Here are poor people in Britain:
No, the American poor are, by no means, the richest poor in the world.
America is the wealthiest country in the world, in terms of GDP, it’s one of the richest in the world, in terms of average income, and it has more billionaires than any country by far.
But the US also has disturbingly high levels of inequality, and an upsettingly high level of poverty, compared to other wealthy countries (American has twice as many people per capita living on less that $5.50 per day than Canada or the UK, and ten times as many as France or Germany). And we don’t tend to fund as comprehensive social services and social programs for the poor.
The poorest Americans are presumably better off than the poorest people in the DRC, or even India or Brazil. But compared to the the poorest people in Canada, Australia or Western Europe? We probably don’t look so good.

No. They are not even the richest poor in the First World.
This is a poor neigbourhood in Finland .
This is a poor neigbourhood in the United States (makeshift shelters and tents).
The Gini index of the United States (0.49) is similar as in many Third World countries. It suggests the rich are filthy rich in the US and the poor are dirty poor in the US.

For cryin’ out loud.
I’ve travelled quite a bit, and the poor in the US reminded me of the poor in North Africa.
All poor Western Europeans are immensely better off than poor people in the US. For starters, they have free healthcare and education. Their general standard of living is a lot higher, guaranteed by social programs. As an example, poor people in Sweden are guaranteed Internet access – it’s considered a right as a citizen to have access to news.

I have just had a conversation with an American woman who disagreed with something I said who then wrote a novel sized post to tell me what a shithole country I lived in, with lots of photos of poor districts. It must have taken her some time to search for and gather them. The photos and her evidence to prove that I lived in a shithole country (her words) were of Wales in the UK.
I live in New South Wales, the most populous state in Australia! I know that Americans are geography challenged but I was amused and wanted to send her pictures of York in the UK, seeing she lives in NEW York, but I couldn’t find any pics of York that were as bad as the US NEW York.

The U.S. has the highest infant mortality rate of all the so-called first world democracies at 6.6 per 100,000. That’s worse than Russia (5.4), Cuba (5.1) and a huge gap from the Nordic countries (between 1.9 and 2.6). Infant mortality is a huge indicator of poverty and inequality. But with the crazy right wing against any type of birth control as well as making maternal and infant health so patchy, you pretty well have a guarantee of high rates.

I believe the USA is more extreme because of it’s quite high wealth inequality, which lead the country to more extremes than that in Europe. That isn’t to say USA isn’t doing anything about it, but Europe is just more equal, both income and wealth wise than USA. In my opinion this inequality comes down to 1 factor; the philosophy behind how the US market operates. Because the US market is highly speculative, with decent marketing, a company can grow fast and hit a wall shortly after that, which at the start allows for huge wealth creation, hits a peak and falls relatively fast, creating massive gaps. Also, drug addiction is higher and more persistent in the US culture, along with gang violence and gun violence. Europe took a ton of safety precautions after the financial crisis in 2008, but unfortunately USA didn’t committ to the same extend, leading to one crisis after the other.

Unfortunately, here in US of America, the Republicans want to put more restrictions (work requirements) on food aid to the poor, when due to inflation and supply chain shortages, food costs have skyrocketed. This makes no sense to me, as food insecure households lead to higher health care costs in poor citizens as well as crime. The Republicans want to fight over the debt ceiling battle to make the poor in the US more poor.
Sweden is looking better all the time! Free Internet! Free Education and Healthcare! If we educated and fed our poor better, they might climb the ladder to the middle class.

Some official statistics are shocking. 30% does not have enough cash reserve to pay $400 for unexpected health expense or minor car repair, 15% families have personal value which is negative, and have to choose daily between food, rent or medications.

Poor in the US get free education, subsidized housing, and free healthcare as well.
The US poverty rate is at 13% and falling. It is lower or comparable to many western European countries. The UK alone has a 22% poverty rate.
Poor people in the US struggle with obesity. Poor people in Africa struggle to even find food.
Do you really even know what you're talking about?
My guess is you watch too much TV, and don't actually pay attention to the reality on the ground.

First I agree the poor in the the US aren’t the richest poor in the world. But we do have free access to education through high school. I know a lot of people who started out poor here who are now doing quite well. (My mother is a millionaire. )Actually collegiate financial aid packages that pay for everything are available if your family is dirt poor.
As far as your initial line “For crying’ out loud.” Did you consider the source of the question? It was asked by Murli Manohee Vajepai who claims to live in New York. If you look at his profile questions and answers, he’s an idiot. He likes to throw out stupid comments and questions so that people get outraged.
You took the bait.

I know US poor, not homeless or extreme poverty, just regular first/second quintile people, who HAD to move to Costa Rica to have affordable health care.
And that is extremely sad.

US healthcare was actually somewhat “affordable” until about 1980. Things went downhill after that. Same was true about education past the high school level. Without Republicans of the sort we have now, the US would be a lot more like the rest of the developed world.

I grew up in the USA and lived there until about 5 years ago, and there is an obvious answer to this question: The poor in Western Europe are FAR FAR better off than the poor in America. It isn’t even close, and the difference is even greater if we start talking about Scandinavian countries.
I don’t know much about the various welfare systems and the mathematical comparisons, but OMG I would SO MUCH rather be poor in Western Europe or Scandinavia than in the USA. Wow big difference.

