I cannot believe I’m actually going to answer this question. At the time Obama was first elected, I was a Texas Republican. I couldn’t stand Barack Obama — I would turn off the radio or TV whenever he was on. I didn’t even want to hear his voice.
But I feel very different about him now. I have nothing but the highest respect for the man for what he has so graciously and professionally endured throughout his term. The Republicans should be completely ashamed for the way they’ve treated a sitting President. (I left the GOP shortly after Obama won when I saw the racists in the party come out loud and proud.)

Obama has made some terrible mistakes, but so did Bush. And Obama’s mistakes didn’t get nearly so many people killed. I believe now that Obama has been a good president. I am terrified that he might sign us up for the TPP and I hope Bernie will be able to stop it in time.
What do I like about Obama?
His drive to try to close Gitmo.
His drive to get everyone insured (though I hate his approach).
His drive to normalize US relations with other nations (though I hate that he appointed Clinton to be Secretary of State. I’m glad John Kerry is there now.)
His calm and intelligent approach to immigration reform.
His calm and intelligent approach to climate change.
I also like that he admitted in his book that accepting money from campaign super PACs changed his politics. Hillary denies that, as if she thinks we’re all morons.

Definitely nice to hear an ex-Republican give President Obama an obxtive appraisal. When some Republicans call him the most radical president in US history I just don't know what planet they're living on.

Ron Wiseman
Well, believe it or not, I’m also giving Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders obxtive appraisals. I didn’t come to my conclusions about Clinton or Sanders based on untruths. Clinton deserves my disdain. Sanders deserves my praise.

I like the way you phrased your list, “His drive to…”, “His approach…” Success and failure are contingent upon so many factors and scales that faulting him or praising him for those is less productive than simply admitting that he at least tried.

James Barton
You might enjoy this then. You hate his approach to health care? Well-kept secret:It’s not HIS approach. In fact it is the GOP’s approach.
Obamacare was proposed by the Heritage Foundation (conservative think tank) years ago, and it has been pushed forward primarily by conservatives over and over. Of course it was put into place in Massachusetts by a conservative (Romney), and written into federal law by a Democrat and Republican. The thing Obama himself didn’t like was the Individual Mandate but he accepted it. Shortly thereafter the Republicans made Obamacare their primary target with a claim of government overreach and spending, socialism, and a justification of their hatred for Obama. They also chose the Individual Mandate as the most vulnerable aspect of Obamacare - the initiative that they pushed for.

I think that if Obama had had his druthers, he’d have gone for a Single Payer type solution, that being the least convoluted option from a legal point of view (and remember he is a law professor).

Obama was the first Democrat that I ever voted for as I thought the country was going in the wrong direction and McCain offered no good alternative. Having your job outsourced and training your replacements will do that to you. I will be always be grateful for his stimulus program that helped people like me with extended unemployment benefits and help with medical insurance. First thing Republicans killed when they retook congress. Obamacare saved my life when I had life threatening heart surgery and I wouldn’t have had health surgery otherwise. My only complaint is that he has badly mishandled the middle east and isis. On the whole one of the better presidents of my lifetime.

Matthias Wolde
I am very glad your health has improved. I want to mention that the Middle East minimal intervention is the best approach. They don't think like you and me, they are extremely dogmatic never want to entertain a different idea or approach. Islam is the most difficult religion to deal with. For a lot of them Islam or death is their belief. The best approach is to assist moderate Muslims from the side line. Let them figure it out for themselves. Our soldiers don't need to die for a useless cause. Some Muslims understand the problem within their religion better now than before. Before they blamed the West for every problem they have. Isis fighters didn't come from the sky, they are Muslims who came from different Muslim communities around the glob. I am glad he hasn't sent our soldiers their to die and bleed to that horrible place called the Middle East. Until they get out of Islam or death mentality they will never stop fighting each other.

I voted for the guy twice. He seems like a genuine human being. I enjoy watching utube videos of him leaving his office and walking around DC shaking tourists hands or walking to a restaurant and greeting the locals there. People have short term memories. When Obama took office he inherited a dismal economy and has improved it dramatically. I never thought that Cuba would be open to America again but here we are.

Kimberly Masterson
I never thought I’d see anyone admit they hated Obama and then, through watching him and forming their own opinion, decided they liked him. No president gets it all right. Obama has changed world opinion of the US. Not that I care to please everyone, but the rest of the world mostly loves Obama, and we have to live with the rest of the world. Bush, Jr. destroyed all goodwill towards the US after 9.11. Obama brings integrity. Whatever his past is, it is in the past.

