What animal has the lowest preference for mercy?

This is called the shrike.
Cute, isn’t it?
Believe me, the shrike is the Jack the Ripper of the bird world. It kills its prey in the most spine-chilling and gruesome way possible.
They impale their prey on a sharp obxt like a thorn or a barbed wire. This makes it easier for them to devour their victims bit by bit.
They have also been observed to hunt relatively large vertebrates like mice and lizards.
On larger vertebrates, they induce paralysis by a bite to the neck and vigorously shake their immobilized victim so as to snap the vertebrae of the victim prior to impaling it on a thorn.
They don’t always impale their victims to eat them. It’s also used as a method of food storage. They can leave a mouse impaled for days before they come and make a snack out of it.
The shrike, also known as the butcherbird, is the ultimate embodiment of mercilessness.
Now imagine this: what if the shrike were the size of an ostrich and it could somehow fly.
There would be human kebabs everywhere.

All animals that hunted humans are extinct or are now leery of coming anywhere near us. We are psychotic, vindictive critters. Kill a few of us, especially our children, we’ll harass you at every opportunity. We’ll find your burrow, kill your cubs, and set it on fire.
Edit: Have you seen the news about a guy who weighs 140 pounds, strangling a mountain lion, admittedly a small one, with no weapons? It had his arm in its mouth and would not let go, he finally got his foot on its throat and choked it to death.

We were the hunted, but became the hunters and we brought down the wrath of hell upon them and turned them to their extinction or evolution.

The most vicious vengence of all is how we dealt with the wolves, or rather, are dealing with them. We caught their cubs, (in)bred them through generations to weak, infirm, ridicolous, harmless freaks that we parade around in slave-ropes or even handbags. Just wiping them out wasn’t enough. Utter humiliation was needed.

Joe Blow
The wolf was gradually tamed in ancient times due to them going near human settlements to gather our food scraps. The wolfs that were less afraid of and more friendly towards people did better than the more scared aggressive wolves due to the food from their relation ship with us.
As the wolves became more tame they started to provide us with benefits such as protection and help hunting. Eventually we started to breed the wolves/dogs for desired traits.
We did not kidnap wolf pups to “enslave and humiliate” them our relationship with dogs today is based of evolution.

You are probably the most fun person to be around at parties. Too bad I live in Norway and can't experience the comedic and entertainment thrill it must be.

I agree with him. The whole inbreeding to create handicapped monstrosities thing only happened in the past 100 to 200 years. Well, except for China breeding those short-legged dogs to fit in the sleeves of members of the imperial court.

So, human is the real animal with lowest mercy.

“Now imagine this: what if the shrike was the size of an ostrich and it could somehow fly.”
There have been dedicated human-hunting animals before, and most of them were either wiped out or brought close to extinction.

Garrett
Yes, people always speak of animals that hunted humans as if no animal has tried it before.
The animals who have, died. Or learned better.

Robert Sproull
Dude, I remember seeing a shrike kill a house finch in my neighbors tree when I was 13. The poor finch made the most awful squealing noises before stopping suddenly, I assume when it had its neck snapped.
I'm 22 now and it's still one of the most brutal things I've ever witnessed in nature.

Paolo Cuzzato
Mercy - ot lack thereof - is not the point here. The bird impales its preys because it is unable to tear them apart with its small beak and talons, unlike, say, a hawk. It must wait for the prey to tenderize spontaneously. It is worth noting that this is exactly what humans do, too!

This son of a fuckCassowaries are badass.
This right here is 7 feet of pure, unadulterated assholery. A cassowary can run at speeds up to 50 km/h and will freaking bulldoze anything that gets in its way. Happily. See that dinosaur helmet she’s got going? That thing will mess you up. Also, she can jump high enough to kick you right in the tit.
Oh, and she has a 13 cm claw on each foot. Did you hear that? 13 cm. 5 inches. Go measure that. I’ll wait.
Yeah. YEAH, DID YOU SEE THE LENGTH OF THAT THING? That thing can take off limbs. It can disembowel a grown human. It can do these things, and it will. Happily.
It even swims. IT SWIMS. Okay? Yeah, that’s right. Like you needed another reason not to go in the water. Nobody wants to swim with a leaping dinosaursharkbird.
It has been named the deadliest bird in the world and has the aggression of a PMSing dragon.
If confronted by a cassowary, you need to stand tall, look it in the eye, hold your ground, and die like a little bitch.

Excerpt taken from Wiki:
As for eating the cassowary, it is supposed to be quite tough. Australian administrative officers stationed in New Guinea were advised that it "should be cooked with a stone in the pot: when the stone is ready to eat so is the Cassow
ary".

Are you familiar with the reptilian brain?
No? Well let me aquaint you. The reptilian brain understands only four commands: Fight, Flight, Feed and Fu… make love.
The observant person will notice that mercy did not figure in the reptilian brain.
Does that crocodile care that it is killing a small impala? Does it care a mother could be grieving or a baby is snatched to death before its time?
No. Reptiles don’t care for niceties like that.
They have no mercy. They’re not built for mercy. They’re unable to conceive of mercy and you know what? They have lived for hundreds of millions of years longer than primates. Go figure.

