Sorry I know I’m late in commenting, but I’ve always been intrigue by this notion of US, UK, Canada, Australia & New Zealand merger. To focus on US and UK, how it would happen is, England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland (or all of Ireland) would each be their own state. Each of the states can keep their version of socialized health care just like Massachusetts does. They would keep their own parliaments as “state” governments. I think they would just have to let go of their monarchy, which is why this would probably never happen. I’m a big fan of the UK and glad they voted to leave the EU. I thought they were closer to the US than Europe in a lot of ways.

What would a UK-US merge look like?
I often recall entering a US post office with a German national and her remarking that the US post office was an exact mixture of a German post office and a British post office. I completed my first degree in the US and I did notice this aspect of hybrid culture. I once asked a colleague at Oxford University "would it not be great to have a country with the sense of freedom of the United Kingdom and the work ethic of Germany" and he replied to me (he is Brazilian) almost immediately: "but it is called the United States!" I think that this is one of the reasons why we are two countries divided by a common language as they say. Our cultures are rather different and so misunderstandings will often occur. Even in Europe under the European Commission I do not think the culture of Germany and the culture of Great Britain have merged in any real sense. The countries remain very different in culture after some forty years of trying to find some common ground inside of the EU. It is a pity because a Prussian friend of mine once said to me: "between Germany and Britain we could run the whole of Europe". Sadly or fortunately the British we left our natural role to France. I believe we could have done a much better job at it. This may be a bit unfair on France. They say that France has all of the engineering technology and that German firms send spies there because the great R&D ideas come from France although the Germans produce better, but perhaps it is too risky to generalize.

What if the UK became an American state?
It would totally dominate the House of Representatives for a start. Especially if, as would be most likely, it was admitted as four separate states in which case it would add eight more seats to the Senate. Many English people might feel that London should be a fifth state and then the UK would be one sixth of the Senate. American Republicans who who somehow believe the Democrats are in any way centre-left, let alone socialist, won’t know what’s hit them. Those British congresspeople wouldn’t of course fall in with the Republican/Democrat split but would form alliances with like-minded colleagues from New York, Illinois, California and Massachusetts. The US would never look the same again.

What would happen if the UK joined the United States as a new state?
The USA would have to buck their ideas up, elect a proper leader, adopt UK gun laws, raise food standards to a adequate level, learn to make chocolate properly, put all the Us back into the English language, improve their pronunciation and learn about democracy.

First of all, let's address the elephant in the room: the name. Should it be the United States of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Or perhaps the United Kingdom of America and Canada? Maybe we could get really creative and go with something like the Super Awesome Mega Nation (SAMN)? Whatever we choose, it's sure to cause a stir among both populations, with Brits and Americans arguing over who should come first in the name.
Next up, we have the political system. Would we stick with the Westminster system, or adopt the US presidential system? Maybe we could create a hybrid system where the president is also the prime minister, and every decision is made through a Twitter poll. Alternatively, we could just get rid of politics altogether and let Simon Cowell make all the important decisions.
Speaking of Simon Cowell, what about the culture clash? The US is known for its fast-paced, in-your-face entertainment, while the UK is all about subtle humor and stiff upper lips. How would we reconcile these two opposing forces? Perhaps we could have an American Idol-style competition where contestants have to recite Shakespeare monologues while doing the Macarena. Or maybe we could just combine the best of both worlds and have a show where people eat hot dogs while watching Downton Abbey.

Of course, we can't forget about the language barrier. Even though both countries speak English, there are still some differences that could cause confusion. For example, Americans say "sidewalk" while Brits say "pavement." And don't get me started on the pronunciation of "schedule." Maybe we could just invent a new language altogether, like a blend of English, Cockney rhyming slang, and Valley Girl speak. It could be called "Cockney Valley Girl" or "Cockney Valley Speak," or perhaps just "CVS" for short.
Finally, there's the issue of geography. The UK is a small island nation, while the US is a massive continent-spanning country. How would we merge these two vastly different land masses? Perhaps we could build a bridge across the Atlantic Ocean, or dig a massive tunnel that connects New York City to London. Or maybe we could just say "screw it" and build a new country in space. After all, if Elon Musk can launch a car into orbit, why can't we launch a country?
In conclusion, a UK-US merger would be an absolute hoot. Sure, there would be some logistical challenges to overcome, but with a little creativity and a lot of British humor, we could create a new nation that's truly one-of-a-kind. So let's raise a cup of tea (or a Budweiser) to the possibility of a Super Awesome Mega Nation, and let's see what kind of crazy adventures we can get up to. Cheers, mate!