Dave Regise
Who could believe that after the Americans elected Bush twice they responded well enough to elect Obama.

So you aren't concerned with him more than doubling the national debt, with expanding the powers of the government, with deepening dependence on entitlements, with presiding over punitive treatment of Constitution-driven Conservative and Libertarian groups, and with co-opting healthcare and education?
If you abandoned those principles, I suspect you were never a classical Republican.

Eric Erickson
If you take America in 2000 and look at it in 2008, you'd have to call George W. Bush one of the worst Presidents in American history. I'd argue that he was worse than Buchanan or Hoover because they proved incapable of handling crisis handed to them. Bush's wounds were entirely self-inflicted.
Now take the 2008 to 2016 approach, and you will see a nation far better off. We are no longer at war in 2 countries with no end in sight. Osama bin Laden is dead and buried. Unemployment has fallen to 5%, the threshold for full employment. We've had steady grown for 6 1/2 years, pulling out from the Bush freefall. Gas is at $2 a gallon, well below Romney's promise of $3 gas. Inflation is negligible. The US deficits continue to shrink from the disastrous recessionary levels. The outlook for 2016 looks like more of the same, with unemployment continuing to fall into tight market levels. GDP Growth to Improve Despite Strong Dollar's Drag.

Obama's main achievement, ACA, has reduced the ranks of the uninsured to historic levels. Medical inflation has abated from far below the levels seen under Bush.
Gay marriage is now the law of the land with full Federal recognition. Support for gay marriage tops 61%, making it a near consensus for most Americans.
Are things perfect? Absolutely not. We are still failing to address climate change, gun violence is horrific, racism is rampant, college education is becoming a luxury item, income inequality is at Gilded Age levels, etc. That said, I don't see a Republican proposal that would do anything but make these far worse.

Obama will go down in history remembered as one of the best Presidents of our time.
The fact that it took him 4 years to dig us out of the hole GW dug, just to get back to ZERO, with the Republicans trying to jab him at every turn and incredulously pin GW's mistakes onto Obama's administration.
The only real mistake Obama made, which was well intended was in the beginning trying to appease the Republicans with the whole "Hand across the aisle " campaign which Republicans took as a sign of weakness and naive.
He only wasted time trying to appease a group of people that never wanted ANYTHING except for him to fail.
He has been a reasonable, eloquent, discerning president we should be proud of.
He didn't create scandals, didn't have a mistress, good family values, took every challenge headon at on his terms.
We were and are lucky to have had him.
Between GW and ANY of the existing candidates he will stand tall.
Even Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Ronald Reagan didn't accomplish as much.

"If you take America in 2000 and look at it in 2008, you'd have to call George W. Bush one of the worst Presidents in American history."
If you look at the condition of America 2001 vs 2007, Bush looks far better. Such analyses are fatally flawed in that they assume everything that happens is the President's fault or achievement. By that reasoning, FDR caused WW2 and George HW Bush brought down the Soviet unx. That fatal flaw causes those erratic conclusions.

Your comment is fascinating. You start with a conclusion - that Bush was better, and cite something strange to support it. Most would say America when Busy took over the presidency in 2001 was in far better shape than when he handed over the office to Obama in 2007, so your supporting statement does not support your conclusion. And then you follow it up with a total non-sequitur about the limits of power. Nonetheless, I suspect the quality of your logic is enough for others to see why you made the choice you did.

Is this a question, or a tribute?
Please climb down off your political soap box and find a more appropriate venue to praise the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
While you are certainly entitled to your biased opinions, I'm NOT sure what this thread is attempting to accomplish, besides create an echo chamber of people who agree with your position.

No matter what you want to believe, numbers don't lie. We have a stronger market and unemployment is cut in half. Besides he hasn't lied to us to get us into a war or create a Patriot Act because he broke the law.

Michael E. Schmidlen
I don't care to refute your comments because there is adequate info available to anyone who can operate a search engine, that isn't skewed, and that accurately reflects the true "health" of our economy and the record low participation in the workforce.
If you truly believe the gov't unemployment numbers, I have some real estate I'd like to sell to you...
Not sure how he deserves credit for the stronger market, but then I'm not a sycophant...
