What are some silly misconceptions Americans have about Europe?

Okay, I’ll bite.
It’s probably more accurate to call what I’m about to describe as “sextive blindness” rather than a silly misconception, but many Americans tend to equate “Europe” with “western European countries that speak either Germanic languages, Romance languages, or Finnish.”
An American who tells you that they’ve visited “almost every country in Europe” has probably visited most of the countries marked in green on the map below. But they’re remarkably willing to give themselves credit for visiting “almost every country in Europe” even though they’ve never set foot on the Balkan Peninsula or in any country where the Cyrillic alphabet is in widespread use.

What, even Greece is not quite Europe? That's where it all started!

Laurence Greenwood
And yet when you ask an average Greek, he will tell you that he's not European, but Greek. When I lived there, one man spoke a sentence I remember to this day. “There is Europe, there is the Islamic world, there is the Slavic world, and then there is Greece.”

Terence Howard
My country is much the same to be honest. Europe is them, we are British. Even though Britain is in Europe, you often hear people say “I’m going to Europe on holiday”. I think general rule of thumb, the bigger the history of the country, the more likely they are to identify with their country rather a whole continent.

Scott Longwell
I don't think it's the long history. France also has a long history but they see themselves as part of Europe.
I think the issue is that both the UK and Greece feel that they stand apart from the European club.

Laurence Greenwood
Indeed, you are completely correct. One factor that played into this, I think, is the rapid way in which the E.U. transformed from a purely economic alliance to a political entity with one coin, that mandates policies onto its territories. It wasn't really organic transformation, and the people had little say in the matter. And that is only the past 40 years or so. Most E.U. states have histories going back to ancient times.

It depends. Greeks tend to change how they identify based on where they are.
If they’re outside of Europe, they identify as Europeans. If they’re in Europe, they don’t identify as Europeans but as Greek. If they’re in Greece then they identify as Athenians, Peloponnesians, Cretan, etc, depending where they or their family is from.
We like to feel special, you see.

Sounds about right. For myself the yellow in the map instead equates to “far off europe”. I know better but still mentally forget in everyday conversations. I think it comes down that Americans mostly hear about Western European nations in media and news. Our popular news sources are terrible.

Murali Tumahai
Frankly, there are a lot of Western Europeans who think the same way.

Slack-Man
In all fairness when I lived in Germany, it was still West Germany and the yellow portion was hard to visit.
Since then I’ve only been to Sweden (on business trips)
Asia was no better. Just the Philippines, Japan and Korea.

Agreed. You have to take into account that before the fall of the Soviet unx in the early 1990’s it was VERY DIFFICULT to travel to “not quite Europe” under most circumstances.

Tristan Reubard
You could easily without problems visit Yugoslavia.

Slack-Man
My landlord did. They loved it.
Actually I had an additional issue as my wife at the time had a Philippine passport and it made travel to some countries more difficult (we had issues getting a Italian and Austrian visa, both consulate office in Munich wanted us to go to the main embassy in Bonn but we are already in Garmisch Partenkirchen).

Ben Orange
Most Americans don't think that. In my opinion, it's Western Europeans who push the idea that the EU is Europe (granted, that's not exactly what this map shows).

Let’s face it: there are folks on both sides of the Atlantic whose grasp of geography of the other respective continents is lacking. Twenty yrs ago a friend who is a public school and Oxford graduate asked for advice on a trip he was planning. His family would fly into San Diego and drive up to the Sea-Tac and Vancouver area to fly home to the UK.
He wanted advice on what attractions and natural wonders were worth visiting. I asked him how long he planned to in the States; he said “one week.” I suppressed a laugh but explained that all they would have time to do is wave as they drove by the San Diego Zoo, the Hearst Mansion, Disneyland, Yosemite, etc. It’s about 1,400 miles. Must have looked closer on a globe.

That’s okay, Europeans think America is New York, California, and Chicago.

I can just say that I do have some American friends, and visited USA several times as a tourist and for business.
And I liked it as a tourist. But the common misconception was about my friend. He is a “hardcore European”, his roots can be traced as far as XV century.
And we met a common misconception - Americans think that he is not European at all (!!!), just because the guy is Spanish, and obviously speaks Spanish, they mistook him for some “latin” - idk, maybe Italian? Romanian? Both from “Latin world” thing.
It was absolutely shocking to us. I do get that Spain had some colonies, but come on, we don’t call Americans “English” just because they are former English colonizers.

Janet Christian
Many seem to believe it’s one giant third world country. Before I moved to Spain, people were repeatedly telling me what a terrible mistake I was making. My cousin, in fact, emailed, “You’re making a fatal mistake.” I emailed back and asked what she meant. She replied, “A FATAL MISTAKE!” LOL
I was asked if Spain had paved roads, if you could drink the water, and if there were actual grocery stores. To the person who asked the latter question, I posted back a panoramic picture of our local supermarket’s SIXTY aisles.
Even now, people post the craziest questions and concerns in Facebook expat groups. Questions about healthcare, food quality, water quality, danger, etc. Little do these people realize that most of Europe has MUCH better of all these things.

Michael Wall
I am a yank who has visited Europe many times. I constantly laud how friendly most of the people are. Why drives me up the fecking wall is hearing my countrymen trash Europe … most especially France. My question is always, “Have you ever been there?” The answer us always “No.”

