Now I do say excuse me to ask to get by or through a place but some people don't know etiquette.

I have begged on the street.
As a homeless teen I was afraid and ashamed of my homelessness. I worked any job I could get, gas station, pizza places, hotels, but sometimes I’d still find myself without gas or food.
So on very rare occasion, usually at a gas station or convenience store I’d randomly ask for change, saying I was a little short or forgot my wallet.
I only did this when I was stranded or extremely hungry.
It was humiliating and made me feel dishonest.
So now, if I’m at a gas station or convenience store and I see someone counting out change for a few dollars of gas or snacks for their kids, I always offer to pay or gently give some cash.

We were in line to get on a cruise ship and had to put our suitcases on a conveyer belt to be scanned. His suitcase went through fine, but they pulled mine aside, looking concerned.
That’s when I heard it.
My suitcase was… vibrating.
With growing horror, I watched as they opened up my suitcase and first pulled out handcuffs.
“These are not allowed on the boat, sir.” They said to the boyfriend.
Before he even had a chance to say that it was my suitcase: I bolted.
I left him there awkwardly talking to the security guys and hid around a corner.
I watched as they opened the side pocket and pulled out my vibrator.
I watched as they made him take the batteries out.
I watched his face turn 500 shades of red in front of the huge line of people that we were about to be stuck on a boat with for 7 days.
When he finally caught up to me, he said four words: “You fucking betrayed me.”
I hung my head in shame.

What is a piece of advice that changed you for the better?
I was about eleven when my maternal grandmother told me this.
I walked to my grandparents’ house after school one day. We lived on a farm then and the school I attended was about a mile-long walk through the town to their house.
I was normally a happy child, so when I walked through the door a bit mopey, Grandma implemented the cure that nearly always worked. She took me into the kitchen where she prepared hot chocolate and cookies then waited.
About halfway through my hot chocolate, I said. “I thought this girl at school liked me, but I don’t think she does. She said something mean to me today.” I let that sink in then added the punch line. “I don’t think anyone at school likes me.”
Grandma listened patiently while she sipped her coffee. When she replaced the cup on the saucer, I knew she was going to give me her sage advice.

I was about eleven when my maternal grandmother told me this.
I walked to my grandparents’ house after school one day. We lived on a farm then and the school I attended was about a mile-long walk through the town to their house.
I was normally a happy child, so when I walked through the door a bit mopey, Grandma implemented the cure that nearly always worked. She took me into the kitchen where she prepared hot chocolate and cookies then waited.
About halfway through my hot chocolate, I said. “I thought this girl at school liked me, but I don’t think she does. She said something mean to me today.” I let that sink in then added the punch line. “I don’t think anyone at school likes me.”
Grandma listened patiently while she sipped her coffee. When she replaced the cup on the saucer, I knew she was going to give me her sage advice.

Just because someone walks past you and doesn’t speak, it doesn’t mean they don’t like you. It may mean they’re preoccupied. Sometimes, people may be a bit snippy with you. If you have done nothing wrong, then they are taking their bad day out on you and it has nothing to do with your personally.
I’ve tried to remember that when something unpleasant happens. If I’ve done nothing to warrant someone being a bit sharp with me, then I chalk it up to something that’s happened to them which has nothing to do with me.

“I’m going to rape you on the Purge.” Johnny said, making Sarah’s blood run cold. The Purge had been looming for weeks, all crime would be legal for one night, and nobody was sure what would happen.
Most people she knew had criticized the government, some had disbelieved, but as it grew closer denial had turned into acceptance, and acceptance into planning.
But still, most people she knew had seemed disturbed by the Purge, had been planning to spend the night with friends holed up in a safe place; Lord knows she was planning the same herself. So hearing that somebody she knew, had known, was not only excited for the Purge, but was planning something against her left the girl speechless.
She was home, before she found her tongue again. “Johnny said he’s going to rape me tonight,” she said as soon as she entered, closing the door. The words fell from her mouth in a glassy smooth monotone.

The family home was busy with preparations for the night. It was situated on a hill, away from the other houses of the neighborhood, with a good view of everything around it, but its trees and shrubbery provided cover for the house itself. A few dozen men sat around, in the living room, in the kitchen, in the dining room, all of them armed.
Her brother Kevin looked up from the rifle he was cleaning. He’d shot that same rifle for years, a Savage Axis. ‘Cheap as dirt, ugly and uncomfortable. But hell, if you want to reach out and touch something, It’ll do the job.’ Or so he’d always described it. Sarah had never been all that interested in shooting before today.
“I’d fucking well like to see him try.” Kevin said, bearded face pulled into a deep scowl. “Never did like the that little bastard.”
Sarah just nodded, still unable to believe that this was actually happening.
“We’ve all got your back Sarah!” her neighbor, an old veteran named Tom said, raising a shot glass he was holding, despite it being empty. “Not gonna let nobody touch one of ours.”
There was a course of cheers from the rest of the house. Sarah smiled for the first time all afternoon. Yes, Johnny wanted to do something awful to her. But she was surrounded by her friends, safe in her home. She’d be okay.

A couple of days later she got everything.
I saw her then wrapping all her gifts.
“Can I help you?”

Her excitement was visible. She was proud. She was alive. She was glowing with happiness.

Even though the pony is designed to be a static rocking horse?— his excitement was so significant that the horse slid a few inches forward or backward with every thrust he exerted into the little toy.
My little girl watched, rewarded with a huge smile on her face.
Somehow, witnessing these acts of giving love from my 11-year-old helped me understand the power of giving. Giving from the heart. Giving from the inside out.
Later that day, my girl received some gifts, but she didn't need them. She was focused on others, not on herself. It was evident that she was the one feeling true JOY. She was full.
