Who do you usually spend holidays with?
I spend Christmas with family and close friends — my dad passed away nine years ago, so we drive over and pick up my mom. She comes over, as do my daughter and her fiance (they both live out of town for college). My son still lives at home with my husband and me, and then we have a close friend that spends the holidays with us every year named Mike. It's a beautiful time to relax and enjoy the company of people who make each other laugh and relax.
I feel truly blessed at this time of year.

What do you like to do on holiday in a strange town?
Get to know it of course. When I arrive, I spend the first day or two just wandering around. This is when you truly get to know the place by looking in the shops, spotting architecture, visiting the restaurants and bars.
Nine times out of ten, if the town is in Turkey, you will end up chatting with the locals because Turkish people are naturally hospitable, and it is so easy to strike up conversations with strangers. Locals are also the best source of information to find out what makes a town tick.
Then I will do all the tourist attractions and / or must-see activities. By the time I leave, it is no longer a strange place.

Who did you spend most time with when you were young?
When I was 6 years old my two best friends lived just up the street and they lived across from each other. One of them lived right behind the elementary school and he and I would walk over to his house after school in first grade. The three of us still keep in touch via Facebook.

How are you spending this holiday?
I just turned 88, am disabled (can’t walk - spinal issues), live in assisted living - hate it - mostly dementia and I am super high functioning and still work and take care of myself 100%. Family and friends are gone. Spoke to two far away friends on the phone and enjoyed a quiet night with my kitty. Very lonely and so many memories but I am used to it. Christmas day and New Years are just regular days. Christmas eve is hard for me.

What should I do in holidays?
1.Pack up your bags and go somewhere new.
At first you won’t feel like it. Leaving the comfort of your house and that too during the holidays! But there won’t be a better time to step out of your comfort zone. Explore your locality. Nearby cities. There isn’t a better way to fall in love with life than travelling!
2. Cook dinner for your family once a week.
Try cooking something new for dinner. Give a hell of a scare to your family members. Who knows, you might turn out to be an excellent chef!
3. Learn something new.
A language, to play an instrument, a sport or anything that’s always been at the back of your mind.
4. Watch.Everything.
Binge-watch all your favorite TV Shows. Movies. Anime. Everything.
5. Sleep. A lot.
Can’t stress this enough. :D
No matter how much you plan your holidays, they end up being a chaotic mess. Beautiful nonetheless. So go with the flow. Travel around for some days. Lie down under your cozy blanket and read for some days. Dabble around with new hobbies. Writing, blogging, photography…anything. Or try out interesting online courses.

What is your favorite holiday and why?
Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday because the day will always be inextricably lixed with a wonderful memory from high school.
My brother and I attended the largest high school in our state (at that time) --- over 3500 kids. This happened my junior year, so my brother would have been a freshman.
Every year, the Keyettes (a service sorority) sold carnations to raise money. They set up a table in the cafeteria right after Christmas break and took orders for five weeks.
For fifty cents, you got a carnation (red, pink or white) delivered by a Keyette to whomever you wanted during Homeroom period on Valentine's Day along with a small white card from the sender.
Anyone could buy a flower and write out a card. Some girls sent them to friends. Some kids sent them to favorite teachers. But the big deal was for a boy to send one to his girlfriend, or to a girl he secretly liked.
I dated a lot, and in years past had always been certain of receiving a carnation during Homeroom from my current boyfriend. But that year I was not seeing anyone and was horribly upset that I was probably not going to get a flower. I was mortified, as only a sixteen-year old who feels that social disaster is looming can be.
The worst part was that all of my best friends had boyfriends. So I just knew I would be the only one walking the walk of shame after Homeroom, empty-handed .
On Valentine's Day morning, I begged, pleaded and cried to be allowed to miss school. My mother was unmoved by my theatrics. With a heavy heart, I boarded the school bus.
Homeroom was a fifteen minute period slotted in between first and second periods where attendance was taken and announcements were made. It was usually a place for freshening my lipstick and gossiping. The only day Homeroom was in any way socially significant was every Valentine's Day.
I thought briefly about skipping Homeroom and hiding in the bathroom. But if I missed roll call, the school would call Mother, which would only compound my troubles. So I dragged myself into the classroom, dropped into my seat, pulled out a book and pretended to be absorbed in studying.
A few seconds after the bell rang, two Keyettes in their little matching blue-and-gold sweater sets brought in two bunches of carnations and began calling out the names written on the little white cards. I could feel my cheeks burning with humiliation and remember sinking down farther, trying to make myself as inconspicuous as possible.
The girl sitting next to me, H.B. Gregory (her name was Honey Bee -- honest -- but we all called her H.B.) was called twice. She got a flower from her boyfriend and one from her field hockey coach. That's the only time in my life that I wished with all my heart that I played field hockey.
Then a miracle happened. My name was called. "Oh, joy! Rapture!" Who could it be from? Did I have a secret admirer? I raced up to claim my flower. But as soon as I returned to my desk, my name was called again. Then again. And again. A little buzz of conversation started in the classroom.
When the Keyettes left, I was holding six carnations. All with separate cards. Which meant six different senders. This was unprecedented. I felt like the most popular girl of all time.
The bell rang to dismiss Homeroom, and I fled to the bathroom and locked myself in a stall. Then I opened the little white cards stapled around the stem of each flower.
The flowers were all from my brother. On each card was written a reference to an inside family joke or a funny insult. One said: "You're soooo unpopular." One simply read: "Ass."
I carried those six flowers proudly all day long. When someone asked who they were from, I said mysteriously: "The cards weren't signed."
I found out later that my brother had used his own money (he was a notorious cheapskate -- three bucks was a movie ticket and popcorn back then) and he had watched the Keyette table over the five-week-flower sale so he never bought a flower from the same Keyette twice. So he had planned his surprise carefully. Consequently only he and I knew who the flowers were from. He never told anyone, and neither did I, not even our parents (until years later.)
To this day, that is one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. For many years I carefully saved those dried-out carnations. They finally turned to powdery dust, but I still have all six of those little cards in my jewelry box, forty-one years later.
And that's why I love Valentine's Day.
Thank you for the A2A.

