Over the past decade, Apple has ended up dominating Japan. Capturing 65% of their smartphone market, a number that Apple hasn’t reached in any other country, including the US. And that may seem a little odd considering Japan’s reputation for being the technological powerhouse of the world. Igniting the MP3 player era with the Walkman, and inventing the pocket calculator, DVD player, DSLR camera, laptop, blu-ray player, and more. Plus, Japanese people are known to try to buy products from their own country rather than those from overseas. So how did Apple, an American company on the other side of the world, manage to dominate Japan; a country filled with tech products of their own? Well, that’s exactly what I’m going to explain in this video.

Fun fact: iPhones sold in Japan with a Japanese SIM card will not let you shut off the shutter sound when taking a picture. Even in silent mode.

As a Japanese watching Japan's smartphone trends, I'd say most Japanese people buy iPhone because "most people have it," It's funny but it's the reason. All the other reasons seem secondary to me.

I worked in Japan for 2 and a half years. I rarely saw people using a phone other than iPhone. its crazy.

As a Japanese, this video is amazing and I just want this video to have Japanese subtitles so that the Japanese people would watch this! It explains how and why Japanese people ends up with an iPhone when buying a new phon.

One thing you forgot to mention: Apple's dominance in Japan wasn't complete until 2016. Reason: the Japanese market version of the iPhone 7, which added support for the Sony FeliCa RFID standard. With FeliCa , the iPhone could take advantage of NFC-enabled payment systems used in Japan such as Mobile Suica, which tremendously expanded the iPhone's popularity in Japan.

@mattflammger4396
I find it extremely funny that companies in Japan thought the exact same thing that companies in the US thought when the iPhone came out. “That thing is a fad, there’s no way it will ever succeed, we’re just going to keep making our outdated thing until it goes away.”

Apple and Japanese design languages are very closely aligned. Both tend to focus on efficiency and simplicity when it comes to their design language. Hence why the iPhone was very popular amongst the Japanese.

I've been to Japan once in 2008. I remember people were using slender feature phones which I didn't see in other parts of the world. I always think that's one aspect which made Japanese culture unique. It's quite a surprise for me to learn that Japan has embraced the smart phone trend since then.

@Meekox
I studied in Japan back when apple came to Japan and Im not joking when im saying that 80% of the people still didnt even use a touchscreen phone. It was a huuuge leap of technolocy for people around me back then and till this day they say that apple has always been ahead of its time

Aesthetics are also very important to the Japanese which Apple’s products and their stores have a large focus on.

@jiazhechen
The opposite side of this story is that Japan was once known as the only major country that doesn't like iPhone at all in the early year. Apple once wanted to get into Japan, but at that time all major mobile network carrier providers enforced a rule to put their logo on all the devices they sell in their stores. At that time, Apple stores are not as popular as they are now, and most customers usually buy mobile phones in carrier service stores so that they can get a better deal. So you can imagine that's very important for the carrier providers to let Apple know they are the boss of Japan market. But Apple refused to bow to them, so Apple ended up having very little share in Japan market at that time. Later, a new mobile network carrier came into the market known as Softbank, who was willing to let Apple sell iPhones in their stores without Softbank logos on the device, because they thought Japanese customers will love iPhone and Softbank needed market share at that time. As a result, the deal was done. And since Softbank provided crazy cheap mobile service plans at that time (though with poor phone call quality), the combo ended up having a great effect on the market share. Plus, at that time, brands like Sharp and Sony are still feeling good about their "phone phones", rather than smartphones. At the end of the story, other major carrier service providers had to admit that they have made a huge mistake at a great cost. And to make up for the mistake, they have also let iPhones get into their stores without having their logos on them. But that was already too late. Nowadays people are more willing to buy Apple devices in Apple stores than ever before. And that's perhaps the most important part of the story on how Apple wins in Japan market.

I remember when I went to Japan 2 years ago. I traveled around Tokyo via subway during my first week and I was stumped by how many iPhones I saw everywhere I looked. That was in sept. 2019 and the only Galaxy ad I recall seeing was because it was the official sponsor for the 2020 Tokyo games.

I’ve spent most of my adult life in Japan and I’m a tech enthusiast, and I’d never heard of the Samsung emoji thing. Asked my girlfriend, who is Japanese and also has an iPhone and she’d never heard of it either. I’m quite sure that’s not a significant factor.

Samsung is a company that started by providing technology from Sanyo NEC and copying Sony.
The current chairman is also a graduate of Waseda University in Japan. Lee Jae-yong, the eldest son and candidate for the next chairman, is a graduate of Keio University in Japan.
Is Samsung still an anti-Japanese company?
The reason why Japanese people don't use Korean products like Samsung is simply because they have poor performance and aftercare is neglected, not because they are anti-Korean.

My friend tells me, "You should buy an iphone as soon as possible."In Japan, it is almost common sense that smartphones are iphones, and people who use Android devices tend to be despised.Japanese telecom company also recommend iphones, so many people buy them without knowing the good points of Android devices.

@bijibijian9740
aside from marketing aspects. Japan has a lot of mobile digital products. the cost of developing an app is so expensive in there. so when apple comes in, so many developers see the opportunity to broaden their market without having an additional costs to develop their apps on every different device. because of that, the users were growing.
also, japanese respects privacies. only apple that has been consistently doing these privacy things from the very start.

Japan's awesome in a lot of ways, but the only thing I find annoying is a ton of conservative business practices they hold on to. So many companies don't find it necessary to adapt to changing times and technology and end up running to the ground when an innovative product like the iPhone can easily sweep them by the feet.

“Japanese people are known to try to buy products from their own country rather than those from overseas”
Well, true. But not when products look cool and are from the States.
And Apple dominated Japanese market not only because of Samsung. I believe one of the biggest factors is that many of the early Android smartphones made by Japanese manufacturers had a lot of software problems, probably due to the fact that they were trying to add many features from their “Galapagos” feature phones. Many of my friends and me myself actually first made our smartphone debut on an Japanese Android devices, but most of them switched to iPhones year after year.

A Japanese iPhone user passing by.
Along with the great marketing and strategy apple had in Japan, I think Japanese mentality could be also argued.
I feel most Japanese does not want themselves isolated, meaning they want to fit in, especially young people using Android feel they are left out. So people chose to buy iPhone over time.
