My cousin married an American girl two years ago. He’s a liberal European guy, she’s a conservative Christian girl from a pro-Trump republican family. I was expecting him to report back to me about the terrible ‘culture shock’ he’d experienced… I was surprised to hear him say, he felt nothing of the sort. His in-laws had embraced him with open arms, lovingly and without any judgement. They had some fierce debates, political debates, religious debates. But nothing too vicious or mean-spirited. In the end, they’d always “kiss and make up”, hug it out, laugh it off…
He’s a solid guy, and she’s a great girl. She’s not an uncivilised barbarian and neither is my cousin. They’re just two young people, who have different opinions and whose families are on different places of the political spectrum. Whatever disagreements they have, are easily solved over a beer and barbeque. They now have a little girl of their own, an absolute darling. The only time things got a little tense was when my uncle, my cousin’s dad, and the girl’s father had some political argument — my uncle is a lot more left-leaning than his son, and… rather exceptionally outspoken. This got him labeled a socialist. He didn’t deny being one. Then in comes cousin dearest with some jokes to defuse the situation.

The worst Americans I’ve seen are a few folks I have on social media. Some Republicans, some Democrats. They come across very aggressive, combative, sometimes downright vicious. It’s quite a sharp contrast between them and the very cordial and kind in-laws of my cousin. They all came over for their ‘second wedding’ in our country, which was a lovely event. Many of their relatives and friends from the States came over, too. And nothing happened. No conflict. No bad arguments. No accusations. Just… people, getting along. Families, blending together. Some people just watch too much CNN and Fox News and develop this paranoid, negative view of the world. I find that reality is a lot less bleak.
My cousin and his wife are quite private about their views — she never posts about it on social media, and neither does he. It’s just pictures of their kid and their dog, family gatherings. Harmless stuff. They know when to speak up and when not to. Just like civilised people anywhere, really.

The people you describe sound much like my own family. We do not allow politics to get in the way of our family relationships. Everyone is much happier that way.

There are many politically charged people in the USA, but the majority are not this way. At least not the people I know. You'll find this can vary depending on where you're at though. I'm in Texas and even if we disagree with you we are typically still going to show you our Southern hospitality.
Please do remember that if someone says “Well bless your heart.”, it's a polite way of saying we think you're an idiot though.

I had a person for whom friend is probably the best term, once, who was, in his world view, fairly antithetical to mine.
The funny thing was, we agreed about almost everything we discussed. The only thing that we actually disagreed about, other than a handful of elements relating to religion, was how to implement the solutions. My implementation strategies were based around consensus, education and support. His were more based around force, violence and imposition.

I understand his world view, though. The chap was from a very violent country in the lower reaches of the African Continent. When I analysed his views, they were based around creating a stable, safe environment for people to live in. Our goals were extremely similar, our views were broadly identical. But his preferred method of achieving the goal was the jackboot, not the mortarboard.
I personally think that people should be willing to actually talk to people they disagree with, and actually find out what they believe. They may well be pleasantly surprised by how similar they actually are, and how similar their desires are.

99% of American’s are classically liberal. You do you and let me do me. We’re a melting pot, none of the same, and all of us wonderful and different with our own points of view and beliefs.
The real 1% that’s a problem for this country are the extremes left AND right who are so vocal that they make the world think we’re all trying to make everyone else be Progressive or Conservative.

When you are not exposed to political opinions from social media anymore, you become much less jaded at the world, and find real people actually very reasonable, even those who have vastly different opinions than you. I am glad i unfollowed everything on fb though i can't get off it yet.

You want a frank answer?
For an Eastern European, Americans roughly fall into two categories: civilized hypocrites, or more frank and straightforward less-civilized folks. Of course, this is a gross simplification.
Civilized hypocritesThis is a typical liberal-minded American you will find in a big, blue city. I interacted a lot with these people.
This person is quite educated, and pretty much well-behaved. He is polite, smiling, and, usually quite hypocrite by Eastern European standards.
This person will never have a frank conversation with you about any personal issues - yours or his. He will report you if you said or did something inappropriate, and smile to you the next day. If you have him as a co-worker, he will easily and comfortable back-stab you, no problem. If you have such a person as a manager, he will be smiling and telling you how great you are doing for the whole year - all the way until the performance review, when he will say “I’m sorry, you have underperformed for this year” with his kind smile.

Hypocrisy of some of these people can reach an ultimate height when they themselves will try to think nice. Not try to be honest to themselves - but do all their best to think right in in almost Orwellian fashion. You have.. egh… protesters burning your city? Yeah, because they are crimi.. OMG, no, because they were oppressed! We have our school education going down to the sink? Yeah, we need to spend less money on bullshit and concentrate on teach… Oh no, our schools are great, we just need more money to spend on renovating that cafeteria and hire a sport coach - our kids deserve the best!
Again, after some interaction with such a person you notice he/she not just trying to say things right - but to think right. And if facts contradict this nice, politically correct and socially acceptable point of view - too bad for the facts. Such a person will tell you “Oh, Alex! How you can say these things! Oh!”, smile and quickly move to a more neutral topic.

