I love how Chinese royal history is like a reality tv show.

"No matter how we feel about him, Chinese people cannot tell our history without speaking of him" - I can relate to this a great deal as a British person. When reflecting on British history you just have to kinda accept that there were a lot of awful people, the key isn't to pretend they didn't exist, it's to learn from them and reflect on all the things they did, good or bad.
Oliver Cromwell is a good example of this, on the one hand he made the unx into a strong power in Europe, he changed attitudes of privilege in society which are still reflected today, he helped pave the way for parliamentary democracy in its infancy. On the other hand, he himself was a dictator and would probably hate what the UK has become, he was also a mass murderer and is despised in Ireland with good reason. He was a religious theocrat who wanted to outlaw anything deemed mildly sinful much like American evangelists or Islamic fundamentalists today.
He was a horrible, horrible human being but he did have an interesting life and there is much we can learn from him.

HERO (2002) is a really beautiful film that loosely tells the tale of an assassination attempt on the first emperor of China!
Really good movie if you haven’t seen it.
It takes a lot of inspiration from the film Rashomon by Kurosawa.

It's so interesting to me that China's feudal era happened 1500 years before Europe's. Qin Shi Huang's unification of China arguably marks the beginning of the oldest surviving nation state in the world.

one thing that really messes me up while studying history is like how many cultures are out there that are SO SO SO old, it almost feels like my country is a baby near these big guys with like 500 years of war, scxts from 5000 years ago and stuff like that daangg imagine going to school and having to learn so many things about your birthplace, my country was invaded like in 1500s and I barely learned all subjects at school about that

Ginger Gander
I first heard about this man when we were told about the terracotta warriors and we learned about how all of the soldiers were unique and their faces were most likely all made by hand and I thought that that was the coolest thing ever to have all that made just to protect you in death, so cool to find out more about him!

Part of me is proud for recognizing every c-drama image shown without reading the descxtion. This guy's life was really wild which is probably why it's so popular to adapt it. Part of me wants to know if the tree general story really is real & if so, what happened to the tree?

I am a simple woman. I see Xiran post a history video and I will drop everything to watch it.

This is an incredible story, and it's and other major historical events in Chinese history and East Asian history General need to be studied and discussed more often in the Western Hemisphere. People across the world are far more alike than different, and viewing the commonalities in human history is a great way of teaching people that. In much the same way that there are only so many different ways to make flatbread or only so many ways to create an effective fighting style, there are only so many ways to brutally conquer your enemies and create a nation out of a collection of feuding states. That being said, the first emperor did it with style.

Dieezah Translator-Songwriter
That scene about him killing his half-brothers in this brutal manner did make its way into at least one film inspired by his life... I remember seeing such a movie back in the early 2000s and it really was too gruesome to have been included just for shock value...

Ahhhh this is a happy coincidence!
I was asked recently about how to depict Chinese war strategizing may look like (war council rooms, maps, figurines to mark movements etc), and I genuinely could’ve sworn I’d seen cdramas and movies depict scenes like that. I couldn’t think of any though, but browsing around, I found some examples in the 2009 live-action Mulan film…and in videos about Qin Shi Huang!

One of them was a CGTN documentary, which re-enacts scenes from Qin Shi Huang’s life, and the second one was a web-drama about Qin Shi Huang. So while China’s first emperor definitely had little chill with all the conquering and warring, I am grateful he had so much war I could find some representation of war strategizing with maps and everything.
I’ve actually been meaning to rewatch the documentary properly after I was scrubbing through it for war strategizing scenes, as it’s been a while since I learned about Qin Shi Huang’s life in detail. So I appreciate this video discussing him too, and I look forward to more ancient Chinese history videos!
Also truly do enjoy the drama of all of this… The guy who was famous for being absolutely hung, the way Qin Shi Huang is basically an anime protagonist irl, the insane assassination attempts with even childhood friends to enemies…and of course, all the wars.

Ying Zheng: "Do you know what I do to my brothers?"

I've always wanted to ask if you would talk about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but have always been too nervous to ask. You mentioning the Han in this video made me want to try asking :) I've read the entire book and have always been fascinated by that story, and would love to hear what you think of it or if you have interesting insight in to it as a Chinese person. Thank you again for these wonderful videos, I always learn so much and you really are a true story teller :)

just a note for anyone who's confused about the "trading children" bit, this was a practice where families would swap children with other families so they didn't have to eat their own kids. It happened depressingly often in Chinese history.

As a westerner who was never taught much (if any) history outside of Europe, colonial US, and like a lesson or two on Egypt because mummies, I really love these videos!

The Qin were masters in bronze casting, making high quality weapons which would outrank the other six states’ weapons. The weapons found at the Terracotta Army site show quality check marks by Lu BuWei and some even have been used in battle, proven by dents in them. They even are still sharp to this day.

I remember seeing a documentary about him as a child and being absolutely fascinated, but also terrified because I was definitely too young to see all the violence included in the re-enactment parts.

i’ve not watched the video yet but i just want to say, i love your channel so so much! i love learning about ancient history from all over the world but i really enjoy the fact china has so much documented history spanning over such a long time. i also love the way you explain the stories of these people, it personalises them so much and gives them character, compared to if i just read about them. so thank you

I'm really impressed and amazed how well the records were kept and preserved for all these years.