每年,Keyettes(一个服务性女大学生联谊会)都会出售康乃馨来筹集资金。
坐在我旁边的女孩H.B.Gregory(她的名字叫Honey Bee——说实话——但我们都叫她H.B.)

When was the last time you went on a long vacation?
My sister and I having been going on quite a few vacations lately, I’m not sure what you mean by long, but most of ours seem to be between one and three weeks. Anything longer than that and we start to miss our kitties and homes too much. We love to travel and see new countries and people, and now is always a great time to do something that you want to do.
We are very lucky to live in an area where our neighbors are great and feel like part of our family. Our immediate neighbors have keys to our house and are welcome over at any time, so they keep an eye our on things and pets while we’re gone.
We do miss our three kitties when we travel, but our neighbors on both sides of us love our creatures and the cats feel very comfortable with them. So they spend lots of time over at our house while we’re gone and call our house their vacation place, even though it is right next door.
Our official kitty caretakers are two wonderful little girls that live a couple of houses down. They love kitties but since their mom is allergic to them, always welcome the chance to come over and play with our beasts. They are very mature and responsible for their ages, and make sure the kitties are well fed, the poop boxes stay clean, and of course the cats get lots of love and attention. I think our house has more people in it when we’re gone they when we’re home.
And of course if the internet actually works wherever we happen to be, we get regular upxes and pictures of our kitties and house.
So we’ve been going on a lot of trips lately, and especially cruises. Our last one was to Key West and Cuba in August, but that was only for five days or so. But in July we did a Trans Atlantic cruise for 18 days, which is always fun because the ship stops in Iceland and we get to spend time with our family. When we head into Akureyri, it's like a family reunx with a couple of dozen families and friends meeting us on the pier.
We’ve done several Trans Atlantic cruises and loved every one. Especially the last one when we caught a huge storm between Iceland and Greenland that tossed around the 100,000 ton ship like it was a toy. We had a great time in the storm, but unfortunately other people didn’t enjoy it quite as much as we did.
We also did a great cruise to the Baltic and Scandinavia last fall and spent a week in Iceland over the Xmas holiday. We have a great time planning trips and Anna and I have several that we are discussing, including a fall foliage cruise to Canada this fall, and a trip to Slovakia and Austria to go skiing over the Xmas holiday.
We grew up on the water, and our grandpa used to take us sailing and yaking on the fjord by our home when we were young, so we never get seasick and love the feeling of being on the ocean.
So mayhaps someday soon we’ll get tired of traveling and want to stay home for a while. That will be just fine. Because there are still plenty of places to explore close to us in New England, and as long as we can find new things and new adventures, we will be quite happy and contented.

I love to spend my vacation or holiday exploring the great outdoors.
Whether it's going on a road trip, camping in the wilderness, or even partaking in some adventure activities such as kayaking and hiking, I find great joy in immersing myself in the outdoor environment.
I find being in nature helps to slow down my hectic daily life and reconnects me to the essentials of life.
I also enjoy traveling to different countries, exploring cultures, and immersing in different languages and lifestyles.
All in all, I enjoy doing a variety of activities during my vacation, from the athletic kinds to the cultural kind, that make me feel truly alive.

What do you like to do in your holiday time?
I love to use my holiday time to explore different places. Whether it's visiting a new city, hiking, or relaxing on a beach, I always try to make the most of my time off by experiencing different cultures and cuisines, and learning about the history and traditions of different regions. I usually take my bike or car for a long ride and stops wherever i feel the need to, without having to worry about stay, food etc. Ultimately, I love the feeling of adventure and discovery that comes with exploring new places, even if they are in my own backyard.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
Home.
I’m stuck in Germany since the outbreak of the coronavirus. While I was on a business trip in Switzerland , my home country (Kosovo) closed its only airport.
I can‘t go via the land route, either: there are seven borders to cross and some of the countries I have to travel through are on lockdown.
Waiting for my turn at the bakery shop while I’m writing this.
I’m not complaining, though. Germany is a good place to be when there’s such a situation. It’s almost as if I were on holiday, only that the pubs are closed.
I hope to get a special flight next week. That would be great. Although Kosovo is by far not the most exciting place, I’ve started to miss my people there.

What are the benefits of travelling? Why is it becoming everyone's hobby?
I’m not sure if travelling is becoming everyone’s hobby. I know a fair number of people who don’t want to leave the security and familiarity of their home and community.
Travelling is enriching. It adds spice to an ordinary life. It gives us an understanding of how other people live and interact. It lets us experience other cultures, beliefs, architecture, art, and music; rather than just read about it.
Travelling has physical benefits, as well. Our experiences build more neural pathways, which can slow the onset of conditions like dementia. These experiences often build further interest in what we’ve seen, touched, tasted, smelled, and listened too, so we look for more of these; which builds more neural pathways. It gets us up and moving. This provides us exercise and stress relief. Stress relief helps lower blood pressure. A lower blood pressure is a benefit to our cardiovascular system. It also helps us with our mental health and stress-related conditions.
