I got my first passport when I was 2 years old and have had the itch to travel for all of my adult life. I save up my money for travel, and I always have a list of places I want to visit. As I have two trips planned for this month-- the first to attend my grandfather's memorial service in another state, and the second to take a meandering vacation around part of Southeast Asia-- I am reflecting on why, exactly, I have the travel itch at all.
Some things are better done in person. I would not be supporting my family as well if I attended my grandfather's service over video chat, or talked about it later on a phone call. Part of how we maintain and strengthen our connections with people is through high-bandwidth physical contact and shared experience.
It is easy to make sweeping generalizations and form negative stereotypes about Those People (you know, Them, with their strange foreign customs) when you are viewing from a distance through the filters of media, hearsay, and speculation.

I first wrote this for, Why do a lot of people speak so highly of traveling? How does it change a person?, but I think it is probably more relevant here.
There are many types of "travel" ... business travel with defined schedules and justifications for the trip, "vacation" travel spent sitting on a beach looking at boats or in a boat looking at beaches, and adventure travel based on exploration and new experiences.
I assume you're talking about adventure travel. I've done a lot of that, and I'll say three things about how it has changed me:
I gained: patience, appreciation, wisdom, perspective, and relationships
Patience - when you travel to another culture and/or country you have to deal with language barriers, new cultural norms (e.g., in many countries people expect to wait much longer for things than in the U.S...even small things like servers taking a long time to bring a check take getting used to at first), and making more mistakes...all of these require patience.
Appreciation - if you live in the Western world and are savvy enough to use Quora, you live a life of comfort, luxury, and safety compared to many people in developing countries. You can't truly appreciate what you have until you lose it...
Wisdom - you are constantly making decisions and solving problems, which gives you experience and wisdom. Also, as you explore and meet new people you discover new ideas and approaches to doing things and solving problems (or realizing things you were worried about aren't really an issue at all)...which you can later apply to your own life or when giving advice to others.
Perspective - you see the world from hundreds of new viewpoints...physically and metaphorically. In your daily life you probably spend most of your time around people generally similar to yourself (same language, color of skin, socioeconomic status, educational background, religious beliefs) ... when travelling this can change much more rapidly...and if you do it enough you'll probably at times find yourself frustrated, confused, frightened, and even a victim at least a few times, which all build perspective. (note: don't spend all your time w/ big groups of ex-pats or fellow travellers when travelling to other countries)
Relationships - Depending on how adventurous your travels, you will probably meet a lot of new people, and some of them will become friends and people you make an effort to see again. E.g., I have a friend in Chile that I have seen a couple of times since I lived there...and we met when he picked me up hitch hiking in the mountains.

I lost: Some of my original wide-eyed luster and unbridled excitement of exploring the world.
What I mean is that before you have "travelled the world", the idea of travelling the world, the fun of planning, the self-realization of "doing it" and awe in "being there", and the attempts to explain what you have experienced to others, are all new and incredibly exciting.
There will always be new adventures and places to explore, but just like other things in life, after you've been doing it for a while it is less exciting...you know, the "honeymoon" stage of a new job, relationship, house, shiny BMW, etc. People often say the anticipation is the best part, and that once you've experienced something you need something bigger and better to have the same level of satisfaction. This certainly isn't a reason to not travel...you wouldn't not start a new job or relationship because it might become less exciting in the future, but "that's the reality people"...grass is greener on other side, etc.
There is also something about distance...how far away from home am I going. After doing a lot of distance travelling, I found joy in trying to discover more interesting hidden gems near to home.

I realized: Travel is just one of life's adventures into the unknown, there are many that are equally amazing and worthwhile.
Having a family and kids.... Every day is a new experience and challenge. Amazing.
A vibrant career doing things that you love to do...working with amazing people, solving interesting problems, trying on new hats, etc.
New projects of passion, volunteer work, etc.
Honestly, these are all so closely related and their effect can be the same...you don't have to physically travel to new locations to get many of the benefits of traveling. It is really about experiencing new things, the anticipation and planning, the stretching of oneself and joy of discovery.
Ironically, I think that sometimes people seek adventures and travel because they aren't getting what they need from relationships, career, etc...if those things are mundane and unchanging then over time people build up a deficit for change and new things, and travel can be a really quick way to fill that up and reset yourself.
In the same way, now that I have children and a family and have joined a fast-moving startup, I fell less of that wanderlust (definitely not gone!) I had before, because my life is more engaging and changing on a day to day basis.
Also, as a side-note, I would completely disagree that going into serious debt just to travel is worth it...find a cheaper option, get a job based on traveling (e.g., teach english in China), or wait and save up.
Note: My travels were primarily to South and Central America and throughout Europe...I also did a round-the-world trip with my wife (while pregnant...yes, she is amazing).