I have just binged tf out of your channel, and I wish you had been my tour guide when I went on a work trip to Xi'an. Your presentation is so good, and so well researched.
also a cool vid would be one about that super famous water goddess that had her worship banned. I can't remember her name off the top of my head, but I used to live in Fuzhou(saw iconography in some places there), and she had a shrine dedicated to her in Putian. If anything a curious tale to read about if you are every bored

I never clicked on anything so fast in my life.Even wrote my BA thesis on why and how everyone was wrong about "the burning of books and burying of scholars" (no, I didn't dispute that both were pretty bad) and how Qin Shihuang's anti-Confucianism was srsly blown out of proportion by later generations of historians. Heck, I went to Northern Shaanxi twice because of Fusu and Meng Tian.
tl,dr: The Qin are one of my favourite things in the world and a fascinating story and an ideal topic for you to sink your teeth into, given what an amazing storyteller you are.

I would argue that most empires in China at that time wanted to conquer all others 6 realms, as shown by them employing legalism scholars in country reform, they just didn’t have the geographical advantages of Qin. Moreover, to say Qin Xi Huang himself is the absolute key would undermine the efforts of his ancestors. The history book summed up the rise of Qin as: using the effort of six generations. Qin became a formidable player because of all the extremely dedicated leaders and their geographical advantages. Arguably Qin Xi Huang is just the executioner.

In the manga Record of Ragnarok, Qin Shi Huang is known as humanities greatest king. And is such an empathetic person that seeing another person being injured will cause him to have that injury as well. He fights Hades.

Just a few days ago I watched Fallen Civilization's video on the Han dynasty, and it starts off by going over Qin Shi Huang's life. That video is really quite good, but doesn't go into quite as much detail into Qin Shi Huang's early life as this one does.

Honestly after speedrunning lectures about Chinese history watching your videos are is a breath of a fresh air lmao, thank you so much for those the humor is amazing!!

So you're telling me Hero isn't a totally accurate account of how awesome he was and how everything he did was totally justified because it brought unending stability to the country?

I loved the video... I'm literally obsessed with chinese culture, though I'm not chinese myself, and I'd still want to learn more about this beautiful culture.
I would ask you, if you take suggestions, to maybe do a video about Yandi, the Flame Emperor(s)? I'm definitely ignorant, I don't know if there's less or more to say, but I'm really curious about that.

Jen and I always look forward to your Chinese history videos. It's amazing to hear accurate history with a sense of humor. Most documentary narrators are boring.

Honestly, I just feel really, really sad for Ying Zheng. What a genuinely horrific life, no wonder he didn't trust anyone. I want to give him a hug.

Just to add more context to the history relating to the state of Qin. 900 years later in the Three Kingdom era, the Shu prime minister Zhuge Liang in effort to strengthen the kingdom of Shu attempted to conquer northwestern region of Wei, in an attempt to recreate the original borders of the kingdom of Qin with its geographical advantage and rich resources to once again unify China, sadly he passed away before his dream was achieved and Wei eventually conquered Shu, and renamed to Jin.

3 kings of Qin dying within 4 years... is that the context of the number 4 being associated with death and misfortune? (Edit: Apparently not, it just sounds like the word "death" in Chinese/Mandarin/Cantonese/etc)

Brilliant video, I hope maybe one day you could cover the Chu-Han Contention after the fall of the Qin Dynasty. I wonder if Xiang Yu beat Liu Bang not only would the Han Dynasty not exist but Imperial China would have been some temporary anomaly in the history of a disunited China.

Thanks for this! I play Civilization 6 a lot, and Qin Shi Huang is one of the leaders. I like to learn about all of it, especially when it's basically a very juicy soap opera.

Lmfao, I'm loving this so far, not done yet. I had to stop and comment though, that replacing Wang Jian with Li Xin was such a good tactical move, if 600k was really almost all the forces, and with a 200k man force, he basically baited the rebellion into existence. Anyway, I'm going to finish now
Edit: Wow, just wow! What a brilliant and diligent guy! Lazy, no, but mentally disturbed to the point of conquering everything and reforming an entire cultural way of life? Brilliant! This is such a good video, thanks for sharing your effort and work with us, and your knowledge! Appreciate it!

The land that would make up China is a amazing place with each area having their own culture and some of the older dynasties cultures may have been lost but really that’s how China has been peoples taking over ethers and their culture being blessed by the Azure sky and their culture beings prominent and magnanimous China is a amazing land of cultural heritage that stretches back thousands of years and though some culture is replaced by ethers the mindset of the Han and ether peoples are still strong

I go to a Chinese private school in Southeast Asia and I'm very surprised to find out that he did more than just 焚书坑儒 (burn books, bury Confucian scholars). Our history books didn't describe him as well as you did. I have a new perception of him now!

I first became familiar with Qin Shi Huang from the attrocities that is The Mummy III and honestly, Jet Li's potrayal of the dragon emperor is the only redeeming quality of that movie, but ultimately because the movie as a whole is just... boring, i kinda forget about all of it, until recently i read a manga series called "Record of Ragnarok" where the entire premise of the series is 13 historical figure from throughout the history has to fought in a 1 vs 1 tournament against gods from various pantheons to ensure humanities survival, and the latest human to fought were Qin Shi Huang who had to fight Greece's god of the Underworld Hades, and i'm telling you, the author made Qin Shi Huang the coldest, most badass character yet and so i've spent a few weeks studying the character whenever i had the chance... so thank you for helping me cause i take it there's a lot of version of Qin's story, from my personal findings, i take it the western historians really love to paint him as this heartless, villainous emperor with no redeeming qualities, while some eastern historians describe his as a rather tragic figure