What would be the benefit of a UK-US merger and why?
The UK has the following that would be beneficial to the USA —
A national health service that doesn't want to bankrupt it's people.
Political parties from each side of the spectrum instead of just two right wing parties.
Sensible gun laws meaning we have barely any mass shootings.
The Royal Family
A functioning democracy
Better standard of living
Better working conditions, with actual holiday time and pay.
Better education system by the looks of it.

I find the answers here to be rather amusing, no offence to our UK cousins across the pond. The three responses here seem to be written by folks from the UK and their tone is one of "conditions" that the UK would expect if such a unx were to take place. To use one of your phrases, don't you think you are being a bit cheeky? Let me give you a Yank's point of view on this (keep your tongue firmly in your cheek now...). First off, what makes you think that the United States would even be interested? You have some nice real estate, to be sure, but your historical economic performance has been a bit spotty ever since you let go of your empire. Militarily you are pretty good, but here again your forces have shrunk recently and that trajectory does not seem to be headed back up any time soon. We do like the whole Oxford and Cambridge thing; that is a big selling point! While many yanks enjoy the quirks and pageantry of the monarchy, it is not something that has a place in a Federal republic, so it would have to go the way of Hawaii's Queen Liliuokalani. I'm sorry, but there it is. As for representation in the US government, what would make the most sense would be for each country of the United Kingdom to come aboard as a US State, which would give each two senators and proportional elected representatives in the House, as well as a similarly proportional number of Electoral College votes for the presidency. You guys can decide how you want to cast those. The whole English Law thing is certainly nice, but each of your states is going to have to write an actual constitution which grounds ultimate power and liberty in the people and then grants it to the state on their behalf, rather than your current construct of ultimate power starting with the Monarch and then devolving it to the people.

We had a tiff about this in the late 1700's and we don't want to go through all that again! I think that would be about it. Maybe you could make the case to break England up into several states roughly paralleled the Regions of England, but we'd have to collapse a few, lest we end up with more states like Rhode Island and Delaware, which we are not going to let happen again. I think London would also have to be rolled into the state of Southeast England (that would be the new name) as well. I've no idea what you will all do about flags for all those states, but you have lots of lovely crests and coats of arms and tartans and such, so I'm sure you'll come up with something. Of course, beyond all of that, there are the few remaining colonies (I know they are called "Overseas Territories" now, but why use a two word euphemism when one old word will do nicely), some of which I don't think we'd really want. We'd be happy to take Bermuda (it's kind of already American), the Caribbean colonies, your Mediterranean colonies (particularly Gibraltar; this give us a chance to needle Spain again 100 years after we kicked them out of Cuba and the Philippines), the BIOT (which we kind of already run), Ascension Island (again, which we kind of already run) and maybe Tristan de Cunha . I don't know what to do about St Helena... I'm also not sure what we'd do with the Falklands and such down in the Southern Atlantic, but it might be fun to park an aircraft carrier battle group in Stanley harbor and invite the Argies over to talk about this whole Malvinas thing... That embarrassing sex scandal thing on Pitcarin Island has probably put an end to the long-term prospects for the inhabitants of those islands, so that one will probably just go by the wayside on its own. As for the rest of the commonwealth, well, I suppose someone else could adopt the Monarchy (maybe Australia?) but they have all kind of gone their separate ways anyway.

What would a UK-US merge look like?
Well, the question pre-suppose this has happened so it's futile to engage in a debate as to how unlikely such a unx would be... though it is very unlikely indeed!
One must assume that some sort of deal would have been struck. After all, the unx would expand America's GDP considerably. The UK would probably insist on being over- represented in congress with Representatives being calculated by population base and senators... well the UK has three times the population of Florida the most populous state in the US. My feeling is that they would get more than two senators... maybe the UK would be called a 'Super State' or something.
The UK would have to sign up to the constitution which would suck because we REALLY don't want your gun crime over here. Certain guarantees would have to be made and my guess is the 'super state' would retain an awful lot of autonomy which, frankly would piss Americans off. We'd refuse to give away our free health care, we'd refuse to get rid of the queen, we'd refuse to be led by Donald Trump...
You know. It just wouldn't work.
