How do you feel being Mexican?

I feel good about it, then again it was a conscious decision on my part. When I’d lived here for five years I applied for citizenship, and it took a little over two years for the paperwork to be processed for me to receive my ‘Carta de Naturalización’ which means I have the same rights as any other Mexican except I can’t run for President or State Governor, and if I spend more than five years consecutively outside the country I’ll lose my citizenship. Now I’ve been legally Mexican for almost a decade.
Mexico is a great country, there is so much diversity, both geographically and culturally: high mountains, cloud forests, wide open deserts, beautiful beaches, dense tropical jungle, big cities, tiny villages, wide rivers, great gushing waterfalls, art galleries, ancient pre-Hispanic cities, museums, stage plays, foods including roast cactus, spicy chocolate sauces, fried bananas, and almost anything as long as you add enough lemon and chile for it to taste good, etc., etc.

All the same, I understand why so many Mexicans want to leave. I am lucky enough to still have a foreign passport that allows me to travel to far more countries without a visa than my wife who was born here. As a native English speaker I can also find reasonably paid work more easily than most - for the vast bulk of Mexican society there are few opportunities to build a better life than that of a sweatshop worker, an agricultural labourer, or a shelf-stacker in a supermarket, or similar low-paid, hard-work jobs. I once read an article that said that people will only cease to leave everything behind in search of ‘The American Dream’ when we are able to offer them an attainable ‘Mexican Dream’ worth pursuing. Most Mexicans who leave do so entirely due to the lack of opportunities where they were born, and would much rather stay here if they could see any way to lead a comfortable life here. This is entirely due to the economic system and conditions that people are slaves to.
So I feel proud to be Mexican, proud of my adopted nation and its people - especially its people - and proud that my daughters’ Celtic-Roman-Saxon-Viking-Norman blood is mixed with Aztec-Totonac-Spanish blood.

If this was asked to me 5 or 10 years ago, I wouldn’t hesitate to answer that being Mexican is the best thing in the World.
Is not that my feeling about being Mexican has changed that much, but when you begin to grow you start to see things you didn’t see before, and all of a suudden you are faced with reality, the reality of your country and the reality of being a citizen of this country.
Thanks to the fact that you now have access to the internet and can visit webpages, blogs, chats, magazines and newspapers from any place in the World in a matter of seconds, as well as being able to travel to any place you want fairly easier and cheaper than before, you no longer question your own “Mexicanness” by yourself or among your fellow countrymen , but also get to perceive how others feel and see your “Mexicanness”.
So, how do I feel being Mexican?
I will be honest and say that I feel proud (of the good stuff) and ashamed of the bad parts.

this is how I feel.
I would lie if I said EVERYTHING about being Mexican is cool and awesome, sadly it is not. Time has shown me that there were more bad things that I didn’t see before and were always there, but I was either too young or to blind to see and understand.
The so-called narco culture , not being on time for appointments, the ‘I don’t give a damn about others’ kind of attitude, obesity, corruption and many other similar stuff are things that I do not like about my country and makes me feel ashamed and sad about being Mexican.
Having been said that, I still think that we have more good and positive things than bad. My heart beats and I get emotional everything I listen to a Mariachi, I’m more in love with tacos now than ever before, even if I have tasted Tequila many times before, it has been a year since I got a bit tipsy with a delicious Tequila and now I appreciate this beverage more than ever, I love the way family is still highly regarded as the building block of the Mexican society and many other parts of the culture and traditions still manage to make me feel happy and blessed to be Mexican.

I love my country. I love it's diversity in climates, food, nice people, history, culture and so forth.
However, there’s a sentiment of fury, impotence and rage while seeing the brutalities, murders and corruption committed everyday. Politicians colluded with narcotrafficants, the police colluded with lower rate criminals… it’s like hell!! Jobs are so scarce and are given to foreigners instead of a well educated Mexican. Salaries are a freakin’ joke… I could go on and on citing examples. To sum it all: IGNORANCE, CORRUPTION and LACK OF EDUCATION are the highlights in this country. I really hope the younger generations of politicians really look into the people interests.

Quite well, thank you very much. A little sorry for what is happening in my beloved country, if that is why you ask. but besides that I have to start by telling you that I am a 90 years old man. Today, I woke up had my daily shower, had ham and eggs, coffee instead the usual green tamales for breakfast because I had an appointment with my son to play golf, we played just 9 holes because I felt a little tired, in the meantime my two grandsons and my daughter in law were playing in the pool. About 4 o′clock we went to the dinning room and had lunch, nothing to write about but that′s life. So as you see I can′t complain, I am writing this in order to make time because at 9, I will go downstairs and pour myself my usual Scotch in the rocks. And by the way, how do you feel yourself being, Polish, Nigerian, Canadian, Indian, German,? I don′t know who you are. So tell me how you feel.

