Most definitions of mass shooting include at least 3 or 4 victims of gun violence, at which point the 2021 shooting in Plymouth qualified. I would point to the US being better on average earnings and property sizes. Some elements of the constitution seem good, too.

A very childish question, but there are some Americans who are unaware of their history, and dont realise that their country wouid be a very different one if British, predominantly English, people had not bothered to make long, dangerous sea journeys and set up colonies there. ( Whether that was a good thing is another question, if you were one of the many peoples living there already.). But if the English had stayed at home, someone else would have done it - the Spanish, French, German or. Dutch, probably, and American history would have been different. It is possible that several different “ countries” might now exist, as in the southern part of the continent, much of it Spanish speaking. The Louisiana Purchase might not have taken place. Who knows how things could have turned out? Things seem to be deteriorating fast - a mob trying to overthrow an election result by force, a former president very publicly trashing the integrity of many of the country’s major institutions, proclaiming deep corruption, the untrustworthiness of millions of Americans and the need to throw out the rule of law and the Constitution. People can’t disagree; they have to hate. A country founded on Christian principles now wears T shirts saying “Fuck your feelings.” and elected a man advocating grabbing women by the genitals. A young nation is crumbling before our eyes, while a very old one is watching, sadly. A beautiful country, with so much potential and so much already achieved, tearing itself apart. But all is not lost. We had a Civil War, over a hundred years before the USA existed, politically, and we ‘re still standing. Can the US find the strength to save itself? I hope so.

A very childish question, but there are some Americans who are unaware of their history, and dont realise that their country wouid be a very different one if British, predominantly English, people had not bothered to make long, dangerous sea journeys and set up colonies there. Who knows - it might be better, there were a lot of religious extremists who were not sorry to lose. But the question, one of many We’re Better than You ones, ignored the fact that the histories are intertwined. The Founding Fathers were mostly of English descent. Obviously, many other nations added to the national mix, but driving up the coast road from Boston to Bar Harbor, as we have done annually for 25 years, we go through or near so many place names that come from this country, that it feels like home - Bath, Portsmouth, Camden, Cambridge, Ipswich, Worcester, Salisbury, Falmouth etc. we have spent so much time in the US, we feel very at home, so it saddens me to see these infantile play ground jibes. The many Americans who have slept in my guest room are welcomed, and are as sad at the breakdown in common good manners that used to be a hallmark of American life as we are. Who imagined a gallows and shouts of Hang Mike Pence in a place that was one of the world centres of democracy?

So which is fairer? An equal across nation law, or a two part legal system, often in contradiction with each other, leading to appeal after appeal and also favours those with vast amounts of money who can afford the right lawyer.

Going back a few years, the officer classes, the ones with the education, the status, the class and the culture were generally speaking more than happy to let the lower classes, signed up as foot soldiers, to go in front and carry whatever little chip on their shoulder they had with them to be cannon fodder. I’d say it was a terribly unfair, elitist and classist system, but I think it works in this example. The ghastly experiment that has been the USA should give everyone else in the world pause for thought as we sit back and watch the chaos unfold.

Because we’re a fairly logical bunch, us Brits. And by any fair assessment of such an ill-defined notion as “the best in the world”, the USA comes quite a long way down the list. Quality of life is better in most of Europe, yes, including Britain. We’re more safe. We’re happier. We have more freedoms - yes, more, not fewer, which I’m sure will baffle the OP. We’re more equal. Our justice system delivers justice, not bigotry and profit for those already drowning in an excess of money.
I actually can’t think of a single thing that’s better in the USA than most of the developed world. I will, however, concede that your weather is better than the UK - but that’s not a good enough reason to wipe out all the rest. In any case, US-driven climate change will make half the US a desert and probably increase average temperatures here, so even that doesn’t really survive closer inspection…
