Originally planned to be an apartment complex, a new boss by the name of Lee Joon decided midway that he wanted it to become a shopping centre instead. Cracks in the building started to appear just a few short years after opening, after the air conditioning units were dragged across the roof, causing cracks. By April 1995, more cracks were beginning to appear on the fifth floor too. Lee and the management’s only response was to move merchandise from the top floor to the basement.

At 5PM on the 29th June 1995, the fifth floor ceiling began to sink. Still, Lee did not close the store or order any emergency repairs. Nearly an hour later, audible cracking sounds filled the building, prompting staff to sound the alarms and evacuate the customers. However, it was too late. The roof collapsed and the air conditioning behemoths dropped through it, smashing through each and every floor. The main columns buckled and within less than twenty seconds, the south wing of the building came crashing down, killing over 500 people and injuring over 900 more.

What's really stupid about this is, he lost money by being so 'ruthless'. Think about it, the building collapsed early and he lost every bit of profit it could have earned. Basically he, like most ‘ruthless' business men, was terrible at business.

Because the “ruthless businessmen” are always short sighted and stupid. Sometimes they are lucky, sometimes not. For the same reason in developing countries they favor low taxes and deregulation vs economic policy that would actually strengthen the economy and purchasing power of their customers.
The main issue is we as a society accept that type of character as a symbol of a good businessman. Musk doesn’t get flak for his shenaningans for example. Some of his ideas work but some you can clearly see face spectacular problems but no one says a thing(starlix). Everyone has to follow the ruthless businessman to the end.

Better to be fired than to be responsible for the deaths of multiple people. I also don't understand why there weren't any government inspectors. If I want to build an annex, I have to get the plans approved. And it's only me and my family living there, not thousands of people shopping there.

He tricked in salt water because he got that for free from the sea. Salt water when mixed with concrete/cement etc... Gives you weaker stuff. The guy added floors then added some more.

It’s pretty obvious from the story that to be able to pull off such a construction in the first place, he must have bribed off quite a few people to get through the inspection and approval. Meaning he had money and power. If it wasn’t such a big disaster and attracted such national attention, he might have even gotten away scot free.

Similar thing happened in Lagos a year or two ago. Bad but not this bad. Under construction and during an inspection one of the buildings collapsed killing a dozen or more people including the owner.

The sad truth is, had he and many like him not been completely ruthless, they wouldn’t have made their fortune from the first place, especially in times when a country leaps from poverty to quick development, where the capital, the quick adapting (as in copying from the successful ones), the boldness, and the “de-prioritization” on other humans’ well-being are almost the only factors contributing to their nouveaux riches. Only later would the more skilled entries be favored in the arena of wealth building than the sheer aggressiveness and the exploitation (in a fashion similar to simple land grabbing gradually giving to more well-thought of land utilizing). Needless to say, South Korea now as a developed country probably won’t produce any tragedies like the one mentioned in this post. No chance!

Yes, the chaebols still have strong influence on a lot of things but many CEOs and owners have been jailed during the past few decades, laws have been amended to provide checks and now the owners are much more careful regarding the law and their public image. It's no longer the wild west here.
