There are three key ways, all involve water.

An actual bidet. It''s a bit costly as it''s a separate structure in your bathroom. Or some people get the fancy toilets with buttons and stuff that have it included.

The next is more ideal, a pressurized jet spray. Aka, health faucet. Aka, butt hose. It's just a five minute installation connecting it to the water line, then hang it over the side of the back of the toilet. No drilling, virtually no setup.

The third is best if you're in a pinch. Take a measuring cup and fill it about halfway with water. Lean forwards, pour the water slowly down the spout with your right hand, and, as the water hits your butt, use your left to help the water remove the debris/poop.

It may seem gross at first glance, but I promise you it's super effective and you will not have poop on your hand when you finish. You're not scratching the poop off, you're just helping the water remove everything.

Think about when you wash dishes. If you use a dry sponge, a lot will be left on the sponge. If you use a wet sponge with running water, most will flow naturally leaving minimal leftovers on the sponge.

I think in time you'll grow to prefer it. I certainly have.

I was thinking about getting one of those bidet toilet seats, but a butt hose would also work. I’ve come to realize that our toilet paper custom is sort of inferior and gross, and I’m sure many Indians are horrified.

Ravi Shankar to Caroline Von Zlonkensteen
Most of us when going abroad can adjust to the food, climate, work culture, loneliness, anything …….. but not TP. We need the butt hose and nothing else comes close.

Anand Nyamdavaa to Caroline Von Zlonkensteen
The hose works well in warm climate only. Unless your cold water is luke warm its a miserable experience

Caroline Von Zlonkensteen to Anand Nyamdavaa
Yeah, it’s ice cold in Seattle in the wintertime, and basically cold all year long. That’s why some people have those fancy bidet toilets which warm the water and the seat for you.

Manashi Sarkar to Caroline Von Zlonkensteen
My Airbnb hosts in Stockholm simply connected the jet spray with the wash basin tap. You simply turn on the wash basin tap with whatever temperature of water you prefer!

It's not fancy. Costs barely $300 here in Australia, meaning it is half that in the US. Best thing ever.

Indicus to Caroline Von Zlonkensteen
Honestly, it's not a big deal at all. I live in the Seattle region too (Eastside to be more precise) and this Indian butt doesn't mind ice cold water hosing it down every day. The first winter it was a shock to the system but I'd much rather have a clean and powdered butt (okay, joking on the second part) than worry about cold water splashing down my nether cheeks. Of course, I'm not that fancy to be worth the extra $1000 to pay the plumber to extend the hot water line and get an extra hi-fi Japanese toilet seat bidet attachment.

Chakra to Anand Nyamdavaa
I understand your agony. But there is a solution. By installing a T-shut off valve which mixes hot and cold water you can be kind to your bum. Go to the local Plumbing store to get Hot- Cold mixer shut off valve.

John L. Robinson to Chakra
In the USA most all homes are built/equipped with a central hot-water heater/tank and then the pipes through the home sends the heated water to the kitchen, clothes washing machine, and bathroom sinks, baths, and showers. Between uses the hot water in the pipes cools down to ambient temperature. In my apartment, when I turn on the water in my shower it takes about a minute or more for the heated water from the tank to replace the ambient water in the pipes and then also heat the pipes until there is an established flow of consistently warm/hot water reaching my shower.
My shower is equipped with a Hot-Cold mixer valve. If I had that type of setup to clean my stinky backside I’d be wasting 2 to 3 gallons (7 to 11 liters) of water per “cleanup” just waiting for the water to be “comfortable”. Btw, I live close to Seattle.

Nikhil Arora to John L. Robinson
But even if the water is ice cold your butt will not be frozen in an instant. We Indians use the same chilled water we get through our pipes for everything. Some ruggedness is always good for your body and don’t worry you’ll be fine.

Ahmed Elghobashy
All across the middle east too, when I went to live in berlin i was horrified with the reality of not having a “cleanser" as we call it, but I was already prepared with some sort of portable hand spray called “freshbuzz”.
A friend just drilled 3 holes to the top cover of a plastic bottle and filled it with water, and whenever he squeezed water would sprout it strong enough to shake poop off the body but bot too strong to actually hurt you.
Of course these things are very personal and 3every one had their own, but a handheld cleaner like option 2 is much better.

Oh yes, I can imagine. It is gross. Some people carry moistened wipes to use in addition to paper. But then they flush them and it’s not great for the pipes.

