From the first time I saw these guys, I was amazed that the explanation wasn’t obvious to literally everyone.

You will always see two interesting features with such levitators. There’s a staff in hand, and a carpet or something below. The intuitively obvious answer is that the carpet/flowers/whatever serve as a base and the staff serves as the structural join between the base and some seating apparatus that runs through the sleeves of the robe.

It’s nifty, but not complicated. The trick is obvious but with a moment’s thought.

I think I'll build one for myself and use it when handing out Halloween candy. Dress up like a floating ghost.

That’d be neat.

Stephen Merkel to Jeff Truax
If you use a bike seat hidden under the robe, you can appear to be standing, floating off the ground. If you make the staff a scythe, you can dress up like a skeleton under the robe, and do a good grim reaper.
Extra credit if you work out a counterweight system, so you can appear to be seated and levitating, but then with very minor movement of your hand on the staff, exert enough force to lift your whole body weight to standing and floating. That would be an awesome scare effect, as they might expect the levitation, but as soon as you are standing, but floating 10 inches off the ground, having apparently risen several feet into the air is less likely to have been seen before, and really sells the illusion.

Jeff Truax to Stephen Merkel
Ok now you got me thinking

Windy Wilson to Jeff Truax
He’s got everyone thinking.

Maya Deva Kniese to Stephen Merkel
Bike seat to sit on, with a rod a bit below to hook your feet on to appear sitting, and another further down to stand on.

Windy Wilson to Stephen Merkel
I need to consult with my engineer on this. This could bring giving trick or treat candy to impressionable children to a whole new level of . . . disturbing illusion. For decades now, I’ve been using a standard pair of small latex goat horns that remarkably match my pale complexion glued to my head as my costume. Otherwise, I dress quite . . . Normally. Polo shirt and khakis, for example. One little girl looked up at me and asked, “Are those real?” Being a wise guy, I said, “Yes!” She said, “They’re Not!” As she ran back to her mother waiting at the sidewalk.
Another year, a slightly older girl looked at me after I opened the door and after a long pause asked, with a catch in her voice, “Are you the Devil?” After I gave her the candy, I said, “I’m not wearing a costume”. She looked at me like I was putting her on, which I was, and after she left, my Sister-in-Law’s friend said, “She’ll need years of therapy.”
The levitation trick sounds better than the coffin on the porch trick or the headless doorman trick.

Liza D to Jeff Truax
My daughter (an engineer) did exactly that! She put a structure together and brought it to our house, we have a better neighborhood for trick-or-treating. She had a friend of hers help her with the flowing robes. My husband put up some colored lights to add to the mystery. The young kids in the neighborhood were amazed. Good fun!

Don James to Jeff Truax
That'd be a great idea,I wish I could do it but they got people so scared around here they don't even trick or treat anymore.

Roy Wilson to Don James
My younger brother actually had the cops called one Halloween. He’d used an old WWI U.S. Army uniform handed down in the family to make himself “headless” (a lens for seeing replaced one jacket button) and sat on the wide porch railing holding a lit jack o’ lantern in one arm. When someone came up the steps to the porch, he kicked a switch to hidden speakers that played a set of dissonant low, low notes and then stood up, holding the jack o’ lantern like it was looking at the people. There were little kids who screamed and fled in tears.
The cop just warned him but first took him across town to where another high school kid was set up in a coffin along the sidewalk up to his house, with a periscope lens looking out to watch the sidewalk, and when someone would come up he would slowly lift the coffin lid — rigged to creak, of course! — sit up, and mumble garbled words through mummy-like wrappings (though this mummy was wearing a VERY nice suit!). The cop wanted to see who scared whom!

Daniel Schwartz
…and another relevant feature — the levitating person always wears long sleeves.

John Bingamon to Daniel Schwartz
…and never see them rise from floor, or move the least bit while levitating…

Jim Kolter to John Bingamon
Yeah that’s the point no one sees them floating up it’s just “ look that monk is float!” Not how did he get there?

Ed Rhodes to Jim Kolter
I have seen them jump into the mid air pose.

Jim Rogers
I mean…how someone believes this stuff without seeing movement..?
And the pole in hand makes it so very obvious that there’s something tricky going on, even if it’s not clear what that tricky thing is.

Sarah Madden to Jim Rogers
There's literally something up his sleeve!

Ian Ryan to Jim Rogers
If you think’s ridiculous, I know a guy who claims to turn cheap wine into blood!

Windy Wilson to Ian Ryan
For decades, friends and I have regularly changed expensive beer into worthless urine, but no one wants to see That miracle.

Jeff Dege
The real magic is in how the magician arranges himself on the platform without making it obvious how it all works.