I think the question itself is misguided, but you’re comparing a little boy who seems to be in some sort of government subsidized housing to a woman who decided to live in a tent near a pile of trash.
According to the United States Census Bureau over 30 million Americans live in poverty. Poverty is defined as reported income below $21,960 for a family of 3 in 2021.
However this figure does not include the social benefits received:
free medical coverage (Medicaid).
free college or university education.
free or subsidized housing (section 8). These are normal private sector rentals where the government simply pays part or all of the rent.
free food (SNAP ~ $200 / month) + food pantries for anyone who runs out.
The average American family defined as poor lives in an private, air conditioned, centrally heated house or apartment, in good repair.
They own a vehicle. Slightly less than half of poor families have two or more cars.
At least one TV with cable or satellite, computer or tablet with internet and a smartphone.
They shop at regular stores like Walmart for everyday stuff and have all the household amenities of the middle class with the “poverty” status being defined only as their official income figure which they report to the IRS.

Well I'm not American or European so I don't have any skin in the game so to speak. But comparing US and Canada/U.K. poverty in absolute number isn't all that fair.
While US may have twice the number of poor people, it has approximately 8 times the population of Canada and 5 times the population of U.K and France.
Now in case of France and Germany US still has greater ratio of poor people, but it is certainly not 10 times.

I'm going to edit the post, because this misconception keeps coming up. I don't mean absolute numbers I mean twice the percentage, twice the people per capita. 1.7% of Americans live on less than $5.50 a day. In Germany, it's 0.2%. That's not about population size, it's about social and economic structure.

I don’t know how does it look now, but when my parents went on a trip to the US in the late 90s they returned shocked at the levels of poverty in some areas. They have never seen anything like it. And they travelled from Poland just after transformation from communism and before the European unx membership (which was single most important factor for Poland’s development). They have also previously traveled Romania, Bulgaria during the 1980s and still it was the US that shocked them.
EDIT: it doesn’t mean that it looked much worse than poor areas in the Balkans. I think a lot of this opinion came out of disbelief and level of expectation - you don’t expect these levels of poverty in a developed country.

“America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves.... It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters.”
― Kurt Vonnegut

The Gini index of the United States (0.49) is similar as in many Third World countries. It suggests the rich are filthy rich in the US and the poor are dirty poor in the US.

All of those poor people really just need to find better jobs, take a few courses, sell their kidneys or something, and they’ll be fine. Ah. The land of the free and the home of the brave. What a joke.

Finland has a population of 5 million and is in the freezing north where you cannot be living on the street. Absurd comparison to make middle class Quora snobs feel good about themselves. Compare a sample of 300 million Europeans to the US. In Greece we have Gypsy camps that look like the makeshift shelters of the US homeless. Maybe worse. Let alone when you include swaths of East Europe. We do not have the homelessness of LA's skid row, but let's at least make intellectualy honest comparisons.

There is way far less homelessness in Mexico City than in New York…. besides that, we are having a heavy influx of US immigrants, many of them from “well-to-do” Californians…

No. I absolutely do not agree with that statement. The way the United States treats its poorest and neediest is shameful. Yes, you can find places that are worse, but that isn’t saying much. The poor in the United States are clearly and demonstrably not the “richest poor in the world.”
To even ask that question is to display a total lack of understanding or compassion. It also displays spectacular ignorance and low intelligence. The poor are not “rich” anywhere. That sentence is oxymoronic. It implies that the poor aren’t really poor and don’t actually need any public assistance. Such questions are usually heard coming from people who want an excuse for their own cupidity.
It also isn’t really a question. The way it’s presented makes it perfectly clear that it is really a statement, poorly disguised as a question.

No. It doesn’t sound as if you have traveled around much.
Poor people in the U.S. are worse off than poor people in most other developed countries. In most developed countries, even poor people get basic housing and healthcare.
I would argue that even in Morocco, where I have lived, the poor are better off than the poorest people in the U.S. They mostly sleep indoors, and good food is cheap and plentiful.

I moved to Kuwait in 1981 and stayed for 6 years. A friend who had lived there for a long time told me: “Kuwaiti society has 3 levels: the millionaires, the hundred millionaires, and the billionaires.” I asked: “Great, where do I fit in?” He replied: “You don’t. You’re just a servant. But as an American you’re a high level servant.”

Far from it.
American society makes minimal provision for ‘being poor’ the standard of public services is worse than many third world countries.
Further to that, Poor people in the US have very limited access to healthcare and further education.
The dominant philosophy in America is very much that peoples worth is defined by their wealth. People are despised by many simply for being poor.

Sort of.
Being poor is the dumps no matter where you live. But, would you rather be poor in America or poor in Haiti? America is one of the richest countries in the world. Sometimes we don't behave like we are. By not offering fair and competitive wages to our labor force, but we are. Western Europe is really the only place that has as good a standard of living, roughly. Maybe slightly better. Because they have more safety and social programs accommodating the poor than America.