Raymond Dring
Many of the white parts of the population fail to appreciate that European civilisations and customs are far far older than settled America and that the industrial revolution that made modern America began in Europe.

Add to that that the knwledge that kicked of the renesance was largely ancient Greek and Roman knowledge that was preserved in the muslim world.

In fairness, most British people will tell you France is a toilet, but we're allowed to XD

Philip Salama
I'll happily insult Britain all day, but I'll raise hell if a bloody Yank thinks that he gets to insult your country. We get to insult each other because we've been neighbours for over a thousand years. They don't get that privilege.

Mark Burn
Yes in England insulting somebody whilst having a drink with them is a sure indication of a strong friendship, this should give an indication about our true feelings towards France and its people……Macron however.

Daniel Richard
Said in rivalry rather than as fact
This is like what people would say about sports teams. “bad" being relative rather than absolute.
The point at which it becomes ignorant is when someone claims it's bad in an absolute sense, justified by false claims such as “can they even afford healthcare?”.
I don't understand so well why Americans ask such questions and British don't.

Gwyn Kemp-Philp
I was indifferent about France until I went to live there for some years.
Now, I literally love France and wish I was still there.
The experience killed off for good about a hundred or so stupid stories about how bad it would be to live there.
Given the choice, I would stay in France.

Antony T Curtis
By tradition, the British and French behave like siblings. We fight and insult each other but when one of us are attacked, the other comes to aid.

A good ten years back I had a buddy/colleague/comrad who went to the US for anti-aircraft missile training. He came back with a handful of hilarious stories.
One of those was a US forces Major (a studied man, mind you) asking him:
“Do you have electricity and running water as standard in your houses over in Germany?”
His answer:
“No, we're crafting your BMWs and Mercedeses with hammers and chisels. From stone!”

With silly questions like that, it might be a good idea to require every college- and high school graduate to visit a country in Europe at least once or maybe improve education so you learn more about countries outside the US.

When my daughter was a freshman she asked me if she could spend a semester in Italy to study the language and culture. While there she asked me if she could fly to Madrid, Paris and London to visit with school friends that were studying there. I said yes and I was happy to pay for it because I looked at it as a wonderful, possibly once in a lifetime opportunity.
My brother was appalled that I would let her do that. He was convinced she would be kidnapped by roving gangs of Muslims.
I told him she would be safer there than most American cities with all their guns. Especially where we live in Detroit.
She now coordinates technical teams from around the world for Google and that life experience is one of the reasons she got that very high paying job.
I am happy to report that at our better universities, and there are many of them, studying abroad is normal and expected.

US elite universities are about on par with the best on offer in Europe and often significantly superior when it comes to networking and a few other things. I always believed that the USA should build on that foundation and broaden access and opportunity. Your raw wealth gives you possibilities that even the UK and my home country Germany can’t dream to realize.
Sadly this and other opportunities for success get squandered. I hope you can change that. Having more well educated people on this planet is a boon to everyone.

David Force
I agree. I see these young graduates making better decisions politically, about our planet, as well as economically and with more diversity than their ancestors.
Most of the candidates running for president strongly support making college affordable or free for the working and middle class. Just last year my daughters university decided to give free tuition to any students whose family income was $65,000 or below. Better educated citizens make better decisions for everybody.

In 7th Grade our Social Studies curriculum was mostly about Europe. We learned about many countries on the continent, and my teacher had made arrangements to set up pen pals, for each of us to have a pen pal in various countries. I ended up with a gal in Thessaloniki, Greece. I kept in touch with her all the way up to 12th grade. I enjoyed learning about her and her life. I even learned about the Greek alphabet through her. It was a great experience. In high school, I joined the American Field Service (AFS) where we had an exchanged student from various parts of the country, and we had a high school student to go abroad. I was in that club all the way up to 12th grade. I met a lot of people from other countries.
Many colleges and universities have a study abroad program, with various trips and study abroad plans.

But how do they treat minority groups, like Hispanics, in Europe?
(Was asked this once! Lol)

Christopher Westburry
Especially in Spain, Hispanics are the largest group suffering from government policies, and Mexicans are so highly discriminated against, they don't even bother to immigrate in significant numbers!

When my husband turned 50 in January 2012, we went on a 10 day tour of Morocco. We joined a group of 25 people. I was there for one of two days before I got sick with food poisoning. I was the only one with food poisoning, but I have a sensetive stomach. I was sick for the remainder of the trip.
Our trip had an overnight stay in Madrid both going and coming. When I landed in Spain on the return and walked off the plane and into the airport building it was just like I had come to Heaven! Tell that to your American friends! Spain, the closest place to Heaven.

Janet Christian
I certainly believe it’s a piece of heaven here on earth. I absolutely love it here. We live on our Social Security in a mountain villa an hour south of Valencia. Beautiful mountain setting and yet only 20 minutes to the gorgeous Mediterranean and white sand beach. I can’t imagine a better life.

Maybe it’s worth mentioning, for the avoidance of doubt, that Morocco is Africa, not Europe.

Yes, Morocco is a country outside Europe, but still very close to Spain, only a hop away by air. I should not assume that everyone knows their geography. I work in travel, so I HAVE to know or I would send you to the wrong places.

I was asked if Spain had paved roads, if you could drink the water, and if there were actual grocery stores.
You should have just said no, we are driveling in sh*t. Its better for such people to not know existence of such different places like Spain, leave aside go to those places.