Stephen Merkel to Jeff Dege
Show up at 5 AM, and stay until 9 PM or so.

Jim Guibault to Stephen Merkel
That’s a long time without peeing

Lev Borisov to Jim Guibault
It would not surprise me if there were a device of some sort for that purpose.

Docwill to Stephen Merkel
He is definitely ‘stuck.’

Visar E. to Stephen Merkel
If need debunking I'd encamp myself there.

Gillermo Fromka to Jeff Dege
or how does he pee

Michael Holzer to Gillermo Fromka
There are a couple of solutions
either don't pee (don't drink ahead and suffer a bit of dehydration)
piss in a prearranged bottle
piss in a diaper
piss in a tube that goes through the construction (might look strange thoug if your piss comes out of the bottom of the rod)

Garry Dallmann
When I visited Rome these guys were all over the place and we saw the setup one morning. The guy had a number of helpers that held up an opaque cloth all around the guru so that he could mount the steel frx and arrange the robes to hide the trick. What I thought was the best part of the trick was that it actually got people to give them money.

Bill Smith
Just set it up and get in position. A dozen people may be watching as they walk past, but so what? They have places to go and things to do. Five minutes later, they are gone and new people are arriving.
It’s not like there is some big secret to protect. Anyone with a brain knows how it works.

Sean Bond
Have seen one of them setting up when I was out late at a event.

David Sandiford
I’ve seen Yoda do it in Trafalgar Square in London. Obviously he was using the Force.

Larry Jackson to David Sandiford
More like the farce.

David Sandiford to Larry Jackson
The Farce is all around us. It flows through us, it shapes our lives.

Alexandre Nunes to David Sandiford
Obviously the force works only because he is from a galaxy far, far away.

Lee Ballentine
Not only can this monk levitate, flowers bloom underneath his sublime form wherever he goes, even out of the asphalt. Truly a holy man.

Michael Gengler to Lee Ballentine
Blooming plastic flowers. How authentic.

Windy Wilson to Michael Gengler
Hey! Fresh flowers are expensive. If more people tithed to him, the devout would receive the real enlightenment from him, along with real flowers!.

Jack Arthurs
If I’d thought up this trick, I’d have also thought, “Naw, won’t fool anyone!”
Guess I’d have been wrong.

Danny Kodicek
A similar trick being used here by UK magician Dynamo. The short sleeves make it more impressive-looking but I’m fairly certain he has a fake arm on.

Andy Kaminski
If you knock the staff away and they don't fall, they are the real deal.

Max Williams
Next they’ll be asking if anyone can explain those bronze statue guys - how do they get there and what does a bronze statue need change for anyway?

Bill Smith to Max Williams
They melt down the coins to make more bronze.

Michael Lucas
OK, that explains the levitating Asian monks.
But what about the non-Asian ones?

Vijendra Kumar
I think the real trick here is to be able to stay in this position for hours every day

Gary Fabian
Plus, it would be rather trivial to make the upright out of a hydraulic cylinder and conceal a hose running to a hydraulic pump. Then the levitator could start out sitting on the ground, push a concealed switch and appear to actually rise up from the ground.

Dallas McKay
It's still fun. I know magic isn't real, but I love it. In my home, everyone belives in Santa Clause, The Easter Bunny, Leprechauns, etc. I'll take fun over fact 70% of the time.

John Bingamon to Dallas McKay
Why not both? Fun and facts aren't, or don't need to be, in opposition. I don't believe in Santa Claus but enjoy the mythos. I don't believe in magic, but greatly enjoy trying to understand the math/science/facts behind it.

Dallas McKay to John Bingamon
I agree to a point. But the mystery is part of the fun.

Windy Wilson to Dallas McKay
You know the three stages of man?
He believes in Santa Claus.
He doe NOT believe in Santa Claus
He is Santa Claus.

Jules Wallace
The n there are those goofballs who, while in a lotus position hop and claim they are levitating. They need psychiatric help.

Gary Hall to Andy Brown
They were a good source of comedy.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

Gary Hall to Murphy Barrett
The Maharishi’s yogic sect claims that you can levitate once you reach an advanced level of consciousness. Practitioners spent a lot of time bouncing around in the lotus position expecting that one of these days, they won’t come back down…

Amy Renfrew
My favourite thing about this picture are the people walking by in the background paying no attention at all to the dude who is apparently levitating. I get the distinct impression they are on to him.

Thomas R. Jackson
They aren’t a hoax, they are a trick. People love these sorts of tricks, especially when they are done well and evoke a sense of mystery and realness. There is a multibillion dollar global entertainment industry based on this. Engineering is heavily relied upon.
