please do not let politics be the reason why you're ignorant
(let’s just try and put politics aside for now cuz the focus is on China and it’s cultural history, how much it has improved over the years ,how they have their modern innovations and still remember their beautiful past.)
(edit:my answer is super long because it’s hard to put my feelings into words and I’m sorry for being long winded but you can just look at the pictures and scroll all the way to the bottom, the last two to three paragraphs are kind of like a mini summary ‍♀️:) you can leave questions for me too if there’s anything you want to know about the country or the culture,I’ll love to answer them!!and I’m so sorry if what I’m writing sounds repetitive to you because I was trying my best to put those feelings into words and as you guys can probably tell,it definitely wasn’t easy at all)
yes,a lot.

i went to China in 2017 as an 11 year old kid who didn’t have very good impressions of the country prior to that. as a Cantonese,(edit:I’m a Singaporean Chinese,my grandfather came from guangdong so I’m of Cantonese descent:) ✨)I grew up watching Hong Kong dramas and mainland China would forever be portrayed as a poor village or a rural area.this was how I’ve always viewed the country,as a kid,I also heard about those “stories” where you get abducted easily in China, there are many scammers in China and how their public toilets do not have doors to them, how their people are mean, rude and nasty.and then baby me trusted whatever the adults said.
i went to China with my school, not my family.yes we went to tourist attractions and fancy fancy restaurants and luckily enough,we visited a school and a car factory. it was beautiful.the tourist attractions we visited were mostly historical relics and there was a different beauty to it,sure,it’s not modern beauty but it’s unique in a certain way,and there were many fascinating stories of the people from the older days. it’s a country with 4000 years of history,a country with a really really fascinating and complicated history,so many so many stories of people of the past and how great China was back in the days.

it’s beautiful,at least in the eyes of mine
they weren’t taken with cameras of the best quality but I think you might be able to feel something just be looking at the pictures, the story behind them that definitely cannot be explained in a few words.
(I’m sorry I was too young back that to actually have the consciousness to take beautiful pictures so these were taken by my teachers :))
yea it’s filter-less but I’m sure without the filter, through the screen, you can see the country’s beauty.it’s the peacefulness that attracts me,how everything seems so simple yet so complicated and beautiful at the same time.you can tell from the pictures that there’s a long long story to it.now that I’m looking back at this,I feel like I can imagine how glorious China was back in the days, how strong and mighty and beautiful they were.
there’s a different beauty to all these places and I’m not sure if you guys can see it but I can and I could. as a Chinese,it wasn’t very hard for me to finally see a different side to China 5 years ago. as a young girl,I was taken aback by everything.

I’m sorry to have to ruin these pictures like this.anyway,I really liked the vibes of this picture in the calligraphy room, the beauty of Chinese indeed.
i don’t even think you have to understand the words to see the beauty in it
it has that very peaceful thing to it,beauty in peace eh and look at the colours of the school !! how pretty !!i would have loved to go to a school this pretty !!
after this photo dump, what I’m trying to say is that China is not what we all remember them to be.the country has really improved a lot and it’s very very modern now !! while keeping the beauty of their history in them, they’re advancing in technology as well!! as they embrace their culture, they’re moving forward.
there’s literally no one using cash nowadays, all using their e wallets, yes even the elderly and the young children.there’s technology everywhere(I’m not gonna show u pics cuz of copyright and all that hehe)like you go the supermarket and you do the self check out,you stand in front of the machine and wait for them to recognise you through your eyes and then deduct money from your wallet.you look at all the robots serving you, being your tour guides.

this is the amazing part of China, and I saw the beauty in their history myself when I was there and started being interested in their culture, thus knowing about the technological advancements.
Well yeah, everybody else out there probably don’t want to visit China because of propaganda and all those politics, resulting in people being biased.yea it’s hard but all I ask of you is to keep your mind open and before coming to judgements, take a look at the country yourself, visit China yourself and you’ll probably be mindblown (cuz I don’t know which culture has a history as long as theirs and also because of your originally biased mindset:))
I really hope you see the beauty in the country,it’s not the country from the 1970s anymore, they’ve advanced in every way possible and they’re no longer just a 3rd world country.(especially in the developed cities)they are doing great and they’re definitely more that that already and I’m forever proud to call myself a Chinese

Nathan James:
Absolutely!
I had no idea what China was like until I visited. It completely altered my perception of the country.
Since then, I’ve studied China in much greater detail. And I did so without relying on Western media which, frankly, is completely unreliable. I realized that Western media constantly lie about China.
The country is magnificent. The urban areas far surpass what you find in the West. Los Angeles, New York City, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome…these great cities don’t hold a candle to China’s greatest cities!
China’s government receives the highest marks in the world! This is according to the Edelman Trust Barometer, as well as a study by Ash Center at Harvard Kennedy School.
China is a wonderful role model for all nations…

