This happened in my neighbourhood. Everyday when I go for walk I used to observe an earphone (Apple brand) lying on someone’s fence. I have been observing it almost two months. No one picks it up, even though a lot many people pass through the street everyday. So what is special about it ? This kind of incident I never witnessed in my country. I am from India where it is quite rare. If people see something useful item falling on the street or park or somewhere they don’t hesitate to pick it up for themselves. But in Japan, people consider it as a crime. Its more common here to handover the items at nearest police station that you have found. Sometimes I see stuffs in random places which people keep for the needy instead of throwing. Another incident I came across that my Chinese friend lost her smart phone two times and it came to her house both the times by post, only she had to pay the postal charge. I too lost my earphone and got it back after 15-20 days in the same park where I walk everyday. I found it over a stone inside park. I really like this practice of the people here.

Ever wondered why the Japanese people are so fit and are rarely overweight.
This was something I was curious about before coming to Japan. My earlier thought was that the people of Japan might be consuming less junk food and so with the much-hyped overwork culture in Japan, people naturally don’t gain weight.
But then when I came to Japan I noticed there was a much more critical and healthier factor at play.
Every morning before the start of the office there is a short morning exercise called ラジオ体操 (pronounced as Ra-Ji-O Tai-Sou).
The English name for this is Radio calisthenics.
你是否想过为什么日本人如此健康，很少超重呢？这是我在来日本之前很好奇的一个问题。我最初的想法是，日本人可能摄入较少的垃圾食品，而且由于日本流行的过劳文化，人们自然而然地不容易发胖。但当我来到日本后，我注意到有一个更为关键和更健康的因素起到了作用。每天上班前，都会有一个短暂的晨间锻炼活动，被称为"ラジオ体操"（英文名为Radio calisthenics）。
And it is practiced by Japanese people since their formative years.
At offices, this short exercise routine is performed by every employee together and sets up the day in a lively manner. Along with this, it encourages a sense of group unity and togetherness.
While living in India I never heard of such practices in offices and for me, it was extremely unique to see people gathering together every day and dedicating a few minutes to fitness.
The short workout session may not necessarily help in reducing a significant amount of body fat but practices like these help in making people aware of how important health is. This in turn inculcates other habits that drive people towards being fit and healthy.
To me, this was really special about Japan that physical fitness is given much-needed importance.
PS: Later while reading about it I found out that there are several countries that have a morning exercise routine. But I had my first-hand experience with this after coming to Japan.

On my very first visit to Japan, I arrived in Tokyo on a stormy August night. I was exhausted following the flight from New York, and a little overwhelmed by my new surroundings. After the flight and a train ride from the airport into the city, I hopped into a taxi from the station for the last leg of my journey. Not realizing that taxi doors open automatically in Japan, I committed my first etiquette faux pas – a very common one indeed, and typically laughed at. We reached our destination and I paid the white-gloved taxi driver. As I started out of the taxi, the driver stopped me. “Do you have an umbrella?” he asked. I told him I did not, but since I only had a few steps to walk, told him I was OK. But he was having none of it. From out of nowhere he unveiled a spare umbrella, and compelled me to take it. And thus, with his kindness, the first Japanese person I ever met in Japan had set a tone that would continue to this very day.
我最喜欢日本的三个方面：

The level of love and respect that goes into food preparation in Japan is nothing short of awe-inspiring. And it’s in no way limited to high-end or fine dining. From cheap neighborhood noodle shops to Michelin-starred and other top restaurants, the quality and taste of food in japan is of an incredibly high standard.
Whether you’re going for a simple, casual meal — or splurging on an exquisite once-in-a-lifetime meal at the counter of a shokunin (master) — you can almost always count on thoughtful and considerate service, and painstakingly prepared food.

There are as many reasons Japan is awesome as there are people who fall in love with Japan. Most of my experience is with Tokyo.
Cherry blossoms.
Temples and shrines.
Safety - the streets are relatively safe. You’d have to really be looking for a fight to get in to one. And random street crime is incredibly rare. For the most part, they leave foreigners alone.
Clean public transportation - though many will rave about the how trains run on time every time, that’s no longer true. But for the most part, it is true.
Food - there are hundreds of non-chain restaurants scattered throughout Japan. Competition for customers is extremely tough. So bad restaurants don’t stay around.
Supermarkets and convenience stores have an incredible sextion of foods that are ready to eat, and for the most part they are healthy.
People are polite and respectful in public.
Clean - public spaces are clean. You’ll be amazed how clean everything is.

This happened in my neighbourhood. Everyday when I go for walk I used to observe an earphone (Apple brand) lying on someone’s fence. I have been observing it almost two months. No one picks it up, even though a lot many people pass through the street everyday. So what is special about it ? This kind of incident I never witnessed in my country. I am from India where it is quite rare. If people see something useful item falling on the street or park or somewhere they don’t hesitate to pick it up for themselves. But in Japan, people consider it as a crime. Its more common here to handover the items at nearest police station that you have found. Sometimes I see stuffs in random places which people keep for the needy instead of throwing. Another incident I came across that my Chinese friend lost her smart phone two times and it came to her house both the times by post, only she had to pay the postal charge. I too lost my earphone and got it back after 15-20 days in the same park where I walk everyday. I found it over a stone inside park. I really like this practice of the people here.

I was so surprised to learn that compared to the US and many countries, most Japanese don’t spend that much time on social media. Many don’t have Facebook accounts and don’t actively post or look at information online. In a way, it’s understandable considering how concerned the Japanese are about maintaining their privacy.
It also shows that they are too busy living their lives and following the rules to care about what much of the world is fussing about. In a way, I think this is very wise because so much of what we see in social media nowadays are simply distractions. We don’t need to know about the Kardashians or see every single vacation photo our high school classmate took.

For me it was all in the little things and how old and new fuse together so well and creates magic.
For instance I love how, in pretty much every city, you can be surrounded by modern architecture, tall buildings and modern houses but move 1 km and you'll find yourself wandering on little streets with old traditional homes and shops.
I am still mesmarized by the number of shrines and temples Japan has, everywhere, in all sorts of sizes. By the fact that they still have all those festivals and they are still popular among Japanese. By the fact that watching cherry blossoms in spring is still a thing even now.

I love that their best food is usually found in small (rather shady) places, and how these places make you feel like home even as a foreigner. I love how friendly they are and how language is not a barrier when it comes to Japanese people, they will try very hard to communicate with you.
For me, Japan is amazing because of these kind of reasons. Others might tell you different, because we are not all looking for the same things when we go to Japan. These small things tho made this country so dear to my heart and are the reason why I am working really hard to return there one day.

Probably many things but there is one that impressed me. I was so unfortunate to be in Japan during the last devastating earthquake and tsunami, but luckily, I was in Osaka, far away from it. When I arrived in Tokyo a day later, just before the full magnitude of the catastrophe had manifested itself, I was witnessing the reaction of the Japanese people in the streets and everywhere, and at the same time I listened online to a German commentary. The German commentary misread completely what was going on and accused the Japanese of being basically like sheep, blindly following the authorities and ignorant of the dangers that emanated from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant. In reality, everybody understood acutely what was going on but did not prioritise their individual personal safety, but their duty, the wellbeing of their communities, families, and indeed mine! I do not think that many cultures would respond like this, certainly not in the western world, where people would have started to fight each other for the best escape positions on the motor way and the last drop of petrol.
