This may be a very controversial, but what country do you think is the most interesting culturally and geographically in Asia? And no, this is not ranking cultures, just what you personally see as interesting.

Bhutan. The extreme isolation the country faced, as well as their mountainous geography kept their culture almost intact, and their tradional lifestyle faces an interesting situation were the government (an absolute monarchy until 2000's), allows certain westernization elements to enter or be legal in the country (such as TV, which was legalized and formally introduced in 1993). Even geopolitics wise is an interesting case, as they don't recognize China or Taiwan, and they have their own ethnical conflicts regarding Nepali origin minorities they don't accept as citizens. A curious country that sometimes seems out of this era and with many unique facts regarding it.

Fun fact the King of Bhutan held a vote if they wanted to stay an absulut monarchy, the people voted yes but the King decided to abolish it anyways

I think Mongolia is often slept on too much, it has stunning scenery, some cool historical sites and a great culture and history that is much more than just “they did a bit of conquering”. Def needs some more recognition. Also throat singing is a W

It's my favourite country of the 22 I've been to. It's just got this feeling of being uncharted and wild, and everything feels so alien but so warm and welcoming at the same time. The landscapes are epic and so is the culture.

India is huge and diverse, with thousands of years of recorded history including the rise and fall of multiple huge, powerful empires. Their religious legacy is also one of the most far reaching and influential (not to mention oldest) in the world. Their impact on the wider world is so ingrained that many of us don't realize when we are saying things or using philosophies/technologies/products that originated there. I'm honestly surprised that more people haven't been mentioning them in this thread.

Cormetz
I think it is because most of us have met a lot of Indians personally, so even if you know nothing about the country it feels less unique.

I've visited a few countries in Asia... Korea (was stationed there for a year in the US military, and visited twice since), Japan (did a semester of grad school there), China (3 separate trips), Hong Kong (twice), Singapore (twice), Vietnam, Thailand (twice, many years apart), India, and Sri Lanka. Plus a few layovers at Doha. It would be very difficult to pick one that is the most interesting; I really enjoyed all of them and I'd go back to any of them.
A good friend visited Uzbekistan last year and really had a great trip. I'd love to go there. And for some reason I've always been drawn to Azerbaijan.

I think Georgia is very interesting, because in some ways it reminds of my own country, Slovenia. Small country with diverse landscape, lying at the intersection of arguably two very different geopolitical regions. For Georgia it is eastern Europe vs. western Asia and for Slovenia it is central Europe vs. the Balkans. Also their writing is very exotic and looks beautiful. Culturally, they remind me of mediterranean people, but I haven't been there yet, so I may be completely wrong about that. Khachapuri looks delicious.
Vietnam and southern China, geographically, are amazing. Ha Long Bay, Guilin.. breathtaking. Similairly mystical is rural Japan, especially in the hilly regions, with hot springs and misty forests.
Vladivostok was a bucket list destination, which sadly now isn't an option for the unforseeable future.. The city seems very interesting, because on one hand it is kinda familiar, being slavic and modern with a charming old town centre, but on the other hand it is on the other side of the world, a major port on the Pacific Coast, the final stop of the Trans Siberian Railway, almost bordering North Korea, etc. Seems surreal to think about.

traveldude98
I don't really consider Georgia to be "Asia" I mean Euro-Asia is just one just land mass I get it but culturally it's much closer to Russia/Greece/itself than Central Asia across the way.
Georgians have a variety of looks, blond and blue/green eyes, black hair/brown eyes, fair, tan, etc.
It's 100% worth a go, Tbilisi is a great city.

If you are asking interesting, then nothing comes close to India.
Culturally India, you will find 10 of the top 20 languages.
Cuisine you will get 5 different levels of vegetarian. Honestly, Vegans got nothing on India. You will find the best meat dishes, including amazing beef and pork. We extract alcohol from everywhere.
We are the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism.
We are in the top 5 population of Christianity and Isam.
We have every race.
We have beaches islands, and the tallest mountains. We have a desert and the city with the maximum rainfall in the world.
Only country to have both Tigers and Lions!!!
We have 5 distinct dance and music styles over a 1000 years old.
We have 6 major movie industry and are cumulatively much bigger than Hollywood.
I am not even going into depth. Each city has a 1000 year history and absolute wealth of culture.
For example Mangalore has immigrants from Portugal and immigrants from Arabia from the time of Mohammed. Each have preserved thier Cuisine language and culture like in a time capsule.
And it is not even in the top 10 most interesting places in India.
All cultures are awesome but if are saying interesting then no one comes close to wierd India.

I think that all of Central Asia is unique, but if I had to pick just one country, I'd say Kirghyzstan or Tajikistan. They have their very own culture with russian influence and a little bit of persian and a very interesting history, from the nomads to the Soviet unx. Geographically, there is such beautiful landscapes with a lot of mountains and (almost) no deserts. These countries are a melting pot of landscapes, peoples and cultures in relatively small countries, and it can be found nowhere else in the world.

Indonesia!

pulanina
Came here to say this. Glad someone else agrees.
People in the west don’t realise how enormous and culturally diverse Indonesia is. About 300 - 700 languages (depending on how you define them) but with one common 2nd language in Bahasa Indonesia. Many layers of religion in every place, with a liberal take on Islam dominant but Hindu, Buddhist and Christian religion in so many places too.
Amazing and unique music, dance and traditional theatre, including shadow puppets and richly decorated wooden puppets. You have to experience the energy and drama of the Kecak Dance — more than 50 men perform around Balinese coconut oil lamps dancing rhythmically as if entranced, continuously chanting "chak ke-chak ke-chak ke-chak".
Volcanoes, jungle, ancient terraced farmland, beautiful beaches and islands as far as the eye can see. The animals are everything from terrifying Komodo dragons to cute little geckos on your terrace, from amazingly unique orangutans to cheeky temple monkeys , and then there are the birds of paradise in Papua province!

I think it has to be India if we consider both culturally and geographically. India is so diverse that it is almost a continent within itself. Language, traditions, food change every hundreds of kilometers and geographically there is the Himalayas, the Deccan plateau, Thar Desert, the North Eastern hilly states, Kashmir all put together into a single package. Indian music and films also have a broad following. I don’t think any other country comes close.

I've always been fascinated by China. Geographically, China is very diverse. Tropical jungle in the south, snowy tundra in the northeast, mountains in the southwest, desert in the northwest, and almost everything else in between. Culturally, China has a rich history dating back centuries. China is also home to many different ethnic groups that have various separate traditions, dialects, etc. Cuisine is also very vast and diverse across the country, with spicier and more rice-based foods in the south, and more mild, grain-based in the north. Overall, just an incredible place.

I would say China. Chinese influence really shaped almost all of east Asia thanks to.. In French it is called "sinisation" so my guess would be "sinicization" in English ? Hence why so many countries like Vietnam, Korea and Japan have similar customs, foods, architecture and even alphabet (Korea changed but they used the Chinese alphabet before. Vietnam switched to its own latin alphabet thanks to Portuguese missionaries and the French). It mostly all came from China.
