My father is approaching the age of 65.
He actually thought he could just sit at home, eat, sleep and watch TV, tried that, but it turned out to be way too boring and he never expected what was coming his way in a couple of years.
So after retirement, he put his knowledge and experience to good use and started working as a management consultant. He takes on projects in western and southern India from time to time and travels when needed.
Otherwise, he loves sitting on the rocking chair in our sunny balcony and reading the newspaper.

His schedule was pretty relaxed until last year when, unfortunately, my granny and mom were both incapacitated one after the other. Even with hired help, the dependency on him didn’t disappear.
At his age, he is changing diapers, cleaning them when the nurse is on leave, cooking delicious meals, managing the household, undertaking some of the daily chores, paying bills, shopping, and a lot more.

I help him as much as possible by taking care of online technology-related stuff, anything that can be done from half a globe away. He is probably more interested in recipes and the kitchen now than I am.
I would love for him to sit back, relax, watch TV, and enjoy the fruits of his glorious professional life.

But not everyone has that luxury.
Many senior citizens continue to be involved in one thing or the other unless they are medically unfit and unable to move around.
Some work for money, to pay their bills since Govt doesn’t give a pension to everyone
Some work for productive engagement of the brain, to remain mentally active
Some don’t have another choice and work out of helplessness
Some just can’t retire and take a back seat, so they’ll continue to boss around other family members

With advances in medicine and awareness in people, most seniors are pretty fit in their 60s and wouldn’t want to bore themselves to death by turning into couch potatoes.
Even if they want to, it’s totally their choice.

Most 65 year olds can’t retire anymore. Most are active running businesses and taking care of families. The threshold of saving enough for retirement has changed, and most 30 year olds that think 65 year olds sit around on their asses are heading to a rude awakening. A great majority of successful businesses are run by people in their 70’s… and 80’s. Healthy older people who can actually take care of bullshit.

Exactly True which is also happening with me……I am 72. I work with the same zeal as I was 55 and earn double of what I was in 55. Thanks to passion on profession, daily walk/physical exercise/yoga/breathing exercise/Meditation. And above all my family treat me with good value and take care of my nutritional food and other domestic needs.

Good for your Dad, it's wonderful to see people engaged and happy in their 60’s!
I'm 66, this is my workshop. I purchased my house and outbuildings 6 weeks ago. The primary reason I chose this property is this huge building to use as a work area. I have plans to do so much, and I'm getting things put together a little a time. But if I didn't have a place to work and build things I'd wither and die. Retirement in my estimation is the opportunity in life to finally work for yourself, attaining YOUR goals!

I’m almost 70, lost my wife to cancer almost two years back. Stopped consulting five years ago to take care of my wife.
I play golf thrice a week, bridge online a few days a week. Read the newspaper and watch movies especially those I could not see in my younger days.
Try to stay physically and mentally active.

How did your father get into management consulting? Is this work from home? I need some recommendations for my father too who can’t seem to relax!

Hi Subha, thanks for asking. His friend already owned a management consultant firm so dad joined him right after retirement. His friend had contacts and got the projects and they worked together. Since covid he started taking independent projects as well. Most work is from home these days but since he is into industrial engineering, he visits the factories and company plants to assess.

Right on! I have worked as an insurance agent for 46 years at the same company and still love what I do. Also I have played baseball not softball all my life on competitive teams and compete against age 50 and over players. I will turn 70 in a couple of weeks and God willing continue to do so! Stay busy do what you love and I manage my diabetes with exercise and one med and recent cardiology visit gave me a clean bill of health!

My husband is 65 and I have not seen him change . He had to retire from his job as that was mandatory at 65. He still works as a consultant and his hobbies need him to be mentally and physically fit and so he works out. Our friends are also around the same age and I have not seen any one just sit and read the newspaper and be waited on. There are so many things to do and involved in! Of course, if one enjoys the newspaper reading, why not!! An individual choice.

Angie M to Sarit Deshpande
Exactly Sarit. The age for state pension in the UK is now 66. Fortunately my husband and I paid into private pensions so we always intended retiring at 66, two years ago. As it turned out our daughter had a baby just as I retired and her second baby a year later. We love retirement as we mind or see our grandchildren four times a week and it also makes the time away from them our own to do what we want, swimming and just relaxing reading the news. However, without those babies I probably would be bored in retirement.

I went back to work ‘part time’. I enjoy working and I still have some time for voluntary work. The extra money comes in handy too and I haven’t had to dip into my Super yet. I live alone and would go balmy if I didn’t have something to do and a chance to meet people.

Good for him. My motto is keep working or you will send your brain to an early death. Working keeps you busy, occupied plus stimulates your mind. I will pray to God that I work till my last day.

The best way to keep lives of senior citizens happy is to give them two things - wonderful social interactions, and a sense of purpose.
If they had things to accomplish, they would, with their formidable knowledge and experience, be able to contribute massively!
Retiring people based on age is just ageless silliness.

At 65, I still was working full time. Was able to retire at 66 with a full pension. I now am 71 and still do not sit around watching TV. Even during the pandemic lock-down, I exercised with various online videos, played with the dog, participated in board meetings via Zoom, and called older shut-ins to keep them from feeling socially isolated. Today, for example, I hosted a garden club meeting, attending a heart board meeting at lunch, and played bridge all afternoon. Very little on TV interests me although I enjoy shows like Ted Lasso, My Octopus Teacher, Tasting History and others. These usually are for after dinner when I wind down before bed. Doers tend to keep doing and passives tend to watch doers, regardless of their age.

Fortunately or unfortunately 85% of the old age population work even till last day of their death. Not everyone is lucky to be relaxing at home as money is not simple for anyone. Its always good to work and be involved in some work, seating idle will make you fall sick, more than anything spare your kids with their responsibilities as they have their own struggle to fight. Most Indian parents think their Sons are an future investment which is actually a curse. Stay fit and pray for peaceful death where you dont depend on others either for money or medical help.
