Spotted Vince, Korean dude I went to HS with across the way. On my way to break the seal, say hi to Vince. On the way back, she's still at it. Tell Vince he should tell her it means something else - he obxts, 'Bro, I'm not Japanese!' I know, Vince - you think she really knows the difference? (Relatively small, redneck-y town) He swags over, puts on a sad, puzzled look, and asks, 'why'd you get THAT tattooed on you?' She says the line again. He says, 'Oh no, girl, that says Cheap Sloppy Hooker (or something to that effect)'. This was before image interp on phones was common, and there was no one around to tell her otherwise. She fled the scene, near to tears. I almost felt bad for hatching such a devious plot - she was giving such I'm the main character vibes, though, so not too bad, really.

tbh I'd assume they didn't know if they refused to tell me. Not every Asian person knows Mandarin. More importantly though - the English you see over there is bad enough there is no reason to care about the poor use of Japanese / Chinese here. If anything, you should just give it a chuckle and move on.
ps - you can look up the characters online and see a translation if you actually care to.

My Chinese co-worker saw it and started laughing, saying it was all wrong and ridiculous / offensive in Chinese. But it is just the real name of the company, in Japanese kanji…
Not sure what I’m getting at except maybe we shouldn’t take these things so seriously.

So, Kuroneko is a really popular delivery service here in Japan. I don’t speak Chinese, so I don’t know what the characters mean in it, but in Japanese it literally just says “home delivery”. It’s funny how the characters work though.

We asked an airline interpreter to take her to side to explain what it meant. She had loved that t shirt but was so embarrassed about what it said. My ex is Chinese and whenever i saw these tattoos i'd send her over to read them.
Once she calls me up and says "i hate you".. shocked i asked her why she would say such a thing.. she told me she was in the mall and saw some white woman with a tattoo and felt compelled to go read it even thought i wasn't even there there..

Once she calls me up and says "i hate you".. shocked i asked her why she would say such a thing.. she told me she was in the mall and saw some white woman with a tattoo and felt compelled to go read it even thought i wasn't even there there..

Not really, you can still tell what the character is as long as all the elements are correct. I’ve seen tattoos with extra slashes and people combining characters to form nonsensical characters though. If the tattooing is bad then sometimes you can’t distinguish the elements apart from each other too.

My ex never elaborated exactly WHY they were unreadable, just that while they might look "Chinese" they were just nonsense. (She had a UNI degree from some uni in Beijing so I assume her written Chinese was good?).

It’s entirely possible. I’ve definitely encountered some characters that look Chinese but aren’t real characters. Could also be that sometimes she misreads poorly written traditional characters, which usually has more strokes/elements. If she’s not used to reading them and the the handwriting is “poor,” then she might classify that as unreadable. I was taught traditional Chinese as a child and then lived in China for three years, so neither writing system is an issue for me .

FYI, that (水道) in Japanese means "waterworks" in the sense of plumbing and sewer services. Literally it's "water road/path". (If you ask for water at a restaurant and want to say that tap water is fine, you can say this word.)

I read a story once about a guy in California or somewhere like that. He got a kanji tattoo that he proudly thought read "live forever". He wanted to show it off so he and some buddies went to a section of town that was filled with oriental restaurants and shops and such, and he was reveling in the various glances and whispering until they decided to stop in one of the restaurants for a bite. As soon as they walked in and the hostess saw the tattoo, every other person in the restaurant, who were all of Asian descent, were all escorted to the back into the kitchen. A large manly cook then came out by himself and began telling the group they had to leave, that they were not welcome there. Anger and confusion set on and there was arguing and yelling trying to figure out what was going on. Finally after a few minutes the cook pointed to the tattoo and said plainly, "that goes against everything we believe here, not just at this restaurant, but on every other part of this area of the city". The guy thought they were being racist because he was white and got a kanji tattoo so he began yelling at the cook, what's the big deal, it's just a tattoo, it doesn't mean anything, live forever is just a saying, ect. The cook then informed him that it didn't have to do with having a kanji tattoo, but specifically that one. The tattoo was not kanji for "live forever", it translated to "bring our ancestors back from the dead".