Nicolás Miari
Yet, this primate could easily drive them to extinction if we really set ourselves to do so.
Now WHO’s boss?

Erik Stevenson
What's admirable about crocodilians is that despite them being actively hunted for most of human history, and humans encroaching on their land as much as any other animal, they continue to thrive despite it all.
They really are a remarkable species. They may yet outlive us lol.

Red Baron
This is not true. Crocodile and Alligator species all over the world have been driven to extinction or endangerment because of habitat loss and poaching. For instance, the Siamese Crocodile has roughly 150 adults still alive in the wild. Philippine Crocodile had less than 100. Just because they are thriving in florida doesn’t mean it’s the same elsewhere.

Emilios Aristidis
Yes and no. Crcodiles have been known to prey on human beings. Wild animals tend to avoid human beings in general but a few seem to enjoy the idea of hunting human beings. Its very hard to drive crocodiles into extinction just by our selves and its even harder for them to kill us to extinction. But the fact remains that Crocodiles survived the dinosaurs and one massive extinction, so by probabilities and history, crocodiles can easily outlive human beings. The fact that modern crocodiles survived for tens of milions of years with minor changes through their evolution and human beings only came to existence at best 200k years ago on continually living the verge of oblitareting each other, shows that crocodiles will outlive us.

AngryApe - DEACTIVATED
You’re kidding yourself if you think it would be difficult to drive crocodilians to extinction.
If you set our human militaries to the task of driving crocodiles extinct, they could do it without losing a single soldier, just by having the helicopters do the work.
There are still currently multiple species of crocodilian that we have sent to the verge of extinction practically accidentally as a natural consequence of our own normal behaviors, things like land clearance and agriculture: Endangered Crocodilians
The reason why the others aren’t extinct yet, is because we don’t want them to be.

Kumar Kishore
Ofcourse . As far as destructive tendencies and cruelties are concerned humans have no parallel. We have already destroyed the environment without even caring for future generations. Atleast the reptile does what it does due to hunger and its biology and can be considered much merciful than most humans.

Wasu Koysiripong
It's very hard to drive crocodiles into extinction just by ourselves because we now have mercy towards other animals, after driving countless mega fauna into extinction. Some of us, e.g. animal rights groups, will try their best to prevent us from doing that.

Nature is the boss. Can’t you see how people are dying due to Covid 19? We can’t control the spreading of a small virus, still you are in doubt, who is the Boss?

Tyler Wellman
In the grand scheme of things, Covid has barely left a dent in the overall human population. It did cause enough panic to jumpstart research on a vaccine and soon it will either be eradicated or no worse than an annual flu shot. Still going with humans as the boss on this one.

We are the masters of this world. You can use that power for good or for evil. But you cannot deny that fact.

Steven Thompson
Are we really the masters of this world? Yes we have dominion over our less intelligent earthly coinhabitants. However natural disasters have the potential to cause destruction on a scale that can bring our fragile society crumbling to dust. Even the smallest cosmic events could cause extinction of all life on earth. We are far from the masters of this earth. It is our own hubris and pride that will lead to our destruction.

Thanks. It reminded me of this:
“I realized some time ago that I’m not separate from nature just because I have a primate brain - an upper brain - because underneath the primate brain, there’s a mammalian brain, and beneath the mammalian brain, there’s a reptilian brain; and it’s those two lower brains that made the upper brain possible in the first place. Here’s the way it works: The primate brain says, “Give peace a chance.” The mammalian brain says, “Give peace a chance, but first let’s kill this motherf***er.” And the reptilian brain says, “Let’s just kill the motherf***er, go to the peace rally and get laid.”George Carlin

No predators/carnivores in the animal kingdom understand the concept of mercy, be they mammals, reptiles, birds or fish. There are videos of wolves, hyenas and lions eating animals alive. Just like the crocs they don't exactly care if someone will be sad for that. Humans alone understand mercy because they are the ones who conceived it as the only free willed beings in this world.

Xanthi Francis
Whether they conceive of it as mercy or not, when they practice it, the outcome is the same for the one that is shown it.
Whales are intelligent, sentient beings, who have helped save seals from other whales for no obvious reason except altruism.

There are lots of assumptions in what you wrote. Free will is just the ability to think in abstract instead of as programmed. Higher mammals including our next of kin chimps, gorillas… show degrees of abstract thinking, so do many marine mammals.
Even in lesser mammals there are recorded instances of abstraction. Like the following story in which the lioness felt depressed after recognizing she had killed a pregnant antelope.

They have outlived primates by hundreds of millions of years.
This is called present-bias. Just because we are younger does not make them superior. Us being a more-recent model than them does not imply that they are superior to us in any way, for the same reason why wheelbarrows, which have been around a lot longer than Ferraris, are not necessarily superior to Ferraris.

Aniket Kanse
Humans are first and worst in this list. Even after knowing and understanding what mercy is, humans kill and breed to kill lots of animals.
