Generally, height and white skin are not the only factors that define Southeast Asia or Northeast Asia. it may change according to policy or living conditions. Many other factors are needed (such as origin, genotype, culture, society...).

I’m Chinese, in my opinion :
Vietnamese are genetically more Southeast Asian, consider they have darker skin color and their average height is much shorter than CJK.
Vietnamese culture is more East Asian, at least the north Vietnam.
Vietnamese is geographically southeast Asian without any doubt.
So in simple words, I personally consider Vietnam as a Southeast Asian country but some kind assimilated by East Asia.

TL;DR Vietnam was one of the Baiyue tribes living in modern-day Guangdong, Guangxi and Northern Vietnam whose empire/kingdom Âu Lạc was defeated by 赵佗 (Triệu Đà, who was a Han Chinese general) and incorporated into 交趾(Giao Chỉ) which would later be absorbed by the Han Empire which began the 1000 years of Chinese domination 时北属 (Thời Bắc Thuộc). Note that the original Viets, who were of Tai Kadai origins from northern Thailand and nearby area, were RACIALLY and CULTURALLY assimilated by the Chinese. That’s the reason why Vietnamese have around 60%–80% of their language originated from Chinese, and every Chinese word has their Vietnamese equivalent, even if that word is not used much anymore in Vietnamese. For example, Phi Trường (飞场), the word for Airport, was popular until the 21st century when the original Vietic word Sân Bay replaced it. Plus, the majority of Vietnamese are of Kinh Tộc / 京族, the names for the newly arrived Chinese immigrants who lived in/near the capital Thăng Long 升龙. Northern Viets are indistinguishable from Southern Chinese, and the dark-skinned Viets you see are often mixed/or newly conquered people from the Champa Kingdom.

I noticed this too. A lot of my friends back in Vietnam told me that I speak like “an old man”, because the Viet-Am language not only maintained older Sino-Vietnamese phonetics, but also incorporated a lot of American English terms that were seen during South Vietnam’s exposure to the West.

Vietnamese are Vietnamese. Mongolian are Mongolian. East Asians are Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong Folks. Southeast Asians are people from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and etc…
Vietnamese and Mongolian are separate from the other Asians. East Asians do not look like Mongolian for example, their body structure is also very different. Vietnamese do not look East Asian nor Southeast Asian, we are our own distinct classification.

Vietnamese and Mongolian are separate from the other Asians. East Asians do not look like Mongolian for example, their body structure is also very different. Vietnamese do not look East Asian nor Southeast Asian, we are our own distinct classification.

Northern Vietnamese here. Neither, Vietnamese are not East nor Southeast Asian. Vietnamese have big eyes but light skin. Majority of East Asian have small eyes and light skin while Southeast Asian have big eyes but darker skin. Vietnamese have strong East Asian like work ethic but are also extremely social. Vietnamese are more social than even Southeast Asians. Vietnamese society is very warm, social, and welcoming.
I don’t relate to other East nor Southeast Asians. Vietnamese society is just very different from the rest of Asia.
