There are many things that foreigners may find surprising or hard to believe about the United States until they come here and see them for themselves. Some examples include:
. The size and scale of the country: The United States is a large country with diverse landscapes, from the mountains and deserts of the West, to the vast forests and prairies of the Midwest, to the bustling cities and beaches of the East Coast.
. The diversity of the population: The United States is a melting pot of different cultures, ethnicities, and languages, and this is reflected in the diverse neighborhoods and communities found in cities and towns across the country.
. The abundance of fast food and convenience stores: The United States is known for its fast food chains and convenience stores, which can be found on almost every street corner.
. The gun culture: The United States has a unique culture around guns, with a constitutional right to bear arms, which is different from many other countries.
These are just a few examples, but there are many other things that foreigners may find surprising or hard to believe about the United States until they come here and experience them for themselves.

That many Americans actually find it difficult to understand English people talking.
I thought this was massively overstated to being almost a joke, but for many people I met (New York) they really couldn’t understand me - to the the point one asked me (seriously) if I could speak English!

The city is so dirty.
The subway is like war-zone.
It is so dangerous on the streets and subway.
hopeless is everywhere.
When I went over the study in USA back in 1995, I was shocked with unbelieve that they just had
OPAC system in the university, and told me that it is something new in USA! But in Singapore, they already had everywhere it in the 80’s!

1.Every American is obese.
There are plenty of health freaks in America, as a matter of fact only about 1/3 of the population is obese (36.2%). Now while that is no number to boast about, a lot of foreigner (or at least what I heard from foreigners) believe every american in overweight.
2.Every American is a gun toting manic.
In all my time living here, the only time I have ever seen people people carrying a gun is while hunting, at a shooting range, or if they are a police officer. Most people whole one a gun keep it at home for self defense. Also, there is a plethora of laws o ensure that guns don’t end up in the wrong hands.
3.America has no culture.
I am not going say that America has as much culture as many other countries, but I also won’t say it has no culture. We have traditions dating all the way back to November 1623 that is still held today (Thanksgiving), besides a lot of historical sites like Boston and Salem Massachusetts, history was a great factor in shaping our culture. Heck, if you want to see for yourself, take one look at New Orleans, or California, or Hawaii, or Alaska. Many different places have their own culture. Sure it may not be a thick culture, but it is a culture none the less.

They are patriotic.
It may come as a surprise to many.
My Indian friend once made a visit to my home town, fortunately it was the beginning of July then. He stayed with me for a week and was truly surprised to witness the celebration of 4th of July, the American Independence Day.
The lit up houses, decorated city, the enthusiasm in us, celebration ceremonies, and of all the massive fireworks. He was also amazed to see how parents passed on their patriotism to their children. And how each one has a childhood story to narrate.
He said, “I never thought the roots of patriotism run so deep in the veins of Americans. I am so happy that I decided to visit you during this time of the year.”

It’s not the way it’s shown in movies or tv series.
You will not have friends hanging out with you after work everyday in cafe. Even on weekends.