FACT #1: China hasn’t fought a single war since 1979. No other major power in history has ever had such a long unbroken period of peace.
FACT #2: China is helping countries in the Global South, as well as in Europe, build their infrastructure through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Over 142 countries have signed up and more than half of them have thousands of BRI projects under way. Just a few weeks ago, Argentina signed up for BRI!
Countries in Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia are very grateful for China’s infrastructure assistance.
FACT #3: China is helping countries in the Global South vaccinate their populations as the rich Western nations have abandoned them through vaccine hoarding.
FACT #4: China is pursuing diplomacy throughout the Middle East rather than bombing the shit out of the region. Recently, it signed a 25-year cooperation deal with Iran.
FACT #5: China is negotiating with the Taliban for the future of Afghanistan instead of invading and occupying the country for 20 years.
FACT #6: China is leading the ASEAN countries in peaceful trade through RCEP, the world’s largest free trade bloc.
FACT #7: China is inviting all nations to participate in her space station program, including the United States. Recall that USA banned China from the ISS.
FACT #8: China is working hard diplomatically to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, countries that China has excellent relations with.
Turn after turn, China has proven her peacefulness and benevolence.

Carl Johnson
I walk, a lot!. Something I rarely did when living in the US. It is just so easy to walk to work.
Take taxis for longer distances. Don't need to own a car here. Taxis are easy to catch and you don't have to worry about where to park your car.
I don't buy “Crap”. I now live a very utilitarian lifestyle. Everything I own can fit in 3 or 4 suitcases. Something I noticed about many Chinese, they just don't buy stuff they don't need, (Does not apply to the new wealthy chinese although even they do not seem to buy a lot of stuff “crap” “knick Knacks” to fill their homes like you see in the US)
I don't drink cold drinks anymore. This took a few years to get used to but now I prefer room temperature drinks.
Pay with my phone using We Chat. It is just so convenient. I can see an end to cash in modern society. Even the street vendors take payment using We Chat. This switch was actually kind of forced on me. I took a taxi and only had a 100 RMB note. The driver did not have change. he suggested I use We Chat, so I did and have used it a lot since then. (I actually was against using electronic payments before this “incident”. I am glad I was forced into it)

I don't watch Television since I came to China. Stop watching TV and you will come to realize just how much television shapes your perception of the world. Have not even turned on the television in over 2 years!
I don’t snack (especially at night) and I eat a lot more vegetables. Come to think of it, I eat a lot more rice now. I use to hate plain rice, now I actually enjoy it, although I still can't consume anywhere near as much as my Chinese colleagues do! They eat such huge piles of rice at lunch I wonder where they put it!!
I shower at night before going to bed. My whole life I always showered in the morning.
Wear slippers in my apartment. Although even in the US we would usually take our shoes off in our home, but now I wear slippers in the home.
Don't use heat or air conditioning. Yes even in winter we only run the heater before going to bed and for an hour after getting up in the morning. The air conditioner, never.
Hand wash most of our clothes and hang dry them. Now even when I return to the US I will hand wash many of my clothes. Jeans still go in the washing machine.
Drink Tea. I never really liked tea before coming to China. Always loved coffee. Just kidding, I still don't like tea and have stuck with coffee. I tried but I just love my coffee. Of course I drink tea when I visit peoples homes and am offered it. But I still do not enjoy it like the Chinese do.

David Levy
Let me tell you a story:
In 1986 I went across China, from Beijing to Urumqi, Turpan, and Kashgar. On the way I stopped off in DaTong, on a mission to find an American guy who had moved there (turns out he had already left China— but that’s not relevant to the story).
On the train I met a young PLA soldier who spoke pretty good English. He was traveling home for the first time in over a year, and hadn’t been in contact with his family all that time. It would have been reasonable had he simply said goodbye to me at the station and went on his way, but instead he took me to his home. His mother cried when she saw her son and rushed out to buy meat, fish and other really expensive things. This was a coal mining family, with one room, and everyone heating and sleeping on top of the one kang . (An entire row of these houses shared one outhouse— three brick walls, two bricks on the ground for squatting.)
Of course I was too ignorant to be embarrassed about this lavish treatment.
Then after dinner, instead of sitting around reconnecting with his family, he helped me find people back in town who might help me with my mission.
My opinion of China and the Chinese? After over 30 years I’m still here, and still have a warm feeling when I think about that special dinner with the DaTong coal miners.
