006 also makes it an offence either to cause any captive animal unnecessary suffering or to fail to provide the welfare needs of the animal – and we will not hesitate to take action against those who fail to meet these standards.”

An entire industry dedicated making innocent creatures of this earth suffer. Any wonder the Vegans are so vocal?!
N.Ireland is terrible for all this. We have no independent environment agency and a government propping up the farms. We have huge industrial factory farms for cattle and pigs.
I completely went off pork as soon as I saw one of these places. Hardly eat chicken. (Only organic eggs) and hardly any dairy.
One trip to one of these places will at minimum, make you a vegetarian almost instantly.
I don't think there's such a thing as a 'good farm' however there are farmers out there who genuinely look out for the welfare of their livestock. So it's not all doom and gloom but it's not good either.
Someday, we are going to all pay the price for this.
Just wait. An antibiotic resistance superstrain of bacteria will form eventually. One for which, there is simply no cure, because it will be resistant to every drug known to mankind.
It will be nature's way of stopping all this suffering.

It didn’t say anything about sheep alot of farms with will have over 1000 sheep when it comes to lambing are these being counted. Plus winter time cows don’t go out to graze they have sheds and an and outside penning area like in the news not in the farms interest to leave them out all winter as they don’t cope well with the cold

Shocking.I love my meat and I no an animal is killed for it.But come on at least give these animals acceptable living conditions before they goto the slaughter house.Makes me want to go vegan and I've tried it before and it failed. I hate humans sometimes we are soo fucking cruel.

The reason this exists is because people, just like yourself, create a demand for it and support it by buying these products. If we stop supporting it then it goes away.
Why wasn't veganism for you? What would stop you trying it again?

Fuck off mate, people can eat what they want.
I assume you also only buy locally made clothes, and not anything from places like Primark, Nike, Adidas etc, I assume you seen the factory where the phone you typed on was made? I assume you know the conditions of the workers on the farms that make your plants?
If your gonna bash people for eating meat because the industry that makes them is cruel, then open your fucking eyes because EVERY industry is cruel. In fact, you live in the West right? Stop living because your quality of life and nations wealth is all propped up on the economic destitution of billions of other people.
Vegans are the largest hypocrites on the planet

echoattempt
Nothing you have said is a justification for eating animals.
You think that because workers are exploited to produce clothes, we should also cause suffering to animals? Not eating animal doesn't increase the suffering of those exploited workers, it isn't an all or nothing type of deal. I am aware of the suffering caused by my existence and I reduce what I can, part of that is not supporting animal products, only buying second hand clothes, not buying new tech, reducing what I own, etc. I'm not sure what part of that makes me a hypocrite, but if you're trying to argue that there's no way to live 100% ethically then I agree, but that doesn't mean we should do nothing.
This is the classic 'no ethical consumption under capitalism, so do nothing' argument that taken to it's logical conclusion means we really shouldn't bother trying to change anything if we can't fix everything all at once. Fuck that, I'll do what I can and encourage everyone else to and fuck anyone who tries to put others down for trying to make the world a better place. It isn't a big sacrifice to slightly change my lifestyle and not buy animal products.

usernametbdsomeday
The welfare of, and experience of short, horrific lives these animals have is often so disturbing that images of the conditions and treatment get taken down from social media. I would encourage anyone with a few minutes to do some research into the practices at these. Utterly heartbreaking.

The obvious solution: Go vegan and encourage others to do the same.

little_winks
Went vegan years ago after learning about some of practices in meat and dairy farming, though have not converted anyone else in that time. Got accusations of being preachy til I gave up trying to influence others. At the point now of thinking I'm doing my bit and each to their own, though this seems a bit defeatist. Obviously wow others with my cooking, though how else can you persuade others without coming across all righteous?

jupiterLILY
That’s a tough sell for a lot of people.
We personally treat meat as a luxury, we spend maximum £20 a month on organic, high welfare meat. Some months we don’t have it at all. Personally I’ve had more luck influencing people’s meat consumption when approaching it this way.
This expectation that you should be able to cheaply eat meat for several meals a day is disgusting.
People are so detached from the lives of the creatures that they eat. I know some people that don’t want to eat chicken off the bone because it reminds them that it was an animal. That’s just so disrespectful to me.

AugustPopper
Sadly I can’t see decreases in these practices, as the U.K. population increases and inflation hits peoples wallets surely these mega farms are likely to take on a large role in farming?

harpingonNorthumberland
If only there was an alternative to the rampant consumption of animal products.
Nope. Can't see it. As you were.

AugustPopper
You think vegetarianism or veganism is the answer for to this when approximately 87% of the U.K. population consumes meat of some form regularly?
Maybe alternative diets of psuedomeats can help to some extent, but I suspect that the size of the problem makes encouraging people to change on a large scale over unrealistic.
Fact is people like eating meat, and tend to distrust manufactured products. In addition despite significant increases in the price of meat, sales have barely declined, and in the case of chicken they have actually increased.

-littlemuffet-
"Lots of people do it so that makes it okay!" "People will never change."
... yeah, alright.

AugustPopper
You have missed the point of my post, which is not that change should not occur but that the amount of change required is substantial and that price is the main factor causing change. In additional I am saying promoting alternatives only takes you so far when you need millions of people to change behaviour. The real question is would people choose cheap mega farm meat or pseudomeat? Ultimately that’s what dictates a lot of this.

anotherbozo
Can we please stop importing US-inspired practices in everything?

echoattempt
These farms exist to meet the demand of the general public, they want to be able to afford to eat lots of meat, preferably for every meal, every day of their life. This will only get worse until people stop eating meat and other animal products.

anotherbozo
I disagree. People eat a lot of meat because it is available so cheaply.
If humane practices meant the price goes up, then people either need to pay up or reduce consumption.
It needs to be regulated through policy - not the animal conditions.

echoattempt
It's only available so cheaply because it is heavily subsidised, we are all already paying for it through taxes. If meat cost it's true value, even the cheapest, most inhumanely sourced meat would be too expensive for most people.
Why would farmers use their profit to improve the welfare of animals when there is no demand from customers for it? Factory farmed meat isn't being boycotted, caged eggs continue to be bought, there isn't a demand for improved conditions. The market wants cheap meat, so things like mega-farms are the only way to meet this demand.

anotherbozo
I'm talking about regulations - not free market pricing. Subsidies are irrelevant here because these US style practices are aimed at making it more cheaper.
The consumers obviously want cheap everything - but sometimes regulations means complying with laws that make the end product not as cheap as it can be.
It's not a new concept. We can import a lot cheaper food if we relax the import quality requirements. But we don't do that because we don't want poor practices in our food. I don't see any reason why this cannot be introduced to meat.

RunningDude90
Broiler farms are insanely packed here in the UK, and it appears supermarkets are the ones pushing for quality of life, rather than government.
UK farms have a long way to go compared to what Jumbo are mandating of their chicken suppliers on the continent (significantly longer life meaning much slower growth breeds and reduction in how much they’re fed), but I can’t say that life is particularly joyous either.

The supermarkets all want to have their cake and eat it, though. They'll tell farms to lower prices while telling them to increase their standards and hence production costs. I'm not sure this is particularly worthy of credit. Sure we all want both of those things but they're not massively compatible asks.

I'm more concerned about the chemicals they pump into the animals.
I honestly don't care about the conditions they're kept in. They're being bred for consumption until there are plant based alternatives. I feel that it would be a bit hypocritical of me to start crying about them being locked in cages.
