Costs: South Korea is cheaper than Japan and the living standards in South Korea don’t drop when you’re in the countryside but the costs do however in Japan costs are extremely high in Tokyo, Osaka, etc. and in the rural areas as well but rural life in Japan has lower living standards.
Food: If you’re into fishy, sometimes sweet or sour foods, soups, etc. then Japan is the right pick for you but if you’re more into spicy food, pork, barbecue, Kimchi, etc. then South Korea is right for you. Vegetables and fruits are very expensive compared to the West in both South Korea and Japan but in South Korea you can find restaurants and cafes that have good food for a cheap price whereas eating out in Japan is very expensive if you’re not rich.

Pollution: South Korea definitely has more pollution than Japan but its mainly seasonal and not nearly as bad as in China, India or Vietnam. Pollution in Japan is barely noticeable so both countries are okay in that regard but for South Korea, in Winter there is a fine dust period where wearing a mask is important.
Nature: Cities in South Korea tend to be concrete jungles with only a few but quite beautiful and spacious areas of nature, in Japan most big cities have a bunch of nature. The countryside in both countries is very beautiful, both Korea and Japan are majorly mountainous and hilly. In South Korea you’ll find more mountains and hiking trails but in Japan the mountains are higher so depends on what you’re into. South Korea has more beaches and Japan has more islands, lakes, etc.

I agree with the former, but the food thing, I disagree. What lack of variety do you speak of? I see chinese/thai/vietnamese/korean/western/italian/steak/ramen/sushi. etc etc food restaurants EVERYWHERE. Ok maybe not everywhere and they have a Japanese twist on them, but a lack of variety it is not if you are willing to try different restaurants and food. Infact it feels more diverse than Canada, (although Canada I think has less spin on their ethnic foods).

I know friends and family who’ve visited the two countries in numerous occasions, and I have many Korean and Japanese friends. I’ve also researched a reasonable amount of the two countries.
Japan - You are at your grandmother's house. Everything is neat, nice, polite, and she has a long history, but she has very high and specific standards that you are expected to live up to.
South Korea - You are at your cousin's house. Louder, livelier, more energetic and more down to earth, but it can be pretty overwhelming and restless sometimes.

Having also been to Japan before, there a few reasons why I like Korea better.
#1 is cost of living. Tokyo costs way more to live in than Seoul. Koreans like to think Seoul is expensive - it’s not - compared to Tokyo and Shanghai, Seoul is downright reasonable.
#2 is Koreans can speak better English on average than Japanese
#3 is Koreans are easier to read than Japanese. A lot of people put this a strong point of Japanese: that they are more polite, cultured etc. They are actually too polite to a fault. so much so that you can’t really tell what they are thinking. They are too polite to ever say anything directly. You never know whether the girl you are taking on a date is enjoying it or not. Either way she will say she enjoyed it. Whereas with Korean people and Korean girls they will be more direct in telling you what’s on their mind (but not TOO direct like Chinese). That’s the perfect balance I think.
#4 is you are in danger of earthquakes and nuclear radiation in Japan. In Korea you just have to worry about ‘Rocket Man’ but that’s ok - because if he ever does something, all Koreans can die at once and you don’t have to worry about losing any of your loved ones because you will be dead too! yay!

I've lived in both. I was in Osaka for close to 4 years and Seoul for about a year and a half. I was married to a Japanese for 6 years.
For my part, I strongly prefer Seoul.
Consumer goods are very expensive in Japan. Without eating out much, I spent over 1,000 USD a month on food in Japan. I could not spend half of that in Seoul if I tried.
Most of the subway and train lines in Japan are privately owned. Up until recently, you had to buy tickets for each seperate line, and they often have seperate stations, right across the street from each other with no overlapping maps. This can make navigating the transit system confusing and expensive. In Korea, all the lines are publically owned and master planned with map routes all laid out nicely in English.
我在日本的大阪住了近4年，在韩国住了大约一年半，还和一个日本人结婚了6年。

Most expats work in IT/tech, import-export, or education in both countries. Employers in these fields typically offer their employees either a housing allowance or a subsidized apartment in Korea. When I was in Japan in 2008, there was no housing allowance of any kind at most firms. At that time, apartments in Osaka for a single person in a decent area ranged from 700 to 1000 USD per month. So you are stretching your salary even further by paying rent in Japan when it could be mostly or totally free elsewhere. To add to the Stretch utilities are at least twice as expensive in Japan.
There are more western expats in Korea. Far more Koreans speak basic English. Koreans are also more friendly and outgoing. Japanese are quite shy and reserved. You'll find it far easier to make friends in Korea. Japan has more stuff for tourists to see and do, and its far bigger, but it won't matter much if you cannot afford to do any of it.

There are more western expats in Korea. Far more Koreans speak basic English. Koreans are also more friendly and outgoing. Japanese are quite shy and reserved. You'll find it far easier to make friends in Korea. Japan has more stuff for tourists to see and do, and its far bigger, but it won't matter much if you cannot afford to do any of it.