Honest, a-bit-less-civilized folks
These are mostly working class people. Very often these are rural folks, with whom I usually interact during my fishing or hunting trips. Compared to #1, they may seem less civilized because of their simpler manners and simpler life. Although you shortly discover they they are usually surprisingly knowledgeable, and you definitely can’t call them “stupid”.
They may not look great, and they may not say nice things. But they are way more frank. They have their own set of ideas that are very foreign to me - being highly religious, reject the idea of universal medical care, severely restricting abortions, and so on. I do not consider these ideas to be a sign of being civilized/uncivilized - that can be a different view at life; our opinions regarding other issues such as personal freedoms, self-resilience, or gun control, align quite well.
But as long as you behave with respect towards these people, they usually will be respectful towards you. And, most importantly, they tend to enforce their personal views on me far less than liberal people.

If you ask me, I feel way more comfortable with category #2. May be because I do not live among these people? Or may be because despite all our differences, their mentality is way closer to my Eastern European background? These people may be rude with you, but at least they are honest and not back-stabbing.
Sorry if my answer makes you upset.

I do at least and i am a european. There are many contradictions in USA and hypocrisy is widely spread. If we start with the uncivilized part well many parts of the US despice education. In many american highschools the intelligent kids are bullied and called nerds and bookworms. This is very uncommon in sweden in high school for example.
If you see an american for example order a large great steak like for example a Kobe-steak, the first thing he/she does is pouring enormous amounts of ketchup on it, destroying it´s flavours and ingrediences by making everything taste like ketchup… Also it is not uncommon that they drink wine out of plastic cups, this is another thing that only alchoholic europeans use to do.
There are many things that i can bring up here so now i will start on the hypocrisy side: US is very adament to point out that they are a “Christian nation under God.”But what does Christianity have to do with war, rape, plunder and greed? Nothing. Yet these things have been practiced by the US for several decades.

Also the whole hysterical sex thing is rather weird. With that i mean two things of the totally opposite sides. One side hates the idea of sex before marriage and one side wants everything to be about sex. For example US is the largest porn-producer in the world by a large margin.
The side i mention first have ceremonies like for example “The abstinence ring-ceremony” Where fathers take their daughters and make them promise to be completely abstinent before marriage which well… Is so weird and creepy in so many ways…
The other side however wants to teach small children about gay-sex and promotes complete tolerance for sexual immorality and the one night-stand-culture. Also the biggest promotor of sexual immorality is not the porn industry but hollywood in itself. By promoting everything from same sex-relationships to directly enforcing pedophilia like for example the Netflix-series cuties that is used in an attempt to normalize pedophilia.

Also the US says that they want to fight terrorism with everything they got and destroy all IS, Al Qauida´s etc of the world. Still they support the largest supporters of terrorism by large namely Saudi Arabia which have sponsred several terrorist groups and well it is not a coincindence that Usama Bin Ladin was from there…
Also let´s not forget their relationship with Israel. A nation that is said to be one unified nation under God supporting a nation which citizens often vehemently hates Christ.

When we are on the subject of religion US is supposed to be a culturally christian nation but not a nation where religion should have an impact on the administration on government or public affairs. But guess what, they do, big time!
In 2001–2002 the respected news paper Boston Globe investigated the catholic church and found out that their power is so large in the US that they were able to make obligatory documents regarding court cases disappear from the court records.
The US also promotes the idea of The self made man. The self made man is a person that paves his own way and become succesful without any priviliges. However in the US today it is extremely hard to become rich without either rich parents or good education and good education often is expensive because it is really to difficult get a scholarship in the US which in it´s turn makes it harder for poor people to ever get out of it´s poverty. 65% of poor people in the US dies poor which is another indicator that the self made-man idea is rather false.

Their prison-system is also rather weird. A lot of people are for example sentenced to life without parole which is according to me the worst sentence of them all. If you shoot a person to death when you were 23 and now are there when you are 60, is it reasonable if you have changed and become another person and mature which most people do? Not so i believe…
Last but not least their treatment of black people is really hypocritical. A christian nation under God that did not only thought it was okay to keep black people as slaves but still to this day discriminates against black people and the police kills the black people and use excessive violence and yes often gets away with it. Of course there exist good things with the US too. But there are many flaws that makes it hard for a decent human being to like that country.

If you actually monitor Americans at restaurants to determine what they order and observe how much condiments they use and use that as a reason to denigrate them, you have an unnatural obsession with them. Doubtful any Americans would feel the need to scrutinize you and your country to that level. However in your intense scrutiny of Americans you probably overlook some of your own country's flaws.

Well if you don´t like my answer then maybe this topic is not for you. Me critizising the US does not mean that i think everythink is hunkadory in my own country…
