Laugh out loud? Why? I'm surprised at so many negative comments ridiculing the coronation. The Post seems to draw many readers who like expressing their DISrespect for UK royalty, and its ceremony.
To me and many Americans, the coronation ceremonies magnificent. I enjoyed and was impressed by the pomp, pageantry, and traditional rituals. And tho not religious, I found even the religious elements impressive.
I appreciated the British history, the long traditions acted out by the royals and the Archbishop, the stunning Westminster Abbey and street scenes, and the wonderful marching military bands and costumes. And the royal carriage.
The choral music was impressive ---the orchestra played beautiful, inspiring Bach music from past centuries, fitting the occasion.
In 1981 I was in Cambridge for a summer college course, and joined the London street crowds to watch the wedding procession of Charles and Diana. I recall standing on a cafe chair to see the carriage pass. Impressive then-- and now on TV.
The Brits acting out such long tradition deserves some respect. Is America superior, just because it doesn't have 'royalty'? But King Charles has no power over UK laws.
Btw--- tho the UK NHS needs some reform now --- let's ask, which country has had guaranteed health care for all as a right-- since the 1940s? The UK Or the US? We still don't have it in 2023.

But, I have become more agnostic about having a harmless, politically powerless head of state who wields what we might call "soft diplomatic" influence. The British royal family costs the British public £1.29 per taxpayer a year ($1.61). Supposedly they bring in more than that in tourist revenue. I've always been suspicious of that claim but an international EU survey did list the British Royal family as having the highest brand revenue after the Pope.
At the end of the day, I might bemoan the anti-democratic basis of a royal family but I also love the spectacle and history of my nation and for less than £2 a year I'll keep them thanks.
I've noted the many disparaging comments here and all I can think is fine, enjoy your joyless "perfect" society in the USA. Not all countries have to mirror your system.

The childish, catty and otherwise idiotic and predictable comments here remind me of the British comedian who got lots of laughs when he said that if you have a strong opinion about something you know nothing about, you must be an American.

I watched because of the pageantry, but I ended up finding a lot of it laughable. With all the sacred rings, scepters, and orbs, all I could think of was Tolkien.

It’s the last vestige of an important but bygone era of human history and if the British people want to continue to foot the bill for the pageantry of the institution and continue to bestow upon it a limited role in government then more power to them. It’s their own history and it’s up to them as to whether or not they should continue to fund it with public dollars and continue to recognize the monarchy as the head of state.
It’s not my cup of tea but the notion that we don’t have incredible wealth by birthright here in the good old USA is laughable. We’ve got our own unhealthy dose of celebrity culture as well. The two aren’t outwardly mixed in an institution recognized by the government and publicly funded like the monarchy is but we’re not as far removed from it as we’d like to believe that we are.
I paid attention for two reasons. It’s not only a geopolitically important event but a rare historical event as well. I have friends and family members born after Elizabeth was crowned who didn’t live long enough to witness the monarchy change hands. I liken it to the process of sexting a new pope. These aren’t leaders of institutions that I belong to nor care about but they are rare events with a historical significance that can’t be denied.