It’s a bitter sweet experience.
I love/enjoy being a mexican citizen because of the freedom attached to it. We can go almost anywhere in the world and do almost anything in the country, but I think is related to other factors: I did get a good education, traveled a lot when I was a child, and being part of the Mexico City’s middle class helped a lot.
On the other hand, Mexico is super rich on zones like Mexico City, but super poor on other parts, like Chiapas. It’s just sad how so many people doesn’t have good opportunities, and seems almost impossible to fix the system.
I refused to get the american citizenship in 2004 and I’m still happy with my choice. Nowdays, I have been thinking about getting the paraguayan citizenship in order to be able to get a mercosur citizen ID and be able to live in Medellin, Colombia. There is so many reasons for it: Taxes laws, Medellin tech hot scene, and the PRI federal government in Mexico, and the Trump federal government in the states.

As a Mexican living in México that has always been living there, i am proud to say we have some of the most interesting cultures and histories in the world (of course, when you love your culture, you will feel like that no matter where you are from). The variety of mexican traditions and cultures is outstanding, but the same way this fact contributes to their cultural richness, it provokes a lot of problems, lots of differences, it is hard to unify a large country like mexico into a single national identity, i think, we are still growing as a big nation, we have a lot of scars from the past, a lot of corruption and the constant feel of being inferior compared to our neighbor in the north… It is hard being so close to them, they impose the standard beauty concept (tall and white) and also the intellectual one (if you don’t speak english, you are an ignorant without opportunities), imagine how hard it is for most mexicans to be qualified as ugly and ignorant as soon as they are born, and shamely, that mentality has been growing within mexicans as well, it creates discord among mexicans. New generations prefer to go eat at mcdonalds instead of eating a delicious meal with tamales or chilaquiles, for example, and that is terribly sad… I hope we also get to realize about this, and begin to appreciate our culture a huge lot more.

It is a beautiful curse.
This is how I always describe it: I love being from Mexico, but I hate being Mexican. Meaning that I am bloody proud of my cultural heritage both Aztec and European, my history, my traditions, my language, my music, my food, etc. However, I despise the Mexican idiosyncrasy that pervades at most levels: inferiority, fear, mediocrity, self-pity, etc.
I am extremely proud of my country of birth, both of its cultural and natural richness. Even though I am U.S. citizen too, I always present myself as Mexican when I travel in Europe. I have always tried to elevate Mexico's name around the world. When I was studying at the University of Oxford, I would always tell everyone that I was from Mexico!
I know that many won't agree with me, but in my heart I truly believe that the best gift I could ever give to my country of birth was to leave and cultivate myself from the exterior in order to become a better person for her. I hope that one day I will be able to return and pay her back some of the bounties she has gifted me, such as my sweetest childhood memories and my cultural identity, the same way a son returns to her poor old mother to take care of her in her last days.

I feel really proud, because we have an amazing culture and history. We have beautiful customs and festivities such as “Dia de Muertos” ( day of the death). We have delicious food such as tacos, mole, enchiladas, pozole, etc. People is very friendly and we always receive foreigners with a smile. The landscapes are unbelievable and they México even more unique. Family is problably the most important word here, family always comes first.I think all mexicans should be proud, because we might not be the perfect country but we sure have perfect people.

I feel very proud. I know we have bad reputation in different countries. Sometimes we’re catalogued as drug dealers, lazy people, slow and dumb, drunk, corrupt, illegal immigrants or just people doing something wrong or trying to take advantage of situations. As a Mexican, I have the opportunity to show that a lot of Mexicans are incredible smart, clever and very hard working. We have scientists doing important research in a lot of fields, athletes doing a great job around the world, we have an amazing heritage and history with Aztecs, Mayan people, Spanish colonization, beautiful places with fauna and flora, people is very kind and passionate. Our skin color is beautiful as well. I feel really happy of being Mexican.

Actually, I’m mixed! My mother is Mexican and my father is White. But, I suppose I’m “white passing”.
People always give me looks when I tell them I'm Mexicana. They always say I’m too pale and that my Spanish is bad. So it sucks that nobody thinks I am what I really am, but I know what I am, and I'm very proud of that.
