Though it stems from the Korean War, budae jjigae — or “army base stew,” named after the leftover United States Army rations that make it up — is a symbol of resourcefulness and survival during a time of great poverty. The fiery broth is fortified with kimchi, gochujang and an assortment of flavorful sausages. Hot dogs are common, but kielbasa, breakfast sausage and Italian sausage all lend their own special character to the final broth, so use what you like. Arrange the ingredients in the pot in sections, and don’t stir too much while cooking: The joy of eating a big, burbling budae jjigae is reaching for your favorite part of the stew. For many, it’s the Spam, both salty and sweet; for others, it’s the American-cheese-laden noodles, bouncy with chew. Serve this soul-warming stew family style, with white rice to balance its punchy flavors. (Watch the video of Eric Kim making budae jjigae here. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/13/dining/eric-kim-korean-food-recipes.html)

It's a symbol of the US occupation of South Korea actually.

@ajtototo
It is well known that the army pot originated from leftovers scavenged by poor Koreans from the garbage bins of the American military in Korea.

It is the leftover from the U.S. military for dogs, but Korean like it.

Lol. The Chinese website (weibo) translated this post-They said you stated abnd laughed that Budae Jjigae was made from the leftover of USA army. Thanks for letting me know which one is true.

@Arya_booms
I think this is the taste I liked 10 years ago

@CSAhn3
No Koreans would think of disg as a symbol of US occupation. Most Koreans believe US saved us from Communism. US is the symbol of freedom, and a great friend of the country. US helped us grow from poverty and that's one thing we are grateful about US. Some people just don't know.

@xRug8edQAhUa5Jh
Who made this pot? so yummy~~~

@wi_osori
"Camp Stew" is a symbol of US military neo-colonial occupation and it looks just about as appetizing.
This is like blessing the "resourcefulness" of old people with three jobs instead of lamenting what a horrific shame that people have to live like this.

@SoudkiAtassi
It looks horrible.
Recipe: put everything you have in the fridge in a pot and boil it.

@huangEason11
Koreans regard American leftovers as their treasures.

@pao11lyue
as we know, there is no delicious food in Korea

@ZaphodsFolly
NYTimes drops a new beat, Culinary Perseverance Porn. Next they’ll tell us about concentration camp cuisine in US internment camps holding Japanese-Americans? What kinds of soup did they dine on at Auschwitz? Rich white liberals want to know!
@ZaphodsFolly

@Wittgenstein_PI
Poverty is having an assortment of flavorful sausages.

@ChewyYorkie
So the American equivalent would be ramen noodles with Vienna sausages, Spam, a slice of Kraft’s singles, and lots of hot sauce. Got it.

@OminousBeeping
Now explain why this was necessary.

@LuexMercenary
As a Korean who watched this on the midnight, only thing I have about that tweet is just "I'm really starving, can I eat that together"

South Koreans can still eat traditional Budae jjigae today, cause there are many US military bases where they can get the leftover

@fuckthefinalok
Literally all the Korean can tell that pic is not taken by Korean people because of radish in there

@gusan3695
I don't know who made this "Budae jjigae" in this picture, but what's certain is that they are definitely NOT Korean because it has Takuan in that.

It seems that ur so proud that you can have some leftovers from US military and calls symbol of resourcefulness and survival euphemistically

@punished_kyle70

@monathanjartin
i wonder why this dish became such a symbol, couldn’t have anything to do with the US military occupation, genocide, man-made famine, and embargo im sure

Up Next: what did concentration camp prisoners eat?

@jihneg
They eat our garbage, but they r free.
We gave them sovereignty, so they can't judge our soldiers that violate d their laws, they can't move out our military base either.
We control their media, their election, even their right to command their army, but we gave them democracy.

@XQQxin

@notatoast1
I know this is a solid recipe, just by seeing the American cheese on top. This stew is historically what you make it, but it just doesn't feel the same without that slice of cheese

@m0oN_L0vEr

Are you all trying to make something as heinous as forcing some of the most noble and upright people on earth to eat food from an American garbage bin, appear as though it was really some kind of savvy money-saving exercise? Please just stop.

@eatgarlics

We call this "泔水”,they are not leftovers but Swill, food garbage that even pigs won't eat.

@SLim456789
You mean the American soldiers in Korea have sausages and cheese to eat during the great poverty, while the poor local Koreans can only imagine them?
Gee, NYT. You are so out of touch with Asians’ lives and history.

Kpop is like a Budae jjigae,picking up the leftovers of others and boiling them into a pot.

@amogus41918203
This is the same as claiming "peach on rice" being a symbol of Japanese "resourcefulness" during the Japanese-American interment camps. This is absolute bullshit and you know it.
