It depends on your coursework, how long you’ve been in community college (CC) and the destination 4-year-college.
In general, your CC grades will count more than your HS grades, especially after two years in CC.
Transferring credits can sometimes be an issue.
Be sure to consult the college to which you are applying for their requirements.

A student wants me to change her grade because her college admission will be revoked if I post the "D" she's earned. What should I consider?
This has actually happened to me twice in the last 3 years. One girl came to me, and asked me to change her grade from 2 years before because she would lose a full ride at UCLA if the D remained on her report card… Another student said he couldn’t fail my class because they would revoke his admission to SDSU. I gave both of them the same answer, and got the same result.
I said, “Great, bring me a letter from the university explaining your situation. Then we can discuss it.” The one with the full ride for UCLA told me she would be back the next day, I am still waiting, that was the year before last. The other student, from last year, brought in a letter apologizing for lying to me. I accepted his apology, and gave him the grade he earned.
This is a hard one. I’d hate to be the one to break a kid’s life, but I would certainly make them PROVE what they were telling me. I would certainly make them do WORK to make up for their missing work.

Don’t believe anyone who says it doesn’t, because they sure as fuck do.
Here’s why.
I scored 94% odd in my 10th board exams and I barely scraped through the cut off list in Army Public School, Guwahati after someone in the third waiting list dropped out.
I scored 85% in my +2 boards and didn’t make it through the college I badly wanted in Delhi. In fact, my grades were the reason I had to leave Delhi and move to Calcutta.
I scored barely 52% odd in my BSc. I have an honors in Physics and for those who know Calcutta University, well, I’m a survivor. And this was way back in 2007–08.
Later, I interviewed for MSc positions in many colleges and universities that I badly wanted to go to.
I was laughed at and ridiculed by some of the country’s best colleges for my “poor” scores and was told by many other top institutes that “people who apply here usually score 80% and above!”
I answered every question thrown at me, I solved every problem asked of me, and I even threw light on a few alternate approaches to basic physics problems in kinematics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism at a few places. Yet, my scores, or the lack of it, were questioned.

What happened during your Bachelor’s? Did someone die? Were you on drugs? Girlfriend(s)?
Every…fucking…time.
2 years after I finished my master’s, I cracked a national level exam, got through a decent institute in a project I truly loved and started working on my PhD.

Ask that friend of yours who missed cracking the IIT-JEE by 1 mark.
Ask that super smart, highly intelligent inventor friend of yours why he failed his board exams or university exams because he felt learning from text books was obsolete and redundant.
Ask the son of a poor farmer who scored 75% in his 12th grade exams, studying under a streetlamp, only to realise that he was 5% short of getting a scholarship to go for his higher studies.
Again, like it or not, grades DO matter.

How do I get over the fact that I'm not going to get in to the college that I want to go to because as a junior in high school, my grades aren't good?
You just do.
You decide that going to college is more important than not going to college because you didn’t get into the one you wanted.
And you find out that college is worth going to, even if it isn’t your first choice.
Meanwhile, between now and when you apply, do your absolute best, because it will still give you the most options.
Me, I graduated from high school with a 1.8 GPA, and never even thought I’d go to college. But I found one that was new, that saw my potential, and we were a good match for each other.
Few kids actually go to famous colleges. It just happens those are the ones we hear about. There are many excellent colleges that are rated “above average” yet way below the top tier.
If you really want to go to a top tier university, make sure to get the highest grades you can at college, and prove that you are worthy, and apply as a transfer student.
The biggest reason most kids don’t do that, is because once they get to their colleges, they realize they’re OK.
And if you still want to go to a big name school, do really great in college, and go to the big name school for your graduate degree.
It is frustrating to not get what you want, and sad when you know it is your own fault for not getting great grades. From here—look forward!

