Soaring prices for food and drink were the biggest driver behind the latest cost of living increase, with an annual rise of almost 15%, the fastest annual jump since April 1980, as the price of bread and cereals, meat, milk, cheese and eggs shot up.

The Resolution Foundation said such a switch would have stark consequences for families struggling with soaring living costs. A single disabled adult on universal credit would lose £380, while a working single parent with one child would lose £478, and a working couple with three children would lose £978.

The ONS said electricity prices rose by 54% and gas prices by 95.7% in the year to September. As with most things, it's only really true for someone who fits the "typical" profile
Eg if you're on a 10 year fixed rate mortgage and 2 year fixed rate electricity that you signed up to in November 2021, your personal inflation rate is going to be much lower than average
Energy and food are up a ~50% and ~30% respectively, so if you spend a disproportionately high proportion of your income on those then your inflation rate is much higher. If you spend relatively less on those and more on other things, your personal inflation rate is much lower
The biggest problem, I think, with the inflation we're seeing right now is that energy and food are a huge part of poorer people's budgets. Meaning that the worse off you are, the harder you're being hit right now
Although interest rate rises are about to clobber the ever living shit out of the middle classes, and are going to be brutal for household budgets
Of course, both are relative - £100/mo more on food for someone who doesn't have £100 spare is just as impossible as £600/mo more on the mortgage for someone who doesn't have £600

I'm dumb to this but what exactly is “inflation of 10%“, I just excepted inflation throughout my adult life, but this past 2 years has been insane.
Nothing is 10% more than what it used to be, some stuff is 50-300% more than what it was 2 years ago.

I got a pay rise. I just about make my ends meet. I'm quite lucky to live in a houseshare where we are all trying to cut back on our bills. For reference, I work with children that have neuro-disabilities and special needs.
I can't relocate to be closer to work as it would take more from my salary. I have to wait until next year to see what the market looks like. I can't get my driver's license as prices for lessons are increasing with full costs.
Soon I'll be spending more on travel and food. I have dental work as well and am currently trying to find a new good dentist that won't charge me £85 for a basic hygiene appointment.
The pay rise I got will soon become a pay cut. I know my rent will go up, I know my bills will go up.
I was ecstatic to see the bills frozen for 2 years as it would buy me time to sort out a budget. But I don't know how I can budget with everything constantly changing. I've been told to get a side hustle by others but fun fact folks: that market is not only incredibly competitive, but also predatory to those who are desperate for more money. Even the stock market now is too risky for investment.

10% on everything, but meanwhile, in the real world, prices have gone up between 20-30% on the stuff we buy all the time (and naive to think they'll ever go down).
I had a debate on Reddit some time ago with someone saying that this was all OK and has to be allowed to happen because people have too much money. Well, I admit they didn't say exactly those words, but that's what I took from it - that somehow getting a pay rise sufficient to being able to continue to afford to feed your family was an example of largesse that we should eschew in the name of "getting inflation down" - I mean, it's really working, in it. Wages have been stagnant for a fucking decade and here we are with inflation at levels not seen in three decades.
What a world we live in, where we must content ourselves with becoming poorer, having fewer nice things and having harder lives, and where others in our midst are not only utterly fine with it, but are advocating for it.

UK is nothing more than a wallet for the rich, they get given money, tax breaks, and ship their money to off shore bank accounts, and to make up for the stolen money and crashing economy caused by them, all paid for with public service cuts, real term pay cuts, and people having to work 2-3 jobs whilst still being poor. This country is sick! but people will still vote tory because the media tells them to

My company gave all employees a 3.5% raise in April and are giving another 3.5% rise this month, along with a £500 well-being payment to help with bills. I also received an additional 3k raise last month for being good at my job which was nice.
Still feel the pinch though. Are these inflation numbers from the new calculation method? The old one would have had it about a 30% more than that.

Yeah it must skew it really badly, because a lot of these products still seem to be getting slightly cheaper, especially TVs. Maybe that’ll change soon, I noticed, for example the new iPad (the entry level bog-standard one) has gone from being around £300 to £500. Maybe it’s a test to see if they can get away with it? I also suppose with Apple products they’re supported software-wise so long that people are keeping them longer, so pump up the prices…

About a year ago I still had disposable income. I don't seem to have any now. I pay the bills, and get our groceries and can maybe partake in a couple of very modest social activities a month and that's it. Energy bill increase, childcare increases, food unquestionably increased a massive amount, etc.
I am extremely fortunate in that I only need to go into the office a day a week, and we managed to fix our mortgage at decent rates before they went nuts. If it wasn't for that, we'd be in financial difficulty now.

I've noticed quite a few things which were £1 now being £1.15 or so, and things which were £1.50 being around £1.60 or £1.70
The largest, percentage wise, increase I've seen is in Tescos own brand diet lemonade, which went from 17p for 2 litres to 23p (which is a 35% increase)

Used to spend £50-60 a week. Now it's typically £80 every 5 days or so. No real changes to diet; if anything we eat less fancy meat, so less lamb and less beef.

Why is the UK hit by the energy crisis like the continent? I understand that EU's energy policy sets prices across the whole unx, so even though we here in Sweden are self-sufficient we are forced to pay the price the EU sets, but the UK left the EU, did the UK rely on Russian gas that much or what's the reason for the same inflation that the continent is experiencing?

Most of our gas comes from Norway, followed in second place by USA. Russia was never a big supplier of gas to UK.
The prices are rising because other countries that were reliant on Russian gas, such as Germany, are now bidding for that same Norwegian and American gas supply as we are. Same supply but more demand equals higher prices for everyone.

I have started downgrading my purchases. I see meat is up a lot so I choose more veggie stuff. Brands are up so I buy unbranded.
I'm in a position to do this and keep my food bill about the same. Fuck knows what you do when you're already buying the cheapest food possible and you cannot afford anything else.

most of the costs of UK food goes to labor. However, wages have not gone up as much as the inflation in food prices. This means that profit is being made along the lone by food producers and supermarkets.

Look at that, we all get poorer.
When your children are going cold and hungry this winter, what are you going to do?
We know who's to blame.

Sadly, you Brits have been trained not to strike, and its reenfoced in a lot of media.
The Brits are famed for queuing and doing what they are told. Protesting will be reported as "Un-British" in a lot of the print media if it starts to seriously take hold.
Its why they attempted to smear the unxs and their talks of general strikes recently

Funny that the British people just don’t really seem to. I know we had riots in Bristol and other places not so long ago but they never seem on par with France or America.

Tipping over a bin here gets you labelled as some sort of terrorist rather than a striker and a lot of people eat it up, telling you to be peaceful and not be destructive.
But we have tories in office. They don't care what we say. They don't have morals or shame. They listen to nothing. And while we wait, they legalize anti-protest legislation so when we finally do reach breaking point, they have all these laws they can beat us with. And then you'll have people who tell you "Well, you shouldn't have broken the law."

The main issue about England, is your « lord » problem.
Been the case for the last 2 centuries
French have a problem of bourgeoisie, but they remember that last time their were really pissed, heads of been cut off
Just see how you’re behaving with the Queens death
Tanking your economy because a old 96year old died ?
This has absolutely no impact on your daily life
But striking, woooo no we shouldn’t do that
