High schools in Indonesia are surrounded by walls or fences with gates monitored by security guards around the clock. The condition was the same when I was still in high school and now to make things worst for the kids who often come late, they add CCTV cameras to monitor who goes in and out so attempting to sneak in when you come late is useless, unless you can make yourself invisible to the security guards and cameras.

In Indonesia, if you are a high school student and you come late one of these will happen to you. No. 3 is mostly likely happening to you.

1.School management won’t let you in. The gate is closed. Don’t be happy because now you have a day off because you are considered to cut class and your parents will be called.

2.School management will let you in but you will be reprimanded first then after that you can go to your class.

3.School management will let you in but … you will be punished first before you can go to your class. If you are a male student, you might be told to do push up not in the teacher’s room but in the school’s yard where everyone can see what happens to you. You can be punished to clean the school’s yard or clean the toilets which is really unpleasant thing to do. Another form of punishment for you if you come late is you stand before the flag post and salute the flag.

I graduated high school about twenty years ago and let me tell you that that arriving late in high school was unpleasant thing and something that I tried to avoid because coming late was punishable and it is now still punishable.

Don’t come late

I am German so I was never late to class but what happens when it is not your fault like the Bus was stuck in traffic? Will they get informed if like a group of students took the same Bus and the Bus is late or do all the students get punished? I get why they are doing it if the door keeps open every few minutes all the students get destructed but sometimes things happen life is not always linear

Andrianto Hadi to Nicole Sansone
When I was in high school, many kids used public transportation like bus and when the bus broke down and and you were the only one who took the bus and you got late, teacher won’t tolerate. Bam ! Punishment was given no matter how good you tried to explain what really happened. However, different story when many students took same bus and they were late because something happened to the bus. Teachers might tolerate them. But if it happened again, same students with same bus again, bam ! Punishment was given.
In Indonesia, school hours start very early in the morning at around 07.00 and 07.30 am.This applies to all schools in the country. This policy is intended to avoid students getting trapped in rush hours starting at 07.45 am until 09.30 am.

Thies Schaper to Andrianto Hadi
Any chance to camp on the school property, avoiding being late EVER ? Maybe boarding schools are the solution, giving the Education Department a chance for "brainwashing” 24/7, cutting out parents and other distractions.

Andrianto Hadi to Thies Schaper
Almost all public schools in Indonesia don’t have dorms facilities only expensive private schools and faith based schools. The only public schools with dorms are military schools and some state high schools with military management. Brainwashing program at schools had been abolished since President Soeharto was deposed. I myself experienced it because when I was in middle school, it was Soeharto’s regime. Trust me, you don’t want to go to school with brainwashing program. I remembered, the teachers used to say “ don’t trust foreigners ! , don’t trust western countries, “ now you will not find such material in any school in Indonesia. However, the Ministry of Education still controls the education strictly, one of the policy that does not change since 70 years ago is the standard uniforms for elementary school, middle school and high school.

Thies Schaper to Andrianto Hadi
Interesting information.Thanks.Much appreciated.

Arzo Noutnaruz to Andrianto Hadi
You know that school is a brainwashing institution, right? They’re trying to change you to prepare for adult life. But what they do is basically the same thing.

The rules regarding coming late to school in my school is quite lax. I study in a public school in Indonesia. Your parents will only be called when you’re late more than 3 times. And if you’re late you’ll only miss the first period and only fill a “late absent”. After that, the teachers will let you go without any punishments.

Seeing those girls at the gate begging to enter, with an angry security guard staring at them, I can imagine a lot of…kinky and inappropriate ways this thing could play out.

Andrianto Hadi to Lonely Cantonese Sith Lord
Here I show you same real scenes that happens to students who come late in Indonesia and they are not allowed to enter school.

Manny Ng to Andrianto Hadi
I’m sorry not being familiar with Indonesian culture and education, but I wanna ask: What is the point of locking students out? It seems counterintuitive that they’re there to get education even when they’re being late, and the school tries to prevent that. Imo, there should be a different kind of punishment to prevent students from being late.

Andrianto Hadi to Manny Ng
When students are locked out, thing does not go easy on them. They can’t simply go to malls or to parks to have free time for one day. They will be regarded to cut the class and that will influence their scores.