My advice is: if you are fresh out of school with a BA, or just just few years experience under your belt, and are just looking to travel, have some fun, and speak some English, I'd go to Korea. If you are a licensed public school teacher with a masters and/or several years of experience in your home country, or an IT / tech professional with several years experience at a large firm back home, I'd avoid Japan and South Korea entirely. For middle to upper level career type expats, Mainland China or Saudi Arabia are much better bets. Neither of those countries are picnics to live in, but you'll make twice the money there. A teacher can make 4,000 to 6,000 USD a month while a principal or experienced IT personcan make 7,000 to 10,000 USD a month (I know an architect in Shanghai making that much). With that sort of coin, you can fly out to Thailand for a week when you start to go crazy.

I have lived in both countries, and in my personal opinion, Japan tends to offer much cleanlier cities and more impressive tourist attractions, but Korea offers food with a certain piquant heartiness that outclasses Japanese food and a certain impetuous vivacity that more rigid and subdued Japan lacks. Korea feels more organic and lively and less orderly; Japan feels more pleasant and well-organized.
If you are teaching English, Korea offers better pay as you can live comfortably on a much smaller percentage of your income than in Japan. If you are working in some other area, both countries have a work culture in which employees are primarily devoted to their companies and spend a great deal of their lives working overtime, even at the cost of their health in some cases.

Japanese culture demands extream reservation. They ask people to mould into the one public norms: clean, be quiet, and wear homogeneous black suit, including school uniform. Everyone is extreamly pressured to uphold public virtue. Otherwise, it is “savage.” My experience is indivisual Japanese people are vey emotional, somewhat depressed, and even mentally unhealthy (bully culture is prent). However, they were told to hide those feelings and follow the public norm of behaving. So much of public pressure and public judgement. It is not a democratic society. It is orderly and clean, but it gets suffocating after a while. Also, extreamly xenophobic, - no time to write about this (but pretty well known fact).

Korea is also very clean and orderly- just not as much as Japan, but still 10 times cleaner and puncutal/orderly than Paris, NYC, Beijing, or any other major cities and countries in the world, especially with such a scale of economy. People in Korea are more expressive than Japanse, but not as much as the Westerners or Chinese. People are polite and geninune. Most people are very kind & generous to foreigners and try to help them if you are in need— with authencity! The country has longer history (5000 years) than Japan and has extreamly interesting economic and political maturity. It is a dynamic country with ongoing advancement in culture, economy, and politics. No country is perfect on earth, but you will see a treasure of culture and future when you are in Korea.

Personally, though I’m reserved/shy but liberal in mindset, I would go for South Korea over Japan. I like both the Japanese and Koreans, but based on my recent year long introduction to Asian dramas, the South Koreans are amazing with their story telling (and quite prolific at it, too). I mention this, as it’s the only way I would be able to judge, not ever having visited either country. However, a culture’s entertainment industry, in my opinion, can give clues as to how they think, and while each can be very rigid, not unlike some Americans, they (both Korea and Japan) have a level of respect for each other, and their families, far above what we Americans show. I think just that makes South Korea and Japan honorable nations. Wish we Americans were more thoughtful of others. That’s my liberal mind speaking… ;)

Agree with all Joshua wrote. I have also lived in both and would characterize the Japanese as gentler, and Koreans as rougher. Both characteristics are endearing in their own way. Having said that, I have chosen to stay in Korea for the financial reasons Joshua mentioned but also for the food and culture. I’ve never felt uncomfortable as a foreigner in Korea or Japan, disregarding the general culture shock that is common to someone young and naive from the west.

I have lived in both countries and I agree with you, particularly concerning the difference between the personalities of Japanese people and Koreans. While I had good friends in Japan, my friendships with Koreans went much deeper because they were much warmer than the Japanese and I felt that I got to know their innermost thinking. Also, conversation with them was a lot more interesting than the ones I had with Japanese people, who tend to be very conventional. As far as romance is concerned, I had no involvement with Japanese women, who were certainly attractive, but seemed to have rather flat, monochromatic personalities. By contrast, the three Korean women that I got involved with, over a period of twenty years, were among the most attractive and interesting women I have ever known. They were beautiful, warm-hearted, intelligent and colorful. Those women were like characters in a movie - dramatic and charismatic - and they penetrated deeply into my heart. For some fairly tragic reasons, they are all out of my life now, but their profound imprint on me remains and I remember them with great love and respect.

I don't know what your sexual orientation is, but to us heterosexual men, it's a basic and very important instinct that doesn't get switched off just because we're living in a foreign country. Consequently, we heterosexuals are strongly interested in the local women when we live abroad. If you're gay, that's fine, but don't judge us heterosexuals so harshly. Without a doubt SK. Japan is in economic stagnation, wages haven't gone up in 20 years. SK has better wages for foreign people and all costs of living are half of Japan. SK people are ruder but friendlier than Japanese. While Japanese are more polite, you will find them colder and more difficult to make friends with.
Although Japanese food is nice, you will eventually get bored with the lack of variety. Korean food is so much deeper.

I agree with the former, but the food thing, I disagree. What lack of variety do you speak of? I see chinese/thai/vietnamese/korean/western/italian/steak/ramen/sushi. etc etc food restaurants EVERYWHERE. Ok maybe not everywhere and they have a Japanese twist on them, but a lack of variety it is not if you are willing to try different restaurants and food. Infact it feels more diverse than Canada, (although Canada I think has less spin on their ethnic foods).