Yes I’ve seen one of those bidet toilet seats here in Montreal and my first reaction was that it’s really an overkill. The bum gun is the best or you smaller installations of bidet that fit over the toilet and are really not expensive at all.
I’ve done it in the past but now I simply refuse to clean my butt with paper. My choice is option 3 and if you know how to do that you can navigate toilets outside home too by carrying a bottle. Lol.

I promise you Nigerians roar with laughter at this toilet paper craze in the West. Even those who live in the West don't get it either. It's just paper. No big deal. Any paper would do, if you must have paper. Otherwise, use water. In fact, some of us can't be bothered to buy toilet paper ordinarily. It's easily affordable, but it's hardly as effective as water.
It's so hilarious that it's such a big deal to anyone anywhere.

The issue is that very few people in India use the butt hose properly. Each and every public toilet I have been in has had a soaking wet floor as people are spraying that damn thing everywhere, so essentially, the detritus of whatever the butt hose washed off is on the floor, and inevitably, on other body parts. So now, you may have a clean arse, but your feet and legs are probably covered in butt crap. But, in my rather extensive experience of India, this goes very well with the national ethos of being seen to be doing, rather than actually doing something that could help.

Manish Aggarwal
it is very hygienic to use a butt hose or a mug/ cup as it is the best way of cleaning your butt hole and nothing is left stuck to your butt hole .

Thanks for this vitally important post.
I have a lot of admiration for the sense of innovation, industry, scientific temper and problem solving ability of the Western world but I still cannot understand the toilet paper thingie despite being cognizant of the cultural differences.
I have borderline OCD on personal hygiene but I've always had problems with the same issue in European Airports. No spray, no bidets….Jesus!

Which is why you don’t eat with or exchange money or other items in much of Asia. The left hand is unclean.

Mahesh Manjunath to Barry White
That is why you wash your hand after using it.

Ankita to Barry White
The left hand isn't unclean. People WASH their hands with soap! What you don't understand is that the left hand is considered inauspicious NOT unclean, although because of the same reasons.
Even centuries ago, when there weren't any soap, people use to scrub their hands with soil and ash and then wash with water to get it clean.

Ayana Vini to Ankita
Soaps and shampoo were introduced to west by Indian traders, and at that time is was very common among indians but limited to western elites. Also, there's countless mentions of Sandalwood or Turmeric soaps been used by Indians in stories.

Arvindh Subramoniam to Ayana Vini
Yeah, but those could not afforded by the common people in India either. It was for the wealthy.

Ayana Vini to Arvindh Subramoniam
If we even try to learn foreign travellers accounts on Indian kingdoms, say Kalinga far in East(the present day Odisha) they had farmers who used to export their produces towards southeast and an average farmer in their kingdom used to have doors and windows made up of gold in their house. Farmers in indian history were not poor like west used to have.
Indians mostly had sizeable numbers of middle class in their respective kingdom because of the stable military and economy until it faced 1000’s years of foreign invasions and their temporary rules. Infact each states in india has countless festivals and the type of celebrations they have, or just the food variety it involves simply shows their history wasn't poor. The value of rupees was still more than dollar when Brits left India.
The idea that humans were civilized or became rich recently because of west is a religious belief from churches and Christianity. Elitism and slavery in India only came after mughals followed by Britishers.

Odii Ariwodo to Barry White
In my culture in Eastern Nigeria (and, as far as I know, elsewhere in Nigeria), the left hand is historically regarded as the toilet hand, so we don't shake hands with it, offer things with it, receive things with it, etc. But that is just a mark of respect. The right hand is literally called “the food hand" in the Igbo tongue. Interestingly, “the right hand of fellowship” appears to be an ancient cultural phenomenon in Europe and the Middle East (the Bible uses that phrase in Greco-Roman times). So, perhaps it is actually a more universal thing than you may be supposing.
I wouldn't therefore put it the way you just did, like the hand is literally unclean. It's just a way of showing respect in general. After all, even if you use toilet paper, you have to use a hand to do it. Traditionally, it would still be the toilet hand. In fact, I was raised to always use my left hand to wipe my butt, and we used toilet paper growing up. Still, it was highly offensive to accept or offer things to anyone, especially your elders with your left hand.
And before you ask, toilet paper has been part of Nigerian culture for a long time.

Prashanth Krishnan Ranganathan to Odii Ariwodo
It is the same in India - we too consider the left hand as the toilet hand and never shake hands or eat with it.
And the right hand is considered the food hand. Everything auspicious is done with the right.
So yes - the hand system is probably universal.
Don’t ask what will left-handers do - they’re too few to consider changing the norm.