Hiraeth W to Manny Ng
'discipline' is what they always say but it contradict everything about being a student. I get that you have to give them a lesson but it's ridiculous.
I once got locked out in middle school for a solid thirty minutes before they gave me my punishment, which was to sweep and mop the infarmary, and when I'm done, they then made me clean the garden. I lost two HOURS of study though thankfully the teacher understands and went to talk to whoever gave me my punishment.
And then there was high school. Once you're late, you ain't going to get in. That's the policy for the first two years of being in that school before they changed it. My friends litterally had to climb tall walls aligned with those sharp wires, thankfully there are some spots that don't have those wires. A student was even confronted to leave the school for the day because they were found out they climbed their way in.
What's the point in being a student if you're not even allowed to study just because you're five minutes late? The school frickin start at 7 am for goodness sake

Rati C. Nugraheni to Hiraeth W
The student didnt get locked all day, they usually missed “upacara” monday ceremony before school start, after upacara ended usually we have 10–15 minutes before the next subject start, in those minutes the lates will get punishment and disciplines, if it's not monday they usually requires to miss the first subject and get punishment instead, but can get in class in the second subject
But if they late like an hour or more... Well the student has no shame

Hiraeth W to Hiraeth W
It varies how school deals with this. My middle school does this every schoolday, whether it is Monday or not. I'm Indonesian too if you are mistaken, I live in a remotely small island named Batam. The rules are, we have time before the first subject starts which was an hour after the gate closes to punish those who are late. The particular teacher who is assigned for today to punish them took it to absurdity, as I stated, I miss two hours of the first subject which leaves one more before we move on to the next subject. Usually the punishment ended at the very least half a hour, thirty minutes. Then they are dismissed and still probably has a few minutes left to get to class before the fist subject starts. I.. I know I'm late for class for two hours but was it really my fault?? I was late to the gate for just ten minutes, my punishment takes more time. It's too farfetched to call a person shameful, some of them has reasons

Daniel Chew to Hiraeth W
The reason is because if the were no consequence, people like me will eventually be 2 hour late. Regularly.
You have to draw the line somewhere.
If you allow a 15 minutes grace period, we will be 20 minutes late. Then, people like you would ask for an additional 15 minutes. With a 30 minutes grace period, me and my friends would be 40 minutes late.
Rinse, repeat.

Itamae Mikazuki to Manny Ng
I believe it to be some kind of a punishment orientation that will eventually discipline the students to be punctual and respectful of other people’s time. If you were ever in that position, you will understand how this works and will really say that this system of punishment really works.

Reivax Alexander
This punishment doesn’t apply to private schools, they can choose what they want.
This is me who graduated from all three-stages of private school.
But my brother and sister are at state-school, so they do get locked off like in the image…

Andrianto Hadi to Reivax Alexander
I went to public high school and personally I witnessed the punishment happened to my friend. Well I can’t speak for private high school, since I never went there. I don’t know, I just take random pics.

A Arramzy
I know some might think this is stupid, rude, or even primitive. But in my personal opinion, this is great. Students especially High-School students are bunch of teenagers, and like any teens they could be annoying, rude, disrespectful, horny, sassy, obnoxious, etc.
This is great, because it teaches them how to behave, act, be respectful, well mannered, obey the rules, etc. but most importantly discipline, and comradery.
Yes, when i was a student it is annoying you have to wake up early, and all. But looking back at it again, it was a lot of fun. I actually missed the old times again now. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Some of the best high-schools in Indonesia are strict, both state-owned, and private-owned. Schools like SMAN are favourite as well as military/ministry of defence schools like Taruna Nusantara.

Andrianto Hadi to A Arramzy
I could assure you that back in my high school time years ago, the discipline level was 150 %. The teachers could freeze us just by staring at us and we didn’t dare to talk back at them.

Andy Stout to Andrianto Hadi
Today, teachers are afraid to say “boo” in the classroom. Students have so many “rights” it’s almost like a teacher has to ask permission to speak. And everything a teacher says can be misconstrued to be interpreted as being “offensive” to somebody!
I miss teaching, but I wouldn’t want to go back to it now.

Casey Miller
It really depends on the school though, the consequences described above usually only happen in local schools, meanwhile in Indonesia we also have a lot of private international schools (like mine). In here the school would only write down our names and it will go into our report in the "lateness" section.

Andhiko Artawijaya to Casey Miller
I went to public school and the school did the same thing as yours.

Itamae Mikazuki
I thought at first, wow, this is in the Philippines!, but reading through it it was Indonesia. I am kinda happy to see that there is another thing added on my list about what makes the Philippines and Indonesia similar. we really can be called brothers/sisters. Same face, same building structure, just a different home country.

Chris
What do you think of this?

A Arramzy to Chris
Fun actually, looking back at it now its a lot of fun. Not so much back then when i was a student lmao.

I’m from Malaysia but had similar experience… for my whole school years.
I don’t why but there was like a curse, a curse that forbade me from coming to school early, despite my house being quite close to the school. I did sometime arrived in time or even earlier, but coming late was so normal my parents even considered not driving me to school. Like any other kids, of course I took up on that offer :p
Anyhow, about the last two years of my schooling, I decided being late wasn’t an excuse to skip school. So I went to school, late or not. I think I kinda made a name for myself among the teachers. It was to the point I was brought to the counsellor!
My only saving grace was, I believe, my good grades. I was the “bad boy” that outperformed most of my peers. I wonder if the school would’ve kicked me out if not for that. I mean, they did threaten me, telling me it would show on my results like a note saying “this student was a delinquent” or something to that effect(but they never delivered on that, thankfully).
