We caught a few of these that we sent to the galley for the chef to prepare for us at our usually one lobster-fest per 12 day leg in lobster territory. After excellent preparation of the whole lobsters by the chef we used every available tool to crack through the toughest shell on an animal that I have ever experienced. The deep-sea American lobster is clearly the toughest animal out there. By that size there is no ocean predator (other than us humans) that can make an easy dent in their shell! We broke all traditional lobster eating tools in the galley and had to resort to hammers from the engineer’s tool box to crack their shells.

I don’t believe any animal could take down a bull sperm whale in a one-on-one combat situation. Given a big enough gun, a human might be able to kill him, but whales don’t go down easy and the whale could probably kill the person before succumbing to his wounds.

On land the winner is certainly an African Bush elephant. No other animal even approaches it’s size, and bush elephants are tough, aggressive animals. Even a Siberian tiger or polar bear would be forced to bow to the tusker’s superior size and strength, and a person without the ability to use ranged weapons would be very lucky to bring down an elephant.
