During the Philippine-American War, the United States set up concentration camps and rounded up hundreds of thousands of native Filipinos. But the worst part of this was that they had a policy of deliberately under-feeding people who had family members who were still out fighting against American control. Several thousand people starved to death.
This was long before Hitler and his death camps. It was likely inspired by Spanish camps in Cuba and British camps in the Boer War.

When I was about 12, my family passed through the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in northern Nebraska.
I had never been to a reservation before. Despite living in California, a state once rich in Native Tribes and cultures, I’d rarely ever seen a full-blooded native either. Nebraska isn’t California, though. The rolling green prairies were foreign to the inconsistent landscapes I’d grown up used to.
I will never forget the small amount of time I spent driving through that place.

I’d never seen grassland.
Rows and rows of small mobile homes sat clustered together in unassuming undulations of the hills. All of them were painted a crisp, monotonous white. The highway we were passing on seemed to split the community in two parts, one side mainly residential, the other mainly commercial.. All I can remember was a gas station and a casino.
Both hit my memory hard. I can remember the faces of the people milling around. At the station, I remember seeing an old man, an amputee, using a crutch to assist in his movement. There was a young boy next to him. I saw no emotion in either. In fact, I saw no emotion on the faces of anyone in the area, but rather, that fatigue which we know to erase it.
My dad told me when I was a kid briefly about how alcohol and gambling had contributed into skewering the Native populations into decline. Whether that’s the full truth or not, I can remember seeing no other forms of commercialized entertainment but that casino.

Slavery was a great atrocity too. However, the people survived it. The culture survived. They were lucky, and they went on to contribute greatly to this country, and carve out their own niche in Americana.
The natives?
They’re all but gone. An entire race of people, wiped out. A cultural system, not just a culture, with its own religions, art, philosophies, governances, histories, and loves wiped out. What generations of American inventors, and explorers, and scientists, and businessmen, and artists were doomed never to see the sun rise above the prairies, the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachians?
I’m not here to inquire about what was right or wrong in the past. I don’t care what Jackson or Custer or Columbus did. I care about what happened after. I care about a people.

I just know that American values of freedom and individuality came into question when I drove through a sunny Nebraska reservation one day.
We are not black, or white, or jew, or protestant, or catholic…
or Sioux, or Crow, or Creek, or Shawnee, or Sierra, or Comanche, or Apache, or Mohawk without first being Americans.
The greatest evil we can commit as a nation is not living up to the ideals that we have spent centuries laboring to build; for every one of us is distinctly American.

The twin evils of Slavery and Native American Genocide.
It’s hard to say one of these is worse than the other. On the one hand, you have the attempted extermination of Native Americans. On the other hand, you have the systematic enslavement, torture, rape, and murder of African Americans.
Both are horrible. Both are shameful. The effects of both still haunt America to this day.

I'll add another that many folks don't take as such a big deal (they didn't teach, or even mention it when I went to high school), the Incarceration of the Japanese American Citizens. These were American birthright citizens and we incarcerated them because of their shared generational old ancestory with folks who attacked us. Japanese citizens attacked the United States of America, not Japanese Americans.
Those are American citizens and we have identification tags hanging from them just like we accuse the Germans of doing. Our camps were more human than the German Concentration camps, but we still locked these folks up without any charge.

Is the United States the worst developed country in which to live?
Compared to other developed countries, I would say yes, The lack of universal healthcare, the amount of gun violence, the lack of a living minimum wage and the high cost of a college education with a small percentage of grants to pay for college leaving students to take out loans which lead to a high amount of student debt. This country likes to screw people and make things as hard as possible on the average American, Im speaking as a American citizen

A Canadian friend about 30 yrs ago said of the US “ …..There's more than 200m people in '’middle America' ( USA) that probably don't lock their doors at night, have never seen a gun crime, have great medical cover and don't do drugs".
He was no huge fan of the US — he was trying to alx me to the fact that the media is purely a vehicle designed to sell soap, apples and push an agenda.
And looking back to 1990 the media seems rather quaint and even child like in their story telling compared to today.

What is the worst city you have visited in the USA and why?
Detroit Michigan. Stayed in Novi 3 days and went to the North American Car Show in downtown Detroit. The show was fine but when I went walking around later I felt like I was in a Movie about the Apocalypse. Once outside downtown Detroit every street I saw had abandoned homes that looked like there had been a War there. It was disturbing to see a City in such terrible shape. I used to hear people make fun of Detroit and thought they were just exaggerating. Then I saw Detroit for myself. It is truly bad.

Is the USA really as bad as the people on Quora say it is?
Yes.
Just this morning, I came face-to-face with the horror that is living in the U.S. My local grocery store, which I can see from my house, was out of my favorite kind of coffee creamer.
“This is bullshit!” I shouted while staring at the 200 other creamer choices. I was forced to decide if I wanted to just get hazelnut creamer instead of vanilla, some other brand of vanilla that isn’t my normal brand, or drive to the next grocery store which is about half a mile away.
I started to wonder where it all went wrong with the country. This wasn’t the future I was promised when I was a child. A future where I had to make these kinds of tough decisions.
Then, fortunately, I found a way out of my problem. They did have my usual creamer, just in a much larger container than I normally get. So now I have this huge container of my favorite creamer in my fridge. Sure, it cost a little more, but it was worth it.

What is the worst thing about the USA economy?
That it favors the bold. If you hesitate or if you aren’t driven, the American dream isn’t going to be achievable under the current economic structure. It’s not that you can’t do fabulously well here. My husband and I do well. But we do well because we have no compunction about moving to any part of the US where we can find the highest paying / most secure income. One of the reason why immigrants to the US seem to have a really good time doing well in this economy isn’t just their general plucky spirit and hard work, but the fact that they’ve already moved a bazillion miles from home, moving again inside the US? Meh, no biggie.
Americans here mostly want to be close to family, buy a house and grow roots. The problem is that the American economy is now so fluid that you just need to be able to move (unless you’re like a surgeon or a state trooper). Buying a house, while not a bad idea, isn’t always the best idea. Once you’re tied down to a home and kids, you’re pretty much fucked if the economy in the area moves. This is why I won’t buy a house for a long time. I have no problem paying to break a lease and moving to where the good jobs are. Not everybody has that desire or means.
