I asked some of Sudanese students a while back if they'd consider going back now things weren't so violent, they said it's not possible to return. If people over there found out they'd been in Australia while they were fighting for their country's freedom, they'd get killed
Another student from ages past came from Iraq after the first American War. He was part of the failed Kurdish political resistance movement so he had a price on his head. He was pretty much alone in Australia for about 8 years before the second American War made it possible to return home. He said sitting in his mum's kitchen trying to explain why they needed to get the police involved in an inter family dispute (to prevent it becoming a family blood feud) he didn't understand how much he had changed until his uncle said “shut up, you Australians don't understand” .

Don't forget Mexico has even more draconian laws with respect to immigration that the infamous Arizona immigrant law.In Arizona the immigrant must commit a crime to be asked papers, in Mexico if one policeman decides they can send you back to Central America without probable cause.Many of my fellow nationals tried to emigrate there and were send back (I m venezuelan).

So world history started in 1492 - wrong.Europe was invaded by the North Africans, took 700 years to fight them off.Southern Europe invaded by the Turks.North Asian tribes, Attila the Hun and later Genghis Khan invaded Europe from the east.They were lucky to survive, such was all world history.

Like most ‘great’ civilisations/empires you’ll find they’re mostly built on the conquered forgotten shoulders of the down trodden.From ancient Rome, Egypt, China, North America and the great African empires to the more recent European colonial empires.Let’s not forget how most religions were spread too.
After two world wars started by principle member Germany, perhaps for good reason the EU doesn't have an army and relies on the US, NATO and its military members (UK and now only France) for (mostly nuclear) defence.Consequently It’s pretty toothless.
The EU should take a lot of responsibility for what has happened in Syria and Libya.