Do good grades matter in life?
Usually yes, sometimes no.
In the job world, they matter immensely. And when I say grades, I’m including the university you studied at as part of that. Great grades help at every stage. From getting that job in the first place, to your colleagues first impression at your job, to helping you get that next job, etc…
I know friends that have literally coasted through careers, paid US$500k+ by the time they’re 40, because their academic achievements were amazing.
A lot of people assume that ultimately hard work and intelligence will show through. The problem is that humans are generally pretty superficial. They’ll just assume that guy with a 1st class degree from Cambridge is super-smart and it takes a lot of repeated evidence for them to finally realise that the lady with an upper second-class degree from Southampton is actually smarter. Perhaps she wasn’t as motivated in those studying years, or had to pay for her studies by working evenings and weekends.
And she might get more done, and work harder, but it looks better on the company profile that the company has a first-class Cambridge grad heading the team.
I guess grades matter even more in the academic world.
But in other areas of life, such as business, sports, entertainment they have very little value.
But the vast majority of people end up in the job world. And that probably includes you…

In the job world, they matter immensely. And when I say grades, I’m including the university you studied at as part of that. Great grades help at every stage. From getting that job in the first place, to your colleagues first impression at your job, to helping you get that next job, etc…
I know friends that have literally coasted through careers, paid US$500k+ by the time they’re 40, because their academic achievements were amazing.
A lot of people assume that ultimately hard work and intelligence will show through. The problem is that humans are generally pretty superficial. They’ll just assume that guy with a 1st class degree from Cambridge is super-smart and it takes a lot of repeated evidence for them to finally realise that the lady with an upper second-class degree from Southampton is actually smarter. Perhaps she wasn’t as motivated in those studying years, or had to pay for her studies by working evenings and weekends.
And she might get more done, and work harder, but it looks better on the company profile that the company has a first-class Cambridge grad heading the team.
I guess grades matter even more in the academic world.
But in other areas of life, such as business, sports, entertainment they have very little value.
But the vast majority of people end up in the job world. And that probably includes you…

There is so much more to you than some silly letters, and I wish more people understood that.

I'm going anonymous because I think this is a little controversial, but my view is that while success in high school can give you an initial advantage, in the long run, high school, and often college, are merely rights of passage and minor credentials that really make a difference only rarely, and grades are mostly irrelevant, so long as you pass and can demonstrate that you have the skills needed for a job.
When you get out of high school, some employers will not hire people who did not graduate or get a GED. (Actually, this is a short-sighted position that usually comes from a rigid corporate structure. It is mostly held by larger employers.) The only people who actually care about your high school GPA are college admissions people. And even then, as long as you graduated high school, you will be able to find some college who will let you in. Most community colleges will take you, and many 4-year ones as well. You won't get a full ride scholarship or get into an Ivy League school on your 1.0 high school GPA, but that's true of plenty of people with much higher scores as well.

College is much the same way. Lots of jobs have a paper requirement for a college degree or a bachelor's degree. Lots of people get a degree without being all that smart or learning much in the way of useful skills. But if they have a degree, they're eligible for the job. College GPA counts for a little more. Employers choosing between two employees to hire may look at GPA, and if there's a big disparity, the higher GPA has some advantage. But most jobs are not the result of the comparison of paper resumes and GPAs, they're the result of knowing people, having skills that are needed, and generating a good reputation. And the farther you get from college or high school, the less your grades will matter.
Mastery of skills is important, and school is a trial run for working life. Let's say you go to a gym and work hard. At the end of workout, you would be profusely sweating and your muscles would be aching a lot. If we equate school to a gym, that sweat is the marks you scored.
What is important is not the sweat itself [which is just salt water] but what you did to get the sweating. If you are doing the right way, the sweat indicates that you might be developing endurance and strength in your body. In short, it is that endurance and strength that matters in the gym, which we cannot see and thus use sweat as a proxy.
In the same way, it is your knowledge and reasoning skills you acquire in school that is ultimately important. Unfortunately, we don't have an easy way of seeing that and thus use examinations and marks as proxies [we are slowly developing better proxies both at the gym and at schools].

Just as you can fake sweat [stand near the heater, spray water on yourself, be afraid of something] you can absolutely fake marks without building the mental strength. Many do so. However, sooner or later they end up in courses and careers that they hate. And other times you might not sweat at all [the gym could have been cool] but still might be building the strength.