What are five reasons why people do not travel, and why?
1.Fear of the Unknown: People may be hesitant to travel because they are afraid of the unknown.
They may not know what to expect in a new place, or how they will handle unfamiliar situations and cultures.
2.Cost: Travel can be expensive, especially if you’re going somewhere far away or for an extended period of time.
This can make it difficult for people who don’t have a lot of money saved up to take trips without breaking their budget.
3.Time Commitment: Taking a trip requires planning and preparation which takes time that some people just don't have due to work commitments or other obligations at home that need attention first before taking off on vacation .
4 Lack Of Interest/Motivation : Some people simply lack interest in traveling; either because they feel like there is nothing new out there worth exploring, or because they prefer staying close by where everything is familiar and comfortable .
5 Health Issues : For those with health issues such as chronic pain , mobility problems , allergies etc., travelling might not always be possible due to physical limitations .

One thing you don’t hear about when asking this question is what people feel when traveling.
It’s different for each person.
The first time I go to a new country I’m inundated and immersed in an entirely new culture. New money, clothing, religion, and food.
This is astounding.
First time I went to Nepal was a jolt of a new dimension that turned my world upside down and made me see what a bubble I lived in at home in the heart of Silicon Valley in Palo Alto.
And I was invited into a level of friendliness I’d never experienced before.
My son was volunteer teaching art in Kathmandu and had invited me to come and visit him.
I led a volunteer project for the Nepal Youth Foundation teaching the staff how to take photographs of the children they took care of.
It was a life changing experience to be welcomed into their world. I learned how to pantomime my way into describing how to take better photos. They did know English but I had to learn how to slow down my speech and explain things in a simple and clear way.
I was smitten.
I loved educating and this jumpstarted my life in a new direction.
So if you travel you won’t come back as the same person. It will change you.
You may not know how much you have changed until you return to your country but the feeling you get as you evolve in a new country includes this:
Shock, delight, awkwardness, discomfort, ecstasy, and being thrilled on a daily basis.
If you want to transform your life just travel and see for yourself what happens!

People are motivated to travel for different reasons. But I have a slightly offbeat take on the topic.
As an activity, travel can lend a different perspective to the way we experience reality. There is an inverse relationship between the number of first experiences we have and age. Most of our first experiences happen in childhood and tend to decrease as we get older (or if you would prefer the rate at which we experience firsts is higher during childhood and decreases with age). And it so happens that first experiences tend to be very memorable, for example your first bicycle ride, your first kiss, your first car and so forth, this could also include a list of negative events. I would describe a memorable event as a moment in our lives where we engage our senses in a very holistic manner and cast that moment into long term memory. Now travelling provides an opportunity to experience many firsts and hence engage our senses in a similar manner thereby making it a very memorable event. This feeling, I believe, can be very appealing when we reach a stage of our lives dominated by routine.
Of course, there are several advantages to travelling such as widening one's view of the world but I have reason to believe that this act boils down to acquiring new experiences, be it discovering new cultures or exploring new cuisines, that ultimately lends motivation to engage with other similar experiences over and over again. And travel helps do precisely that.

I have lived in India my whole life and "the thing I wanted to do before I die was travel !"
Travel as an Idea that I have had while reading the numerous books that I have read through my growing up years.
Travel, because it sounds cool.
Travel, because I need a break.
So I did ... Travel.
On my maiden trekking trip to the mountains, (that was the first time I have seen one in real life!) I got lost along with the group and reached the destination at 1 am in the morning.
I did not know I liked the sound of rivulets so much.
I did not know I was strong enough to semi-carry a fellow passenger through a rocky river bed, happily, with conviction.
I once floated away in a river I have never heard of and did not want to come ashore, when finally my team had to coax me back to the ground. I still do not know how to swim.
When I was in Rishikesh, I only drank water from the River Ganges and without Geo-line, I almost fell off in one of the rapids, but could not care less.
I zip-lined over the Ganges, Water Rappelled after a 3 hour hike and came home to tell the tale.
I talked to random strangers about their life, laugh and cry with them. I get utterly blown away with the contradiction of their life with my own and I silently rejoice being the introvert that I am in real life.
I smile with my heart when I pose for a photograph in a place which I am at the moment, and forget about the rest of the world.
I do not remember who I used to be.
I just have a faint idea of who I might be now.
I travel because that's is the only concrete reason for my existence.

I guess is the same reason that make people read books: to experience something different, to learn something new .
For example I've been working as a programmer / consultant for the past 16 years, but next week I'm going to leave everything behind as I take off on a 18 months long trip around the globe.
Getting to a new place for me is like a soft reset.. fear of unknown at the beginning, the joy of discovering something new, confort when I get to know my way around and eventually boredom sets in ... until it's time for another reset.
